I think with each generation there is always some new interest and its always labelled. Hippies, trekkies, bronies , geeks, ect,...
Its just a part of history. There will always be a new label out there because there is always going to be a new interest and people have an inherent need to label everything.

I've been following this game for a while and it's starting to look very cool. There's a pre-alpha build you can download on their website:

It's not at all unusual for older people to occationally watch childrens TV shows..
The only reason to why people are even talking about MLP is because it's a childrens show, aimed at girls - and guys are watching it.
