We're a few days late but don't worry, this will be a simpler challenge.
You have until July 31st to create a board game. It can be an original idea or a recreation of an existing game.
Card games and any other variety of game that is classically played on a table are allowed.

If you want to push yourself you can create any type of turn-based game.

Regular Rules Apply
* To enter, post your game idea below.
* All programming languages are permitted.
* All entries must be free to play.
* All source code and media assets for entries must be made freely available.
* Please include a reference to BoardJam somewhere in your game.
* Deadline is midnight of the final day of the month.

Please share your progress with us here, no matter how trivial, communication helps keep everyone motivated.

A word from a procrastinator...
We seem to be getting more entries for these jams every month, not many are getting completed but that's okay. It's not easy to get a project finished in a month, especially when there are other things to do in life than programming. I would rather see twenty entries and only one completed than receive just the one entry. Don't code in the shadows because you don't want to commit yourself. These jams are just for fun, there is no penalty for flunking out; and who knows, your half-finished game might inspire someone else to make something great, or even continue the project where you left off. (Remember to make your code and assets available to everyone.)

Cheers

** PS/Note to the Mods ** If we have enough people interested I'm thinking about making next month BuddyJam, where entrants will pair up to make a game together. Would this be okay under the AUP? (Regarding team requests)

Ok, I will enter, though time is an issue for me.

I will at least try to get something done.

My idea is to make a board game where you can have 2-4 players each with their own side. The board will be around 30 x 30 square spaces.
You will move in a traditional snakes and ladders manner.
the aim of the game is to make it to the opposite corner and back again first.

as you role the dice and move along, you earn spending points equal to your dice roll.

These points can be used to manipulate a space on the board.

so you can either roll the dice and move and earn points, or forfeit the roll and spend some or all of your points on manipulating the space you are currently on.

you can make a bonus or punishment square, there will be various traps and treasures you can buy for various amounts of points.
they will be things like...
go back/Forward X amount of spaces.
Lose/gain some points.
miss a turn.
Roll x number to move
swap places with a player etc...

I am not sure about the actual actions at this point, I will have to play with the demo to make fun punishments and treasures.

so basically the idea is that you start with a blank board and a simple objective, as time goes on the board becomes more and more of a minefield. you not only have to cross the board but make it back too, so if you go hard on the punishments you may just set yourself back too.

the players corners will overlap so even from the start there should be some degree of action.

... oh and why not have some kind of fight if two pieces occupy the same square!

The more I think about this the more things I want to put in... I think i will start with what I have here and then see how far I can take it.

I'm not a complete idiot -- Some parts are just missing.

Well, we didn't see a single completed entry for retrojam, so I guess good luck with this one!

I've been thinking about designing a variant of Risk that merges it with a god game. I haven't decided what the board will look like or the details but I have a general idea that sounds fun...

Each player takes the role of a god. There is a contest between the gods to prove who is the most cunning of all. They will compete for world domination through their mortal followers.
* It has been agreed that simply wiping out any non-believers would be foul play, so these must be converted or killed by other mortals.
* It has also been agreed that each god may only directly communicate with one mortal at a time (until it dies). This lucky mortal shall be named the "prophet".
* Gods may also create false prophets to mislead the other gods, and spread the risk of their real prophet being eliminated.
* Through the command of the gods, their prophets must gather followers and create a religion that will spread out across the world.

ever play Risk:Godstorm?

http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/10383/risk-godstorm

really fun edition. Description from the page:
Quote: "
The game of Earthly Domination and Beyond!

The Classic Game of Risk in mythical proportions. Armies and gods fight for domination of ancient Earth and the underworld.

Enter a time of myths and legends. Enter the world of Risk Godstorm, where ancient faiths and fears rule. Battle across the Earth and in the dark regions below. Harness spiritual forces to strike with devastating power. Command five ancient cultures -- Greek, Celtic, Babylonian, Norse, and Egyptian -- in a continent-spanning battle that will determine whose civilization reigns supreme. Rest assured, the gods will not sit idle in this war.

Risk Godstorm also includes everything needed to play the classic game of Risk on an Ancient Earth Gameboard.
"

would love to see a DBpro take on Risk

Isn't Wolfire one guy who does all the coding? He makes me feel so inadequate and lazy

Yep, one guy does the coding... The company is composed of 4 people:

David Rosen (CEO and lead programmer)
Jeffrey Rosen (president)
John Graham (COO)
Aubrey Serr (lead artist)

Made a start on this today. So far, progress is a (fairly simplistic) randomly generated hexagonal tiled 'board'. The size of the board, the number of landscape features and the size and shape of those features are all randomised.

I'm aiming to make a simple kind of Stratego inspired strategy game.

Here are a few boards I got out of it randomly:

@Blobby 101 Nice job! I'm planning on doing something hexagonal-based too.

Cheers, guys!
@thenerd, I had a bit of trouble with the maths of getting the hexagons to tile properly (as the width isn't the same as the length). I used the class from this blog post with a few changes in my project, but even if you're not using unity it may still help: http://www.redclovergames.com/blog/?p=305 Good luck!

Ok, I actually knocked something together for this one, though it is far from finished, it is somewhat playable.

It is the card game 500, using the 5 player variant that me and my wife tend to prefer and often play with friends. Makes the game much more dynamic than the static 4 player version.

More than anything it is really just a project meant to get my feet wet with C#, and so far I'm quite liking it. The code is probably a mess, almost certainly doesn't follow best practices, and definitely could be written better, but it is a start.

For now it is console based, but I will pop a shiny GUI on there once it is all functioning fully.

There are still some bugs, some missing user actions (trading from the kitty, AI will do it but nothing for you yet) and the complex logic for the Hard AI is incomplete, so it has to be played on Easy mode currently, though there will eventually be Easy, Hard, and Mixed modes.

There is also not yet any handling for a No Trump bid, so that has been removed from the schedule and you will have to stick to suit bids for now.

.exe and source file are attached

you can just run the exe and it will default to easy mode, with debugging turned off.

if you run it from cmd prompt, you can use the following switches:
debug:true (enables verbose output of game-state and AI logic)
mode:Easy (default)
mode:Hard (incomplete may stall or crash)
mode:Mixed (incomplete may stall or crash)
