Is this finally an excuse for me to build an itx or APU system to hook up to the Big Ol' Screen?

Is anyone already playing any of the Linux games?
Are there any \ enough of them making it really worth building a dedicated system for, yet?

There's been a steady increase in games porting to Linux even before Steam for Linux was conceived: games like Minecraft, Amnesia, FTL, Psychonauts, to name a few, already ran on Linux but Steam is going to be huge!
Valve are fervently working away at this and are obviously desperate to escape the restrictions of Windows 8.

This is great news for Linux in general, not just games, it will bring many people to the platform who either still hadn't heard of it or saw it as a weird OS for nerds/programmers.

Now all I need are Linux versions of Dark Basic and Mount & Blade and I can ditch Windows for good!

I don't see much future for Windows as it currently is if Linux becomes the predominant gaming platform.

This depends on which distro you used and how long ago. I'd say the latest Ubuntu is far less hassle than than Windows 7.

All the "seccurity" features is enough hassle for me. If more software suported it, I would go to linux right away

Well, if more and more support for linux starts happening then Microsoft will have serious problems... Finally...

I use Linux Mint 14 (Cinnamon Desktop)... So much nicer than Windows...

It'd be great to see a lot of the top notch games out for linux, I still play the Quake III engine remakes on linux, and they run perfect on my crappy laptop.

I don't find Windows to be a hassle (I find it less of a hassle now it's stable), you can turn off any annoying security features. Heck, I am even a fan of Windows 8.

However, I don't have a problem with Linux either, I have a dual boot with Ubuntu. I think it's great more games are going Linux and I would love to see it become a lot more popular. I think competition is healthy for the market. The thing I also like is that more development tools are being directed at Linux, we've always had the Torque Game Engine and I see Unity3D now supports Linux (though there isn't a Linux version of the editor, but they didn't always have a Windows version either, so who knows?). I know there's people who'd like to see AppGameKit supported on Linux as well. If Linux was more popular, I am sure TGC would consider it.

I think it's a step in the right direction for Valve and I hope they encourage more folks to develop for the platform.

[edit]
I've installed Steam onto my Ubuntu partition, it runs pretty smoothly, sadly not many of my games are Linux compatible though. Out of my collection, VVVVVV, Counter Strike: Source, Beat Hazard, World of Goo, Bastion and Book of Unwritten Tales work. I tried World of Goo so far. If they get enough support from developers, I'm sure having Steam on Linux would be worthwhile.

Not in the next 10 years... no way Even if Valve throws its full weight behind Linux, all of its games are still primarily targeted for PC and console. I really can't see Linux overtaking Windows as a gaming platform let alone giving it no future at all

It will be hard to overtake Windows, but I think it could become a respectable gaming platform, kind of like MacOS is becoming. Windows already has a huge catalogue of games available and is the most popular for gamers. I think Valve's move will make Linux more attractive for indie developers but not so much AAA developers, but that might be just enough to make Linux fans squee.

This could be good for Microsoft too, from a quality standpoint, they have had a very unhealthy monopoly for far too long.

Why is it that anytime an OS is included in a subject matter, it instantly turns into some kind of a debate? -Useless-

Anyhow, for anyone that was curious I've gathered and tested some parts from the bone yard in my closet and waiting on a small form factor case to come in the mail.

Okay, I read part of that review and got bored as it was a deliberately sarcastic and nonsensical review.

Especially the part about having to reboot after each install, noone does that.
