Find or make a base metal texture and overlay it on top of your texture using a filter. Filters do wonders for changing the whole look of a plain texture

@San XL

Check this Tut out by Bond1. The tecnique he uses really works well. I simplify it a little to suit my needs, but it really can make a difference.

A tip I can give is to remove the shading, e.g all the white or dark parts, so that it is essentially just a flat texture, with no shading at all.
Shading is something that should be handled solely by the lighting of the scene, and shader maps applied (particularly normal map)

Other than that, the overlay suggested by Disturbing 13 is a great idea to add some more depth.

for metal dont overdo the diffuse map, work mostlly on the specular which will give it that metal feeling

Cheers,

sorry guys for the major bump. i have tried the shaders and i came to the conclusion that its not my style. so i decided to create a scifi project where i can easily create my own style of textures.

here is the example

[and textures are in the download for free use

If that works for you then great; it's what allot of people do. I myself seem to make better creations (IMO)without shader effects. The texture looks great by the way.
