Hi Guys, A while ago last year I started something called TGC Forum Shared Hosting, which currently houses just the one project, but I plan to expand the project further and implement it onto a WordPress managed platform once I get further into Theme Development [Yup Development not Design lol]

Anyway I wish to introduce my latest free forum offering:

A while ago Jericho2Day with the help of one other started something called Darkbit a torrent based hosting platform, to which I was intrigued but found that hardly anybody kept their computers on 24/7 as I do... and the project soon met oblivion...

I got in touch with Jericho2Day and as awesome as he is he sent me the files which he had just in time, these file are now hosted in my Repository for all to access directly via HTTP!, no special torrent software required, and '0' 'ZERO' waiting time! NO ADS and no funny Naked adverts like other direct download sites [Not in anyway talking about the awesome DarkBit site here], you do not even need to register to download!

However, should you have something to add to the Repository, there are two ways to do this...

1- Join the Repository by registering, as soon as you sign in for the first time a PRIVATE gallery is created for you, it is not immediately visible to the public and I hope you keep it just so, so that only the Repository galleries remain viewable, I will check back often to ensure that this is the case. You then upload your files to which I believe the current file size limit is a generous 500MB! provided you have a stable connection... There is a certain method to upload large files [upload Applet, which requires you have Java installed {Do not download the Java file from the server, go to www.java.com to download the latest version} which allows you to multi upload!] Once you have uploaded your file/files, and filled out a description and added any links which refer to any TGC Forum Related Threads, you can email me through my profile email and I will move them into the relevant public folders once I test the downloads.

2- You contact me via my forum profile email and ask me to set up a temporary FTP folder or request me to download it through any other setup such as the TGC Download Button on a Thread Post on a WIP or Showcase etc, and give me the description [I Usually copy the first Thread Post related to the file] and links to place on the files Description... [Note: I do not have the patience to download through Adult advert filled time delay sites, ask me to give you some FTP space and if you need the help to use something like FileZilla I will happily assist] and then I will upload it to the relevant Repository album

I also make requests sometimes on users threads at the moment, hopefully this will become highly populated... soon!

Anyway the whole point of this Repository is to make it easy to find long lost files, find them easier, and browse through to find something that interests you!

I would like to ask if some forumites can assist me with populating the descriptions and Forum Thread links for the DarkBit files, some of them I am unfamiliar with myself.

I hope many of you will make use of the service, I plan and have every intention to keep it running for many years to come, it costs me the price of 3 beers in a bar a month or so to host up and thus not a massive cost to keep going, I am not looking for contributions of finance at all, though should the thought arise I have my PayPal at the ready XD

Anyway, drop by, I am terrible at introducing things related to my own projects, something I aim to improve as time goes by... and have a look around, and if you get any ideas to add something you found on the forum that is free to share, please ask permission first or if it is your own item, share it on the Repository, and if permission is difficult to obtain for whatever reason, be sure to link back to the thread post it relates to!

One last thing... regarding Version History... You are welcome to add 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 2.0 etc to the Repository! as sometimes users will want to try older variants, you are welcome to request your previous versions to be hidden [Kept on the server this way in case you still wish to access it... I can move it into your private album so that you can decide to delete it or what not yourself]

Can you give us a few more reasons why using this would be better than including any relevant files to a post as an attachment on the TGC forums?

It seems to me that the TGC forums retain a lot of old binaries and images just fine, without the need for a service like this. Although, it looks like there is a 50MB size limit for attachments on the TGC forum which is relatively small, of course. (So for larger attachments, I can see a need for this service.)

I do not think that using "Gallery" (photo album organizer) for this service is the best option, though! For example, in the "DarkBit Archive" album, most of the screen real-estate is taken by the large thumbnail placeholder images... which provide NO additional information about what the entries contain, and thus are completely useless. And once opened, the huge two column layout (with link on the left, description on the right) is simply wasteful and annoying.

This service might be useful, but it will definately need to be reimplemented.

Hey AgentSam - I welcome criticism mostly openly so let me tackle the questions first before adding any further reasons,

Indeed, it is to tackle the 50MB Limit, and also avoid having Just the one option of a silly service which throws adverts to fund even paid accounts... not to say you should not also upload to them as a mirror of sorts... Essentially I set this up for various Linked downloads that are now hosted on dead sites which no longer exist, some users still have these files on their hard drives, and with no obvious method to share it other than putting up a new thread, and not being the original owner, makes for an awkward scenario... Having a Repository location removes the odd responses and repeat 'I said I did not make this stop asking me to add XXX feature' ^^ also some of said files also exceed the 50MB limit...

