Not really a big difference from the old version.

AFAIK it's been re-written to not use DirectPlay, which means certain significant netplay bugs should now be fixed.

If you are unsure what a particular area will do then please consult the Assistance Table at the bottom of this page.

Yeah, but you're right, for the most part, gameplay mechanics of the game are the same. There have been major internal reworks in the graphics engine, and the netplay engine. The highlight of it for me is that it is now steam integrated, so one can now easily play online multiplayer. I was restricted to LAN before. There is also steam workshop integration, but I haven't used that much yet. The graphics have also been enhanced, and 1080p and multimonitor support is there now. To be honest, the only part I really care about is the online multiplayer!

We should get everyone's steam names together or start a Steam group, or something like that!

EDIT

Alright, I've started a TGC age of empires II HD group. Just find me on steam or post your steam profile, and you'll be invited to the group. Let's get 8 players so we can all play!

There already is a TGC Group on Steam: The Game Creators Forumers

we should do a group game together one day maybe some Battlefield 3, COD Black Ops 2, Left for dead 2, Age of empire, or whatever.

Why remake the game instead of calling it AoE4?

@Phaelax

AOE 3 doesn't exist?

It does...

I dunno if Phaelax is sarcastically implying all the AoE games are rehashes, but I imagine the fact that it's a remake is why it isn't labelled as AoE4.

I'm confused...I remember seeing AoE3 on a shelf somewhere.

Real shame about Ensemble, after how Halo Wars flopped and all.

Yes there is an AOE3, you can buy it on steam. I think, however, that 2 is seen as a better version by some and so 3 is imagines to not exist.

Halo Wars was an awesome game. I had more fun playing that than any other Halo game. I had some epic battles. I miss playing that game.

What I meant was, if they're rewriting the whole game, why call it AoE2 and not just AoE4?

And I liked 3, but 2:age of kings was best.

AoE 2 HD is just a graphical/network overhaul that includes the Conquerors Expansion. Gameplay is the same as the Conquerors Expansion IIRC as is pretty much everything else under the hood, excepting netcode and graphics of course.

I enjoyed 3, but to be honest 2 was much better.

Looks like I may end up grabbing this too.

Oh I loved it as a fan, too. But commercially and critically, it got panned. :/

I found it's not a big difference but in the last 12 hours I've played more multiplayer matches than in the last couple years. The lobby is great! It's fun to actually find people to play with.

Is this the one Star Wars Battlegrounds (not Battlefront) was based off of? Used to have a ton of fun at LAN sessions.

So they redid the netcode, and removed LAN completely?

No thanks,

Yeah, you have to play w/people with Steam accounts now. It's not that hard to set up though.

So thoughts on this so far? I haven't played it yet, but I've heard the multiplayer is really poorly implemented, being very glitchy.

It is a bit buggy sometimes (with the infamous (out of sync) errors and some lag sometimes) but it isn't that bad and IMO is worth it for the huge gain of being able to play with a whole steam community.
