Geek Culture / Have to have Google+ for YouTube uploads?

So, on my non-Airslide YouTube account (the one I was planning to use for things attached to my actual name) I got prompted to "use my real name" as my YouTube account name.

Since the account was meant to be used that way, I said, "Ok!".

I must have missed some fine print (or maybe even something obvious), because it promptly converted that entire Google account to Google+, which I was not thrilled by. So I deactivated the Google+ features (I'm glad they at least let you do that) and reverted it to a standard Google account.

All is well except, despite having a YouTube user name prior to this (which was just my real name minus spaces), the name appears to be gone entirely (only my email address shows up) and in order to create a channel (and thus upload anything) I HAVE to create a Google+ account.

Anyone else run into this? I was starting to think I couldn't dislike Google any more than I already did but they seem to find creative new ways to deter me from using their products.

What's the issue? Just don't use it. Create the channel and never bother with google+, it doesn't force you to xD

when i made a youtube account it still had the option of attaching it to my Gmail. That was before google + I uploaded a couple of videos a few days ago and didnt have any problems.

Yeah, all three of my account are connected to a G+ account and I haven't noticed any difference, just don't use those features if you don't want them.

The real issue I have with it is that the account was just fine before, and now it refuses to let me use it the old way, even though I have another account doing just that. I'll probably get over it and make a Google+ account eventually (but that doesn't mean I'll like it).

Maybe it would be better if it felt less arbitrary – it sort of feels like they are just trying to boost Google+'s user base. There's probably more to it than that (maybe trying to improve the quality of comments by having people use their real names, like on Google Play) but that's hard to appreciate when the change isn't mandatory for all users.

I find it annoying the way it badgers you every five minutes to change your name then wants an explanation why you don't want to change your name!? Thankfully it seems to have given that up now.
