I started this thread to group all the users suggestions to make a video, directly or not, from the devices used with the AppGameKit engine.

Thx to all the users that will suggest.

Suggested till now PC :
- Fraps (i used it in the past to do videos, takes much space but not bad)
- VMWare (maybe too long process)
- Ashampoo Snap (10$ - 30$)
- VLC Player
- Debut Video Capture
- Reflector
- MSI Afterburner
- Adobe Captivate

Suggested till now MAC / iOS :
- Reflector (best price / quality)
- Camstasia
- Debut Video Capture
- Jing
- Display Recorder (Jailbreak needed)
- VMWare (maybe too long process)

Added links to the home pages.

For PC there is Fraps, although it can struggle sometimes to get a smooth video with busy games. I would have thought an actual camera would be the best bet if you have a half decent one. Not sure about phones and such though.

I haven't tried this, yet, but if I remember correctly, VMware has support for accelerated OpenGL 2.1, and it has a built-in feature to do video-screencapture.

So, for anyone using VMware, that's one viable option for recording AppGameKit gameplay/demo videos. And VMWare is also available for Mac.

Cheers,
AgentSam

PS. It would be nice to see a comparison of the performance (smoothness vs choppiness) of these screencapture options, although I suspect there is no absolute way to measure it, since it will be dependant on hardware also.

Camtasia is the most widely used. We use it for our training videos. It's far from free, though! I haven't tried with a game, but will over the weekend.

For PC, I have used Fraps successfully with AppGameKit even when recording 1920x1080 fullscreen video at 30FPS or even 60 FPS. I found that saving the recordings to a directory on a separate drive causes the least amount of lag. I used Fraps for my new game I developed for the Ultrabook competition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GSMJzRueZM

For iOS, if the device is jailbroken, Display Recorder does well to record high quality footage. I did this with Little Eggy developed in AGK. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcTNjwX9m6k

With VMWare you need to install the new OS too? If the process is too long i will not include it.
I will give a look to Camstasia.
And i will add Display Recorder too for the Jailbroken iOS.

Thx to you too, waiting someone new, we all hope free

Ashampoo Snap should work well, You can record a video of your game from on your computer. The latest versions cost $10 to $30, but I'm pretty sure you can get old versions for free, though I'm not sure where, it doesn't seem to be on the website anymore.

The answer to this question is... it depends. If you're in a team of programmers where everyone has VMware installed for testing with various OS versions, then it would be a simple matter of cloning an existing pre-installed virtual machine. (Or using one that you've already installed.)

But, if you're starting from scratch with VMware, then yes, you would first have to install an operating system into the virtual machine... From there on, however, it's very very snappy to go into "test mode" with VMware, since you can freeze the virtual environment at any point (much like hibernate, only faster).. and continue from that point at a later time.

From my answer it is propably obvious that I am a big lover of VMware. It is an absolutely indispensable tool that has utility far beyond screen capture, and perhaps for that reason, it is a bit of an overkill for such a simple task.

You need to be careful with virtual machines.

Technically, you can still only have one existing virtual instance for any given Windows license (unless you have a corporate/site license).

And, as far as I can tell, you can only do virtual Macs on a Mac. I'm pretty sure Apple does not allow, legally, anyone to do a virtual Mac on a Linux or Windows box. Certainly the same issue of licenses applies.

(I am extremely paranoid about having legitimate licenses for every OS and piece of software I run in my business or home. I would hate to have some software police show up at my door and hit me up for huge fines.)

Here's another, fairly lightweight solution - but unlike VMware, this one is free open-source software.

VLC Media Player

Here are a few pointers to get started...

To record desktop activity, you would start VLC, then select "Media > Streaming > Capture Device > Desktop". At the bottom of the dialog you will have the option to save save the streamed data, or "Play" it in realtime, which will allow you to get an estimate of the capture performance in realtime (without saving). Also, don't forget to set the desired framerate for recording -- it defaults to 1 FPS (silly really).

EDIT: One more thing... set "Caching" to somehere around 10ms for realtime preview. When you setup the capture for saving to disk, this should be larger.. the default is 300ms.

