Hi all, I have been absent for a while, away working in Tasmania helping put in the taxiway for Hobart Airport. I earned enough to allow a little luxury and that was my new pc, not top of the range but it has an i3 processor and 2 gig of video ram which are things I value. especially its au $899 pricetag which strongly motivated me to take the plunge.

anyway i am getting off topic, this pc has windows 8 and I am sooo lost. I have been a windows user for so long and have always found it intuitive. for the first time ever, i am confused by an OS. I feel old! lol
someone out there has to be able to relate to this, with the new front end shift. getting to control panel used to be a simple matter, now i somehow fumbled my way there, and god help me if i need to go there again. I am sadly reminded of my mother trying to figure out the simplest of pc operations. It really cannot be this hard!! granted I have been a windows 8 user for under an hour, but I cannot believe how different this front end is.

any win8 veterans please can you offer any advice to a fluent windows 98,xp,win7 user? I am not used to being so incompetent using a pc. There has to be some simple key that ties the new windows to the old ones.
Thankyou

Kezzla

desktop! I could kiss you desktop!
thankyou indicium!
also, mouse in corner + click settings = control panel!

holy crap it's coming together. That has really broken up that android but not android outer shell.

the start menu now fills the screen when in that mode...

It seems that that was the prod that I needed.

I felt so lost, now I have a sniff of the scent. onward!!!

The OS will appear very new and alien when you start, but when you get used to it, it starts to make sense.

For learning the new interface here are a few things I'd keep in mind.

-Move your mouse to any of the corners on your screen
-Learn to use 'right' click
-Become friends with the 'start' button on your desktop
-All metro windows can be moved and docked by clicking and dragging the top of the screen
-The search function in your start bar will work with any metro app with a search feature

I know some people have had difficulty, but I found it really easy to get into once I figured out the basics.

Of course, it is possible to download 3rd party software to add the old start menu to your OS, if you prefer it that way.

Here's some other tips if you use metro apps:
to close an app: click at the top of the screen and drag it down to the bottom.
to switch apps fast: place mouse in top left of screen and drag down. This will bring up a list of all your apps that are open, use middle mouse to close an app (or right click>close) and left click the view app.
View 'All apps' right-click anywhere on start screen and click 'all apps' near bottom right of screen. (THIS IS THE EQUIVALENT OF START-MENU>ALL PROGRAMS)
Win+tab will now switch apps
Right-Click in bottom left of screen while in desktop mode will bring up the 'super menu' (has thing like Admin Cmd and Control Panel and stuff)
Shut down from desktop mode, left-click on an empty place on the task bar, hit Alt-f4 make sure it's set to Shut Down, click ok.
(slow way: move mouse to bottom right of screen and drag up>settings>power>shut down

Hope some of these help, I had to figure it all out myself

legend! thankyou miss jojo.

Windows 8 is making more and more sense now that I have found my feet. I had been wondering how to get rid of the apps once they take over the screen.
I guess the hard bit is always looking for the start menu and expecting to see it pop up, where as now it is the full screen instead of a little tool bar. Originally I was thinking it was some separate annoying interface that had barely anything useful on it and was really hard to get rid of.
now I know to drag it around to see stuff that is off to the side. desktop icon banishes it.

now that my initial issues are ironed out I am picking up speed again and enjoying how the new windows works.

It was a little frustrating how heavy hand-idly it guards my c drive, but i have an app to circumvent that now

it seems to run well and I have had no issues with the os performance.

thank you all for your help.
