Has anyone any ideas what might cause the following problem. I'm using IE8.

For the last few days Google Street View won't work on my Desktop PC unless I choose InPrivate Browsing - all I get is a black image otherwise. I've tried clearing the cache as suggested by Google Maps Help but that has no effect.

The strange thing is that yesterday Google Street view wouldn't work on any of our machines - but today only my Desktop machine is affected.

Why would INPrivate Browsing make a difference? Could there be a problem with clearing the browsing cache? How can I check? Is there a simple setting that's gone wrong somehow? These problems happened after a Windows Update - probably coincidence though.

Well, this problem is usually caused by not knowing that there are better browsers out there, such as Netscape 1.0.

On a more serious note, it could be something to do with the security settings. The default IE settings are pretty strict, and I guess it's possible that they updated it recently and added something new that you need to adjust.

It now seems likely that the only machine affected is my desktop PC - the other machines only seemed to be affected because we were looking at areas where Street View wasn't available () and we probably didn't check areas where we know it should be available.

Since each machine has had a Windows update in the last few days that cause doesn't seem likely. The desktop has been misbehaving recently. Could a graphics or memory issue cause Street View to fail when viewed in standard mode?

I would check in Chrome. Then you'll know if it's browser settings, or something to do with Google/Lack of data.

Just tried that - Street View opens perfectly in Chrome. What does that tell me about the browser settings etc?

Are the other working machines also using the same version of ie8? Does it give any page warnings or errors, usually in the bottom left corner, or a bar across the top. Are you using the new webgl street view mode, possibly without realizing it? ie doesn't play well with others and gets pouty when something shiny and new comes along

try bing.com/maps not as many areas are covered, but at least try their street side view out... frankly MS have been doing this much longer than goog but no idea why they never did it sooner...

I seldom use goog services any longer...

Good question. Just checked the various machines lurking here:

So the answer to your question is "No."

Because I couldn't get it to work with this forum so I reverted to IE8.

And how do I know Google Street View will work with IE9 on the machine in question? It was working fine with IE8 till a few days ago.

Try this...

IE8>Tools>Advanced>Reset> [Keep the delete personal settings unchecked] > Click Reset > Click Close once the checks are done... > Click OK > Close IE8 and open it again...

This also helps resolve other issues in IE9 too... I know so as I just diagnosed some bugs in IE9 with Silverlight

IE9 works a charm for me... just reinstalled my system and installing a lot of stuff [but this time I am actually restarting when it tells me to ... [45 seconds is not long for me to wait lol ISSD Drives ^^]

Hope that helps...

Could also be a vista issue as that is the only one on that os, the recent windows update you did on all may still have been different for vista than for xp, 7, and it was working before the update right? Can you roll back to before the windows update and see if that restores it?

You had issues with IE9 and this forum? My desktop has been using IE9 for some time and I didn't have any (noticeable) issues with TGC... what in particular didn't work?

The cursor would randomly jump out of the message box when I was typing a post. I'm not sure now but it tended to happen when I pressed the enter or space key. It was very annoying.

It started when I upgraded to IE9 and stopped when I reverted to IE8. I decided it was simpler to stick with something that worked than to struggle to identify the cause.

One day when I've got nothing better to do I might try it again - on my soon to arrive new laptop perhaps.

I'm now playing with my new W7 laptop and IE9 works fine with this forum so perhaps something got fouled up on my Vista desktop.

One day when I have nothing better to do I'll try IE9 again.

I'm posting this with IE9.

I just tried it with IE9, it works for me just fine. I'm staring at my house right now and the navigation works fine.

Works fine for me too on my W7 laptop. Since IE8 is now working fine on my desktop I'm not going to bother upgrading that to IE9 again - till I have to.

Why don't you use firefox or chrome if IE is the problem?

Lots of companies still make employees use IE. Even as a web developer they only allowed me to focus on IE compatibility and not FF. (stupid on their part)

I know, I have started webdesign at school, and while we have to ensure compatibility with all browsers, IE is allways the problem. We still have to make our sites compatible with IE7...

How many times do I have to say this:

Quote: "Works fine for me too on my W7 laptop. Since IE8 is now working fine on my desktop I'm not going to bother upgrading that to IE9 again - till I have to."

In other words I no longer have a problem with IE.

So are you saying you're still having an issue with IE? (Woops, didn't mean to bump a 2 day old post!)