At 60 FPS VLC desktop capture was using around 40% CPU on my 3.2Ghz dual core. I think 40% CPU usage is a bit much. Fraps is certainly faster. But then again, VLC is free!

Ancient Lady... You do need to be careful with licenses for all non-free operating systems. However, I would disagree about being "careful with virtual machines" in general. They are an awesome tool to have.

And, assuming you have an MSDN Premium Subscription, you will have access to all available versions of Windows -- for development (the license excludes use in production environment, although the terminology is stupid, because development/testing is a part of production too.)

In any case, with VMware you will have no restrictions on how many instances of a free Linux distribution you are running on your computer. Or MySQL.. or Apache.. PHP, Gimp, Inkscape, etc etc... ad nauseum.

For the video of our 2 games i have also uploaded in the forum i have used
Debut Video Capture Software
it can grab a portion of the screen or the whole screen and has a lot of good settings. The same developer have many other software include a very nice and simple video editor also used from me to create the final version with cuts and other things.

Wow great boys, i add those recorders too to the first post.
Great, continue in this way and we will sure will find the best (maybe free) desktop recorder or device recorder!

Ah, if someone of you have tried more than one, please give to the tested softwares a vote, or just say who is the best and why.

Edit : I'm testing Debut in this moment...

Camtasia is available for the Mac, if that's of interest.

In an amazing reversal of normal pricing the PC version is £220 and the Mac version £78.

AgentSam, I didn't mean virtual machines for Linux instances. I meant using a virtual machine for an Apple OS instance on a Linux or Windows computer.

I didn't know about the MSDN license bits. That might be fine, but not everyone invests in that.

I agree that virtual machines are great for testing. I have a bunch of different windows ones set up on my Linux box, each with different versions of Internet Explorer, so that I can test the web pages I develop in different environments. (You can only have one version of Internet Explorer running in Windows, unlike most other browsers. I have 6 different versions of Firefox on my main windows development computer.)

I use Fraps.

I usually put the videos together using windows movie maker, but it seems it has issues when it comes to publishing 16:9 resolution. There is a cloud version but I found that a little frustrating, but apparently it's not as bugged.

I recently bought Power Director 11, not too expensive, very easy to use and so far I have had no problems. More features and control than windows movie maker of course.

I'm getting better the more vids I make but there is still tons of features and effects I have not tried yet.

For iOS, I use https://www.reflectorapp.com/. Press record, do your thing, save. Doesn't look smooth while recording, but the saved video always comes out silky smooth for me.

Life would be easier if I had the source code.

TIP

While recording gameplay video/audio, it may be a good idea to enable the "Stereo Mixer" device -- which may, by default, be hidden on Windows 7 systems.

So, here's a link to a short article on how to enable it:
How To Enable “Stereo Mix” in Windows 7 (to Record Audio)

After my tip on how to enable the stereo-mixer device, here are a few follow-up links, which provide information on how to record video/audio with the open-source VLC player.

Unfortunately, the following articles do not provide the _exact_ steps necessary to get this working. So, you will need to rely on your own skills to apply this information:

how to use VLC to stream your desktop live (windows) with audio (or stream a DVD)
* Unlike explained in this article, you do not actually need to "stream" the video to get this working. You can also enable realtime preview of the captured video/audio, or you can just save directly to a file.

list of available directshow screen capture filters
* Pick one..

I used the latest VLC and tested this using the DirectShow filter by RDP (Roger Pack), at:
https://github.com/rdp/screen-capture-recorder-to-video-windows-free
* For more information, check out the readme file of this filter -- I felt that the readme was more helpful than the "how to" video above.

Scary Little Rabbit,

Question: Does the Afterburner utility (with the Predator Video Capture component) work with any graphics card, or does the software enforce a limitation to only a selection of MSI's own graphics hardware?

Yes, you can use it for commercial use:

I used Adobe Captivate on my old work laptop. Bit resource hungry and had issues syncing sounds to events, but not too bad for it being free from work.
