Black Mesa is finally ready for release? Awesome, I'll definitely be downloading this when it's released. Now if only HL3 would have a surprise release.

This is also worth pointing out, the soundtrack. Pretty darn good work, in my opinion.

It's available for free to download and listen to on YouTube, but I threw a few dollars to the guy, definitely worth it.

Anyone whose been around somewhere near the Source modding scene for the past 5 years will carry the same notion that I do.

That they'll release another trailer promising a download date, but fail to achieve it, breaking my heart in the process? D:

We have all been waiting a very long time for this.

If this is indeed the final release date - then it shall be a glorious day.

I enjoy food quite a lot.

Does anybody even read anymore? I say this as I find posts are almost entirely ignored and then a completely pointless post posted stating one thing when it was already addressed in the previous post hours earlier even...

Quote: "

A forum message posted soon after revealed that eager players would not get an improved version of the entire game on 14 September.

Carlos Montero, leader of the 40-strong Black Mesa development team, said it decided to release a shorter version instead of making people wait longer for the whole thing.

Alien intrusion

The large chunk of Half-Life that is finished lets players guide hero Gordon Freeman to a section of the original gameplay known as Lambda Core. Finishing this first chunk should take players between eight to 10 hours.

The final section yet to be finished takes place in the alien Xen dimension. An expanded Xen section would be released at an unnamed date in the future, said the team.

"

40 man team, this better be good or else I will just point and LOL for a few seconds... then continue to drink my tea... personally I think HL2 was a let down, and I recall HL1 being interesting and somehow not as empty as HL2 felt... must admit EP1 and EP2 for HL2 were major improvements both visually and felt less lonely... but again I never found the interest to go further than 2 hours as whenever I play the game I always end up doing a format... but I suppose Valve Cloud saves should have fixed that issue by now...

I suppose I will play the whole thing when HL3 is out and have free time if any...

So if you find HL boring, why bother to post here just to "LOL" at people who have put years of hard work into a game, trying to make it the same level of quality as a professional release, and yet are making a partial release for the sake of their fans?

Have you released a game yet?

I played through Half Life 2 at least 10-15 times by now, and will do it again. It's still my favorite, and although the episodes were great as well, they couldn't compete in my opinion.
City 17, Ravenholm, Nova Prospekt, The Citadel... just incredible level design everywhere, an interesting story and great characters, not to mention the brilliant gameplay.
However, I never finished the first half life. I started several times but never made it to the end since I always got stuck somewhere. But I'm sure BMS will be great, so I'm pretty much looking forward to playing through the first few hours again. And maybe even the end, in case they'll ever release it.

... Interesting, considering all of them are doing this for free, and 40 people is still far below average size for a game dev company, and yet they are striving for triple-A quality.

I am not entirely sure that it is indeed just made by fans or for free... Can someone link a page regarding the dev team?

It is free because it would be illegal otherwise.

And it is made by fans who felt that Half Life: Source was a rubbish example of a porting to Source, and endeavoured to make something better.

It's a group of 40 fans striving to achieve the quality of the very games company they revere, and improve upon one of their most coveted works. They're releasing it as a free gift and labour of love to the fandom.

I personally don't feel I really have a right to judge it, but moreso, I trust that a team of hardcore fans will make all the right decisions, and it should be a damned awesome game.

I do not have any right to judge it either but my opinion is my own by my own right...

But no cease and desist order?

This is why I am confused... is Valve just playing it cool?

The development team is doing all the work, and is releasing the final product for free which will cause new interest in the Half-Life series and Valve games in general. It's a win-win for Valve, why would they want to shut it down?

Valentine, the world isn't a dystopia where everyone sues for copyright. Some companies actually care about their customers, or at least maintain the illusion of doing so for the sake of profit.

Indeed, Valentine seems to overlook that we're talking about Valve here, one of the most mod-friendly game companies out there.

indeed, ok so I guess we can look at added features now... aside from achievements what else will there be? will there be multiplayer aspects?

I think playing multiplayer in some of the Black Mesa labs would be fun >.<

Valve are historically quite supportive of mods (after all, they release modding and development tools for all their games). This particular project actually has their personal blessing as well, I believe (they just asked them to take 'Source' out of the title, it was originally called Black Mesa: Source).

Fan games and media are shut down all the time. It would not be surprising if Valve did so, however mod friendly they might be (unrelated to being IP infringing friendly).

Bingooooo. I was excited for this back in 2009, then after the understandably missed their release date, their were total jerks to everyone asking what the deal was.

There's no way Valve would block it now, that would be political suicide. They will either let it go or offer the developers a publishing deal.

Shh... you're pretty.

I don't see how:

A, this would be a bad thing for Valve,

B, Valve are suddenly Apple,

They're not going to sue them, they would've done so already. Hell, Garry's Mod started as a physics playground using nothing but Valve's HL2 media, and is now a massive, official Steam game. This might follow suit on completion, if it hits the mark for quality.

