Ok, I'm not actually leaving forever, or particularly leaving.

But what I am doing is ceasing any and all projects, servers and this or that's I'm currently working on until my kids are in school *and* I find I have a substantial amount of time available. I want to focus more on family and to a lesser degree, my current career.

In my spare minutes you might find me still stalking the posts here and evaluating other people's projects (wilderbeast here's lookin' at you) and otherwise chatting it up just so I can keep a basic understanding of what's going on in the computer world.

Anyway, this isn't a going away thread, this isn't a hey what's bitJericho up to thread, this is a "what do you think" thread. Is this going to make me a happier family man? Is this going to make me resentful? Who's all done this sort of thing and how did it work for you?

Well, I don't really think you should think about it too much. Fix what's wrong or put more time in new/other things if you felt you've neglected stuff. Priorities change and will change again in the future. Do what feels right and spending some time with family is always good!

I don't really know you, so I apologise if I'm too forward. Just my two cents.

What servers?

If you need somewhere to leave accessible your projects you are welcome to use my repository... just email me once uploaded to tell me which category to place them into...

I know what you mean by this, as I am in a similar boat as of recent too... intense studying going on for me right now too...

For that reason my activity on the forum has dropped 25% since January... [Yes I actually have a way to monitor my activity ^^]

Good man bitJerico be sure to make them happy, and be sure to let us know when you get back into the swing of things too

Family should always be first. I'm not sure if you actually like your career but if you do that should also take second place.

Even though you don't know me or I you, I still wish you well. I, too, along with Mr. Valentine, might have a place for you on the web.

THEORY - you know everything but nothing works. PRACTICE - when everything works but don't know why. For me, theory and practice are combined: nothing works and I don't know why.

Hopefully I continue to see Rimmer floating around the forums still!

As far as family and work...
Depends on how much you intend to lessen your interest in your career. Career-wise, you should pay attention and give it your fullest. I know you should do the same for the family as well, but without the income and reliability of work, it'd be hard to take care of your family!

If your kids are still pre-school, then you should spend as much time with them as possible. They aren't going to remember the day to day antics of dad, but they will have built an impression of you by your actions by the time they do start having memories of you.

Also, spend as much time with your wife as possible. Once the nest is empty, she'll still be there. And she WILL remember your antics.

All in all, work, wife, and kids should be your priorities. Any hobbies should't be neglected (you still need YOU time(helps keep a chipper spirit around the kiddos)) but should come second to the above.

/MyTwoCents. Good luck with whatever you do!

Hey! How much time did you put in your tech-hobby before if I might ask?

Thanks for all the great responses. I never gave it up completely because I did feel like I would end up being resentful. So off and on I would put in a good few hours at a time a couple days a month but it seems like I can't get enough time to be particularly useful at completing projects nor am I being a particularly good person to our family when I get in that headspace. Add to that, I feel like I spend the majority of my time thinking on things so I can work for an hour or two here or there instead of thinking about the family. So since I haven't been particularly good at finishing anything and I'm feeling like I'm neglecting my familial duties, I figure it's only right I give up the programming and related technical things for now and see if I and the family become happier as a result.

My job now is of or relating to technology in a way and is really fun so I think I will feel fulfilled over the coming years in that area, so I'm ready to give my career and my family a full go and keep my hobbies to a minimum until I really do have time for such things.
