In this year and next, sales will of course be boosted by the new consoles on show but, crucially, experts don't think the market can make up the lost ground.

Why? Depending on how you're reading this, the answer could be in your hand."

Hear ye, hear ye! Listen to the Royal Prophecy! What? Yes, another. I know that you have heard it hundred times! Don't interrupt me, peasant! Guards, take him away! So listen! Our Royal Lord Expert says that days of ye olde consoles are gone...

P.S. I mean that entertainment always was and always be, it's just changes from time to time. There always be gaming devices.

Even public execution as form of entertainment is still remains.

Well, this generation won't be as all-encompassing as that last generation, because consumers have made do for the last 6 years, made do with bad decisions, bad security, bad hardware - and now the shiny new consoles are coming out, we're supposed to forget all the bad, and just hand over our money, based on hearsay and one companies desire to dictate what happens and doesn't happen in an industry they are helping to destroy.

I kinda neglected the PS3 last time, this time I think I'll get a PS4, pretend the XBox One doesn't exist, and enjoy transmitted games on my Vita just like Sony promised me.

The PS4 might do about as well as the PS3 in the long run - but the Xbox One, heck M$ have burned that poor thing to the ground before it even got started. Note to M$, other gaming platforms are available, you don't have a monopoly and never will, because the world of gaming couldn't cope with M$ being in too much control.

I have a crazy idea of Sony and M$ having one ultimate console named Play Box. And Nintendo for casual family.

I have this crazy idea about Nintendo being hardcore and the rest being crap..
wait? too far back? DANGIT

nah but i've never managed to fully see wii as "casual family" - might just be because of zelda and mario.. and those games are in my heart - not casual ^^

I think that with Nintendo, it's just that they games are targetted at Japanese audiences, they tend to be a bit more challenging.

I mean, if you take Pikmin2 and Overlord, which is kinda like a western version of the same idea - controlling a main character with several minions with different abilities. Anyway, Pikmin2 appears to be a kids game, but it's the most difficult game I've ever played. Overlord is mindless tat in comparison.

The Wii has it's fair share of moronic crud, but there's some real hardcore games in there as well, even if they don't appear that way on the surface. Nintendo is moving into less hardcore territory though, the WiiU is aimed at the same audience as the Wii ended up targetting. I wonder how many hardcore gamers are left from the GameCube era - I'm guessing the real hardcore gamers have mostly switched to PC and games like LOL.

My PS3 died quite quickly. My Gamecube is still the best console. At least the New Tomb Raider is a step backwards, and that is the way to go. I want Destruction Derby, Wipeout, and all of the old games bought up to date. Consoles are dying because games are all becoming FPS. The prices of games are high too. Blu Ray crystals burn up too quickly as well.

For me the fact that you can get so many quality PC games for such a low price means I'd never switch to consoles. And the fact that you have online 'catalogue' stores like GoG.com and Steam, that provide games from many many years back, where video game outlets would no longer have them.

l2P nOob. I find it a bit tricky using a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard, but I find it fun nonetheless. I've had quite a bit of fun playing Black Ops 2 online on the PS3, despite the silly killstreak system that basically gives advantages to players that are already raping everyone else...

Shooters on consoles? I was trained to use the inverted joystick from back in the days of the Nintendo 64, so I'm completely useless in newer games with a non-inverted joystick.

Give me a mouse any day.

Well it's probably the end of an era FOR ME, personally. Not interested in any of the new consoles.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but when I hear about "features" like "cloud" and "integrated with social media", I'm immediately turned off.

Never seen such apathy and hostility toward a new generation of consoles, it's really depressing. New consoles used to generate such excitement.

Microsoft has really killed the XBox One for me before it's even been released. I have a feeling the PS4 won't be much different, but Sony at least has the sense to not alienate all their customers before it's even released.

I got my 360 in 2008, I think they were originally released back in 2006, as much as I would like to think that it was not so long ago, but that was 7 years ago. I remember getting my PS2 back in 2000 (I think) as well! A whopping £200! Now I can pick up up for £20 in Cash Converters.

I think it's been enough years. To be honest, I am not yet excited about the new consoles, however, I am keeping an open mind, so lets see what E3 brings. However, it wasn't so long ago that I got back into being a PC gamer, so I'll prolly only pick up a console if it has exclusive titles I want.

Last console I bought was an SNES.... in 2006. So frankly I'm not really concerned with what happens to current consoles.

If they're only going to bundle up some 'off the shelf' hardware in a styled box, then it's probably time we moved towards a open standard for consoles and be done with it. Then again, after 3DO made such a mess of it, nobodies that brave.

Now that E3 has given us more info about the upcoming consoles, I can see myself buying a new console, the PS4 that is. XBox One doesn't seem to be quite sure where it is yet and what has been said isn't exactly attractive.

I can see why they're looking at the 'cloud' and social media, I reckon they're going to try and make consoles the new 'smart' device, I mean we've got smart phones, tablets, TVs and TV upgraders, so it's natural for them to get into it. Whilst the 360 and PS3 tried somewhat to fill that side of the market. You've of course got the Ouya with Android and it seems there's a popular market for any smart devices hence, it's not longer just smart phones. Looking at the evolution of the console it is becoming more and more of an all-in-one device, which I think can help it, just so long as it doesn't stop functioning as a console.

Whilst I'm sure the idea of social media and even cloud networking may be a turn off, but it isn't necessarily a mandatory route. Hopefully with any cloud services (like cloud saving) I hope it takes the route of Steam where it's not mandatory and saves can be made to desktop rather than the PC rerelease of FFVII, where it was forced and if you had network troubles or even the game struggled with the cloud server, you're buggered.
