Hey Guys,

I decided to take the plunge and install Windows 8.1 Preview as I already have Windows 8. I am unable to launch any programs created with AppGameKit, it simply crashes upon launching. This occurs for Tier 1 and Tier 2 as I have compiled and tried both. I know really no one is using Win 8.1 but I thought I would see if anyone else is having this issue or if its something screwy with my computer.

Thanks!

Well, there are enough problems with Windows 8 to start with.

So, I am not surprised that you have issues with Windows 8.1 and AGK.

What sort of hardware are you using? (Obviously, the OS is Windows 8.1.)

maybe its the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) ,
try a amd,nvidia driver?

possible it have not the correct opengl support.

(i had this problem with a build in card because my main
card was out of order and the default driver was WDDM)

Hi Ancient Lady, its a relatively new computer, custom built, AMD chip (AMD FX 6300), AMD Radeon HD 6700, 8 gigs of ram (64 bit), ssd hard drive.

It runs everything else I have smoothly, but immediately crashes with AppGameKit based apps. I did not try AppGameKit with normal Windows 8 which I had installed before I updated to the preview, so maybe it's just windows 8 in general.

I use my laptop for all of my programming which is Windows 7 Bootcamped so its not a huge deal, but I thought I would check.

Hi Markus,

I checked my drivers and everything is up to date.

Thanks for the input! Maybe its just Win8 itself.

The AMD Radeon HD 6700 (according to the AMD site) supports OpenGL 4.1, as part of its DirectX 11 Evolved technology (whatever that means).

So, in theory, it should work with all the OpenGL 2 commands.

Are you getting any messages at all on the AppGameKit apps? Or do they just disappear?

I think some of the Radeon lines have had issues with AppGameKit before (particles).

I get "Application.exe has stopped working" The window loads and has a title, but it crashes somewhere in the execution of everything. Same thing using Tier 1 and compiling in VS 2010 in Tier 2.

the first time i had win8 i had installed amd drivers but
the win8 os ignore them.
are you sure the device manager show drivers without wddm and the correct amd driver?

the most trouble i had with amd drivers was more dx games,
some did work, other not, some few drivers works with most of my games.

Sounds like a driver issue, maybe, or just plain Windows orneriness.

Until others try to use Windows 8.1 and AppGameKit, we won't know.

I have W8 on this laptop. I compiled a few of the AppGameKit Pascal example programs, and they all work fine. Smackit, for example - graphics, music, input - all fine.

edit: using Intel CPU and Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics

I had to format this evening and after much hesitation also decided to go with Windows 8.1 (previously Windows 7). I have the same "has stopped working" problem trying to run any AppGameKit application, be it compiled using AppGameKit Beta 16 or a previous EXE from a past project. Using the latest updates and official Nvidia Geforce / Creative audio drivers.

Here's the full crash log:

Guys - Never install pre-release operating systems unless you have a fall-back computer you don't need. AppGameKit works fine on W8.0, so let Microsoft sort their own bugs out!

As it's a preview version it may have restrictions on what it will permit to run - which is fair. I gather there have been 10 updates in the last two weeks!

W8 Works fine, I tried it in a VM yesterday. It's the new preview version, which is actually pretty nice that doesn't work. xCept, I am glad you can reproduce it, that means its not just my PC. I know it's never good to install on a production environment, so its just on my home desktop, my laptop keeps Win7 for now. Just thought it was a good idea for TGC to know incase something does need to change in AGK.

Thanks guys!

I ended up downgrading back to Windows 7 for now. Have Windows 8 on my Ultrabook which is fine, but won't be installing the 8.1 preview anytime soon.

Hi guys,

I had exactly the same issue as the OP and I tracked it down to a graphic driver issue.

I am on Windows 8, with an Intel HD4000 graphics card.

Originally I had the following HD4000 driver installed and AppGameKit worked perfectly:-

Version: 9.18.10.3165
date: 07/05/2013

I upgraded it using the Update Driver option within device manager, strangely it actually appeared to 'downgrade' it to:-

Version: 9.17.10.3062
date: 08/03/2013

While this fixed the issue causing me to update (the game 'Gone Home' would not work) it caused the exact issue above. I then rolled back the driver update, again directly in device manager and AppGameKit started working perfectly again.

So I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, but at least got to the bottom of the problem.

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks!