If you haven't voted for us already (I say "us" because I've been on the team since June 2006), please vote for Black Mesa on Greenlight:-

If this nice little website is accurate in any way, Black Mesa just moved into 1st place:

Just going to resurrect this thread to say...

This game delivers. Not only does it recreate Half Life, but it also improves on it more than graphically.

It also weaves itself into Half Life 2 a bit better, though I'd recommend it to anyone. Tonnes of fun for anyone new to the series, too.

Yah I played through a bit today and it's freakier than the original. The way they add atmosphere with haze and lighting is just phenomenal!

I have to admit, they made headcrab zombies scary again.

Especially given the first segment where all you have are emergency flares and a guard with a pistol to fight off a dozen or so of 'em.

I feel they managed to make it fairly slow-paced with the expansion of the player's armoury.

All seem to have torrents for it, but I have no idea which is the correct (or latest) one. A bit of research might be necessary.

You must launch it via Steam. You will require Source SDK Base 2007 (You can download this by going to your library, and then changing "All Games" to "Tools" and locate it in there, then once downloaded swap back to "All Games").

I've played this game for the whole weekend and it's AWESOME! I like how the facility now makes sense, as in the original, a lot of the stuff made no sense at all (see Freeman's Mind, which really shows what I mean).

I think they should have used the HL2 zombie sounds, as the one's here aren't as good. And it takes getting used to having to press crouch on even the smallest jumps.

If you use http://www.desura.com software, you can use it to download the mod and install it. It's like Steam for mods, and I believe it will get updated there as well automatically.

What an awesome job they did - the feel of Half Life has been preserved and even improved in some areas. It's a top quality, playable and worthwhile game, never mind being a mod, never mind being a remake, and never mind being free - it's a great game in it's own right.

I have to admit, the attention to detail was beautiful.

The headcrabs banging their heads against windows was just disturbing, and the lighting in that section really recaptured that sense of everything descending into hell.

i am supposed to be cleaning my apartment today instead i spent the last several hour trying out Black Mesa. (for some reason while i played i was tempted to quote the "freemans mind" series lol)

anyway, i think they did a pretty amazing job. Last time i played the original Half life was about 3 years ago, and from what i remember you almost immediatley get your crowbar a gun as soon as you get out of the chamber after the manure hits the ventelator.

What i really loved how they changed it. You dont immediatley get a crowbar or a gun, first part of the level, you really feel like a helpless nerd constantly hiding behind the security guard. and when you finally do get a crowbar later in the level, its your savior and salvation for the rest of the level (ok you get a gun but with too little ammo to last long)

Good job at overglorifying the crowbar!

the detail is amazing, i was Psyched when i found a younger version of Dr Eli and Dr Kleiner (sp?)

another detail i found funny is if you run up to one of the computer terminals in the beginning and activate it, it will return a BSOD speaking of which...
Black mesa runs on Windows 98????

I loved how a security guard and a scientist made a bet if freeman shows up tio work that day or not, and the group of scientists who politley bickered with each other throwing mild insults mixed with scientific jargon.

The soundtrack is AWESOME! if my guess is correct, its original fanmade soundtrack, but they managed to make just the right type of music to that dosent stick out against HL2 soundtracks and fits in very well in black mesa sourse. (the music that played after i put on the hazard suit made me feel so badass)

the awesome special effects like explosion is what really took me by surprise especially when i remember where in the oeiginal game something might be scripted to explode in your face so i was mentally prepaired for that exept i failed. When stuff started blowing up in the game, i actually got scared because of how realistic they were compared to original HL.

Finally the amount of beautiful graphics in B.M.s. nearly burned my videocard!

my radeon 5870 had its fan speed only at 20% (for some reason almost all radeons have that weird issue) i havent figured out how to get the fan at full speed via drivers, so for a while i used ATI tray tools to run the fan at 100% but as time went by i forgit about that, and i just kept it at 20% and it never gave me any problem with any game untill today my graphics card died from overheating. It started working again tho after it cooled off a bit so no trouble. the first game i ever played that actually threated to fry my GPU (in a desktop, games did fry several laptop GPUs in my lifetime)

To conclude my rant i wanted to say with genuine honesty that i seriosly dont think Valve themselves could have made a better HL1 remake (well they kinda did with HL1 sourse but it was the same unaltered game running on the sourse engine with shaded water effects and physics)
the only dissapintment is that Black Mesa Sourse is only up to lambda core which is about 2/3s of the original game. I seriosly hope they finish it. Also, they should remake Blue shift and Opposing force. I was always curious about what happened to Shepard, ... well a reamike wont explain anything new but it would still be very nice to play as Shepard once again.

dont hate people who rip you off, cheat and get away with it, learn from them