I could revert back to the default theme... which is somewhat cleaner, but I figured most techies of us on here would like the black these a lot haha, If you notice the AppGameKit and DBPro Albums, there is a bit of added information like a summary below the images, and further detail in the download section... I am using Gallery server as actually it was designed to handle various files, but primarily designed as a photo gallery, that does not mean I should limit it to just pictures... specially not when it handles large files so well... I agree that the Download link being all the way half way through the description is irritating, but as the content creator, woulf you not want downloaders to read at least SOME of the information associated before they clicked download, to top it off, it becomes familiar after a while

My main aim for this service is to allow some place for files hosted anywhere to be kind of archived in a single location, easily searched for, and kind of like a magazine where you see something that may interest you and click, and there it is...

Regarding the images, I decided to use a stand in Image, so that each item had a form of representation, allowing the end user to know what it is associated with without having to read too much... and should a user wish to implement their own 150x150 Thumbnail, they are welcome to do so

I am happy to adjust anything where possible, and should it be requested even switch between themes every few days to get feedback on the few that are available... I would like to make it as useful to everybody as possible

I just hope it comes in use for many!

One more question - I assume it's hosted on one of your home (or work) computers. What's the downstream/upstream bandwidth?

The servers are UK based, I keep it company policy to try using national services as first options then foreign services should the service not be available nationally.

Yeah I think I looked at your GUI source. I'm just thinking an exclusive TGC repo, like GitHub for AppGameKit and DBP would be awesome.

When you create an account... Your album is already private and hidden from public view... You can then create a sub album with public access and then password lock it so that only authorised users may access it >_<

There is a java based mass uploader too again download it from java.com the gallery has an outdated one it pushes out to you... I will try to hunt it down if it is on the server and replace it with a newer release...

Added 10GB new user limits, you can upload up to 10GB for now per user

UPDATE!

Changed the registration method to Confirmation Email method.

Should allow you to start uploading as soon as you register.

Also It may be a little bit confusing for new users, and if a guide of how to upload or navigate is required, just email me with specifics and I will reply, I am considering a video tutorial at some point later this week.

I will hopefully create a bespoke thumbnail for some files such as these in the near future

Please note these files are now discontinued as Sergey K no longer has the Source code... so there is no certainty that these files will work on recent DBP versions or recent Windows releases...

Yeah sorry Jeku, I was thinking to just append the last post, but figured some might like to know of some of the items being posted... I thought the general rule was if you had something to add anyway?

As I am not just posting nonsense, I figured it was ok, but sure... Will just update the first post then and once in a long while post a collective change if it goes over 60 down the list, I think the default thread view should be 100 as standard these days... hardly anybody, specially not newcomers ever click next page...

But yeah back to reading for me [I started with C# .NET this week]

I registered and tried to upload a demo version of my game, there looks like I accidentially created a new album.
How do I add new stuff to the DBpro section directly?

Just to explain, I wanted to keep control over it getting messy, and I anticipated only a handful of additions per month, so I decided manually managing it made the best sense...

So having said that, please follow the above tutorial, read my first post and I will move it when you inform me of the updates

This is great and all, but personally there are a few problems with external websites that will always exist: mostly reliability / longevity. I make a point to always upload my files to TGC when possible, because there's nothing I find more frustrating than looking through a 10 year old thread and finding all the download links are invalid. I'm not going to upload files to a 3rd party website if I don't know how long that website will be up, or even if the correct directory structure will be permanent so the file can always be downloaded. Until your website is better than the default TGC uploading applet, not many people are going to use it because the disadvantages outweigh the benefit of an increased file size. I appreciate what you're doing, don't get me wrong! but if you're wondering why not many files have been uploaded that's probably the reason.

I respect that view and it is precisely why I created this, my company is not going anywhere and even if it did, the site costs me very little to keep up, and as you said it has an increased file size, but it is not here to replace file embedding on the forum at all, simply to compliment it and also act as a centralised repository for quicker searching and a collective point, it is entirely up to the users to decide if they will use the service... Also it is as you will see a good place for large collections of the older forum files as you mentioned the files bow with dead links...

Also many users resort to pointless alternatives to the likes of Dropbox which for now does not flood you with adverts and I hope they continue not to, but the other so called free services are a bit too irritating and often contain malware through their sites... Not to mention the long waits sometimes...

But again this is a complimentary repository, I am not asking anybody to use it as a single location but use it more as a mirror site... But it will be and is a reliable single source site as well...

If you have anything to store on it, please do

To re-iterate you have both a public and private storage area as well of 10 GB to boot!
