Yay! Another compo! Can't wait to see what this one pulls in!

For this compo, we are just making anything from the LOTR series and The Hobbit?

Is it individual items or can it be complete scenes such as the Shire?

I can't wait to get home now, ideas are brewing......must keep 3D Master badge!

Yeah, she really went all out with this one. I love the way she did the big tree. It took her 3 days to do all of the models for this. Nice job Hon!

Good luck everyone!

Willow, your hobbit hole is looking great! I like the choice of foliage surrounding it. You have done a really great job!

Like Rolfy said; you have definitely set the bar with this first entry; and so quickly as well. Have you got an inside edge on whats comp is coming next!?

Josh, how much is she paying you for this information? I will double it!

sorry for a double post, but, i think i needed to start a new post to showcase my WIP.

I have finished the model as far i want to for now, and i will be working on a texture. It just has a material assigned for now.

It is Saurons Mace

As always, i have attached a larger resolution image for anyone (like me) that likes to take a closer look.

I'm going to attempt to enter this one... as for what I am making well... that will be a surprise. A possibly horrible attempt of a model surprise. As I am making something that I am not will good at doing.

Really liking the Mace Unfamilia, though the lettering seems to 'newish', would do no harm to dirty it up a little and bevel it so it appears more a part of the model.

@Sitds

Thanks for comment. I look forward to your entry! Lets see if you can get that badge that Rolfy stole from you!

@Gamer X

Best of luck with your model. That's what i love about these compo's, they stretch my learning curve because i make things i wouldn't normally make. They are really good to enhance your skills.

@Rolfy

Thanks. I agree with you about the lettering. I tried to make it seem as though it was glowing through. I have 'weathered' the lettering underneath that emission map. I will turn the emission down and see what it looks like afterwards. (if it looks better, i won't be doing the video again....it took nearly 23 hours to render!)

Smaug was often to be found sitting on his perch overlooking the lands Of Gondor.

Bloody hell Rolfy! As soon as i saw an email on my phone telling me that you had posted, i said, "oh, hes entering......great, there goes my chances"

How do you create these scenes? Do you model the landscape as well as Smaug? Or is the landscape just an image?

Its absolutely gorgeous! I love it!

Its a fairly simple scene really.

Four terrain models and the low lying clouds and mists are meta blobs textured with a cloud material. Smaug is part of the scene.

Terrain rock and vegetation materials are layered and distributed according to slope and elevation.

I wasn't getting what I was after and to make the scene pop had to render out two different atmospheric passes.

Volumetric lighting with Global illumination.

Spectral lighting with Global Radiosity.

Overlayed these and took the opacity down on the top layer, erased some parts and adjusted the levels a tad.

To get this:

Here's the same scene with different materials and atmospherics to show how different the mood and appearance can be.

Skyrim!!

But seriously, beautiful renders! The only thing that is bothering me is these two places that glow in your first render. There's this oval glow around the city, then just to the left of it there is a rectangular glow on the mountain side. They seem to pop out and they feel like they should be toned down with the rest of the scene. I can see what you were doing with the light, but I think if you made it a bit more subtle it would look a lot better.

The snow scene is just perfect. Can I have a higher rez version for my desktop?

Rolfy,

I know you are probably busy, but, would you ever consider making a tutorial for rendering these scenes?

I could model the landscape and could probably model Smaug, but, the low lying mist and clouds and also, the textures i would struggle with.

Quote: "Terrain rock and vegetation materials are layered and distributed according to slope and elevation"

What software do you use? I have done this with Cryengine before, but, i have no idea where the settings are in Blender!

Very impressed Rolfy!

@Josh, here's the 1920x1080 render, changed things up a little so it sat better with the aspect ratio.
Its attached to the download button below and I left it in bitmap format (you might want to convert it to whatever suits you).

This one is a 1024x576 .jpg version, for posting here.

I'll leave this as my final entry for now, (I might still find some time to do something else, really like the idea of doing Shelob)

@Unfamilia, Everything was done in 3dsMax, never used Blender so I cant help you out with that. I used Dreamscape plug-in for atmospherics and procedural terrain texturing.

If I get the time I might just do a walkthrough tutorial if enough folks were interested.

Well it appears that I have once again been demoralised to the point of neural implosion yet again.

However, the day may come where the courage of modellers fail, where yet again, Poloflece refuses to enter competition due to the inevitability of defeat. But today is not that day. Today! I present you my WIP:

Well, as you can see it is very WIP. Texturing is going to be a nightmare aswell as getting the terain up to scratch.

EDIT: My Current submission (attached), just in case I can't get another one up later.

Poloflece, the texturing is pretty good and you got the mood perfect for the gates of Mordor, its often about lighting for this kind of scene, it would liven it up no end to have a few torches on the battlements and in front of gates so it appears occupied and breaks up the overall lighting you have just now. I would also scale down (or up) the gates themselves so they stand out more, at present they appear to blend into the rest of the walls.

You got a nice perspective going on with the rock in front, you should throw a few of those into the foreground with different scales and rotations to add more detail and break up the terrain.
Just my thoughts but you got a nice scene there, if you go another yard it will look great.

Edit* This is just my tuppence worth concerning scenes, I know the competition is not only about entire scenes being created and 3d modeling is the theme, just that some of us seem to like doing it this way and if you can then why not?
Its just presentation to show models in their environment, I dont want anyone to think this is how it needs to be done and modeling/texturing etc should be judged rather than nice atmospherics.

This competition needs a prize aside from a badge, I would be happy to donate any model pack of choice from my website to all three winners at the end of each comp.

That's very generous of you Rolfy. I am sure the winners of this comp will be extremely happy with some of your media!

I really hope i am one of those people now!! Why didn't you make this offer in the last one?! Willow and i would have really benefited from that! haha.

Also, with all these full scenes being made, i kind of want to make something different now.

I started modeling one item and somehow it turned into a scene.
Initially I could not figure out what to model, so I took a look at some of Tolkien's original sketches.
When I saw the one of Bag End Hall I thought it would be fitting. I tried to keep with Tolkien's
original design but then took some artistic license. It's still a WIP hopefully I find the time to finish it.

Link to Tolkien's Drawing. Scroll down page to Bag end hall drawing.

Far below Moria, there are abysses, spaces and tunnels not known even by the Dwarves. Unknown beings gnaw the earth and make them, far from the knowledge of any lore.

Thanks for the advice/crits. Also, that's amazing!

Once again I hope this isn't final, another go at the black gate, I'm going to add some torches as rolfy suggested (of course I have to model some first).

3D Best Textures: Willow
Notes: This is a great example of how a diversity of textures can bring a scene to life. Excellent final render. Most Excellent Dude!

3D Best Model: Stab in the Dark Software
Notes: I like how the simplicity of the modeled scene fits together. The scale looks good, the textures are clean and the final render makes the models look their best. Great Job!

3D Master: rolfy
Notes: Superb use of HDRI lighting in the final render. The scene has a very detailed and lifelike feel. Jolly good job mate!

Poloflece deserves an honorable mention, his model and render of the Gates to Mordor really has captured the doom and gloom feel of the story. Excellent work!

Just not my week guys lol! Lost internet and heat because of craziness. But here are the winners!! Congrats to everyone!!

But your right we apologize for not giving you a well deserved honorable mention and shall now eat my own liver as recompense, or perhaps since there actually was only one other entrant to mention and since its Christmas (belated) I would like to offer you a prize as well (so I can leave my liver intact), take your pick and let me know what you would like

Your model, was in fact, most excellent
