The online language Docs differ from the AppGameKit Book in that the book states:

SetParticlesVisible()
No particle updating takes place when the particles are invisible, so if the particles are made to reappear, their position and velocity will match those at the time the particles were hidden.

Whereas the online language docs say:
Particles will still update whilst hidden....

What this means to me as I attempt to use particles to simulate the water wake of the propellers on a ship is "the emitter position and velocity will match those at the time the particles were hidden."

That makes for an unrealistic water wake for a second as the engines start up ...

Does anyone have any ideas how to cope with this?

You can try using UpdateParticles.

I did manage to find a work around in my own project but the issue of the discrepancy between the two pieces of documentation still stands.... :-(
