OK guys , I searched the web looking for an answer but I failed . I'm making a game right now and I'm using sound effects from House Of Dead 2 . My question is : is it legal ? The game will be non commercial , non copyrighted , I will mention these sound are from HOD2 , and will be packed by infector menu creator to protect files . Is it still considered a violation of copyright ? (hope not , I can't find any worthy sound effects -.-)

If you are making the game soley for your own use it's fine, If you start dishing it out to friends and family or make it avaiable on the web, (Files protected or not) then it becomes an infringement. As far as I know.

No.

Do yourself a favor and get audacity, a mic, and some skills to make your own sounds.

Trust me, its a lot better than taking your chances with it, and its also better just to avoid the hassle altogether.

Here is a site that has tons of royalty free sounds by people all over the world:

That's embarrassing Thanks

I don't think there's anyone that would make a game to play it himself

I will , and about the site , I already used it to get some sounds , but the sounds I need are zombie ones . It's really hard to find good ones that are non-copyrighted but I'll give it some search .

Thanks all , Cheers

Just as a pointer you shouldnt limit your sound choices from what you can find on the internet. A couple groaning and moaning noises mixed with some animal growls and added effects would do perfectly for some zombie sounds (hence why I suggested audacity).

Basically what Im saying is that if you cant find it,try to perservere and create some of your own. You never know, what you may create may be comepletely original and set your game apart from the others!

Youd be suprised what sounds you can make from what you find. For example, the sounds of the necromorphs in dead space were, like I said, mixes of human screaming and animal noises with added effects to make it seem non-human and more like an alien creature.

@Illusionist: I'd make a game to play myself, Gives you a sense of accomplishment Plus it's nice to know your the only one who will play it.

Or depressing, depending on the amount of effort you go through to make it.

if you want to use something that others own/have build/created, ask for permission if license is not defined free. very easy rule simply out of educated good behavior that everyone should have learned since kindergarden.

1) "may i play with your toycars?" "sure, lets play together."

2) "i play with your toycars now!" "no, you dont" bamm! "uääähhh."

when you are grown up playing together means licensing, while "bamm!" means dial the lawyers number.

thinking of that we are all creators want to be respected, and of the great Immanuel Kant:
"Was du nicht willst, das man dir tu, das füge keinem anderen zu."
"Do not do to others what you do not want others to do to you."

that is still derived from copyrighted work.

The only way to circumvent this is, like I said a little more than a month and a half ago, make your own sounds.

The only time you rip is when you ask permission to rip. That is using somebody elses sounds in a commercial game but respecting the fact that it is theirs and solely determine what you can and cannot do with them.

My general rule of thumb is:

If I have to ask, the answer is no.

It seems to hold true 99.7% of the time.
