This sounds interesting...

Although there's not much information on it, at least it sounds like SOMETHING that us game developers could look forward too, although with the advent of tools like Unity3D and UDK (and now with Torque3D going free AND open-source) becoming more and more popular, does it make much difference?

When it's released I'll take a look at it though. What do you guys think?

I think you've misunderstood what they mean by "studio". They mean a game development studio like 343 Industries(an actual company), not XNA Game Studio(which is a set of libraries geared towards game development).

Torque 3D is going free? That's cool.

I bought Torque Game Engine 1.4 6 years ago and with a book to learn it. The book is gathering dust on my shelf and TGE is still unused. It's a great engine, maybe I should go dust off that book, even if my version is out dated now. Might be interesting to try out Torque3D when it's free. It's a really professional engine and what I love about it is that when you buy it you get the full source code, the whole shabang. Probably worth the $150 I paid for it if I used it.

I'm trying the demo of Torque right now but I don't like it as much as I like Unity.

It's probably more complicated than Unity. I could never actually get used to it. I might find it easier now that I'm a much better coder than I was 6 years ago. But it does mean learning another language, so I might not revive Torque just yet, particularly as I have a project to work on.

It's a good engine and of course the latest versions are pretty powerful. And of course, one of very few game engines out there that actually has Linux support. I don't know if Torque 3D has it, but TGE 1.4 definitely does.

It's headed by someone from Microsoft-era Rare. Don't hold your breath there, kids.
