Simply put, is it worth it, or are there better, cheaper/free realtime protection options available?

Or would you guys recommend not running anything realtime and just scan my pc from time to time. It's not like I'm going to crazy sites or something like that.

MSE

Never had any issues, works a charm, free, and I used to pay for it and would happily have continued to pay regardless... [Previously called OneCare]

What are the details of the KB article... you could judge whether it is important or not and simply hide it to allow UPDATE to continue... sometimes I come across conflicting updates that simply stick and I have to hide them...

Usually this is because you already have it installed because of other software...

You can always un-hide it in future and see if the issue repeats or not...

Hope that helps...

[p.s. - Right click an update to select hide ]

Just hide it... and ignore it for now... there might be other complications involved...

But I would suggest you began a backup process in case anything gets worse...

After you hide it... just check for updates again...

What would you recommend for making a backup? I currently have EaseUS Backup something installed. Good enough?

Never heard of that...

Sorry I cannot help for that subject area... I have my own specialist tools for it though...

I do have a plan recently to make my setup public through my blog soon though...

Depends on your setup really. Do you want to backup to another machine on your network or to an external hard drives or to dvds or to the cloud?

Then just use the Windows Backup feature:

http://windows.microsoft.com/is-IS/windows7/Back-up-your-files

I'd highly recommend backing up to an external drive and then removing the drive when you're not backing up on it. Your next best bet is backing up to a seperate PC. If something takes out your PC or all the PCs in your house (a nasty surge or virus), then you'd have no good backup.
