Not sure if you guys have seen this article.
The devs of Dustforce let us know their sales figures and costs.
It is an interesting read as I consider Dustforce a successful game.

I hope more indie devs follow suit on this.

EDIT: fixed href... must have accidentally got a CR in there somewhere.

Notice "team" and "cost of living x time x number of developers" and "$100,000", and this isn't even close to AAA and no 3D...

Oh wait... people should use this as inspiration, a single 3D model or sprite set is only >$800 and you can make animations for it in all the stable animation tools with modern pipelines. Once you publish it people just buy it too...

There is also another thing (i think, and i have experience only on apple store) very important more than he said...
The Advertisement!!
If you invest some money in advertisement you will go very up in the ranking, and if you continue to invest the money done with adv, you could continue to remain in the top 20.
I think to use the ads when i will be able to invest 5000$ (the minimum for apple) on the soccer game or another big download game.

At the end of the article there is an update where he briefly talks about advertising through http://indieviddy.com/
$5k is a TON of money for a small indie project.
I'm betting that Mary can do something for you.
I'll be checking out her services when I release my next game.

I give it a look. Thx

Edit : Well but i meant to invest in adv directly with Apple. So you are sure you will sell download.
I think is this the sense of the adv with Apple. Maybe i didn't understood at the phone (as i'm italian).

Anyway i can share one of my experiences...
Until September/October 2012 the old Apple Store on iphone/ipod and ipad made all developers could sell in an average mode.

As i have 2 years of graphics statistics i see immediately the difference when they released iOS 6.
If before the download was basically linear, now they are crazy, like the electrocardiogram.

But even if i have 50 applications now, i always see a flat push from apple.
I start to think that Apple have a new formula for the ranking, i mean....

Suppose i earned 100$ average with 15 apps, when i reached 25 apps i reached 120$
but when i reached 30/45 they flatted me to 120/140

This is only an example, but i hope you understand what i mean.
Seems there is a thing that make you earn much only if they like your game or your app.

What you think about?

They could very likely have different tiers. It seems like they should have to share their payment agreement with you. I didn't pay any attention because my app is ad supported.
Thanks for sharing your experience!

Just wanted to add this article in.
Puzzles and Dragons has made ridiculous amounts of money in Japan. If you've not played it and are interested in making an FTP game monetized by microtransactions, then you should check it out.
I admit the game is pretty addictive, but the mechanics aren't overly complex, just flashy and pokemon-esque.
