For several weeks now we've been having problems downloading emails on our three computers. Typical symptoms are that the download process terminates prematurely and has to be repeated several times till all messages have been downloaded. Here's a typical error window that we get (this is from my XP laptop - the other machines are Vista and W7 and give similar messages and symptoms):

Anyone know where the problem might be?

It could be that one of the accounts has a corrupt email. This used to happen to me at work quite a lot - back in the long long ago before we upgraded to an exchange server and Outlook proper.

Anyway, I think it's worth trying to access your accounts online, delete any messages that might be corrupt, and see if that has a laxative effect. I think that Outlook can cope better with corrupt emails, have only had this and similar issues with Outlook Express.

Not sure how I could tell.

As far as I can tell, all messages have been downloaded so if corrupt messages are the problem doesn't that mean that we keep getting new "corrupt" messages?

I do wonder though whether message content is implicated somehow. Messages containing lots of fancy stuff such as Facebook notifications or big attachments usually seem to be present when things go wrong. Simple text emails seem to be received OK - but they are smaller of course.

I'm not convinced OE is the problem since that is only used on my XP machine. The other two use Windows Mail or Windows Live Mail and experience similar problems.

Could there be an account setting that's got messed up somehow?

If you were on IMAP, I'd say delete it from outlook and recreate the account. I had to do that in thunderbird once before.

But as you mentioned, this is on 3 computers so if it was a corrupt email, it'd only be on 1 machine (pop3). Have you contacted BTInternet? Is there webmail client you can try to see if the problem exists there as well?

might be worth sharing your OE account properties (advanced) as i'm assuming you're using the same on all systems. ie:

the minimum server timeout is 30 seconds, there. i'm set at one minute. you?

Your modem/network was disconnected. If this happens often with dial-up there may be noise on your phone line or you may need updated modem drivers. With a network (broadband etc) the problem may be with your network hardware or drivers. Also check that any antivirus software you have installed is working correctly.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been away and only just remembered this thread because of another Internet problem. Related perhaps?

Anyway, here are my settings:

I've been wondering whether our Hub has developed a fault or is inadequate in some way?

[update]
Several of my PC related problems seem to have been resolved including the one on this thread. For example, my desktop has now been running for several days without being rebooted and with no obvious problems. It had been crashing at least once a day and sometimes several and would rarely wake up correctly. I had also been experiencing weird problems with Google and email.

All these seem to have been resolved I'm pleased to report.

So a big THANK YOU to everyone who made valuable suggestions.

Three things seem to have contributed to this happy state of affairs:

1. A careful clean install of the latest nVidia GFX card drivers (several of you made useful suggestions there).

2. Moving all my old mail on the server out of the server's Inbox (it was VanB's suggestion about a possible corrupt email that led me to try that again). I still don't know for certain whether there is a corrupt email but moving all of them out of the way has stopped the problem.

3. Resetting the browser settings on Internet Explorer so now Google Street view works smoothly again. (Thanks to MrValentine.)

Thanks again everyone.
