Someone's passed me this link, I thought it may be good for android dev, as its a tablet very cheap.

Take a look at the specs and see what you think, its £18 GBP.

http://dx.com/p/icoo-d70g1-7-capacitive-screen-android-4-1-dual-core-dual-sim-standby-3g-tablet-pc-white-245083

I am undecided if I should order or not, I know at least two people who have, so I'm confident its not a scam.

Opinions?

@Sparrowhawk

Thank you for the info and link.

Being a Leo, I took a risk and ordered one, came up as £17.55, I paid with PayPal.
It's being sent from China and will probably attract some VAT (but being so cheap it may not).

Lets see what happens.

Just noticed shipping is up to 21 days, and dispatch is up to 10... I hope these are faster than that!

I'm also ordering one.. After all if its cheap, and will always do as an xmas/birthday present for someone if nothing else!

Well it is 36 days until Christmas Eve, so it could well be a nice present.

I know that when I received my OUYA, the UK Customs label said that VAT was charged on any imported item over £15, and then there was the Royal Mail £8 handling charge on top.
It might well depend on what the CN22 Customs Declaration says on it.
However VAT on £18 is only £3.60 so the worst it can be is £11.60 to pay.

The dual 2G SIM slots intrigue me, it will be interesting to see if a UK SIM + DATA will work in it.

Yeah, all I know is its not 3g, thats as far as my knowledge on Sims go...haha

I hear theres this new thing called 4g around these days?

I got myself a free contract with t-mobile, and yes I mean FREE - :

Quote: "Thanks for placing an order with T-Mobile for the £8 SIM only pack.

There was an error on the shop which meant that your £8 SIM only was advertised as free each month. We will honour this mistake and your SIM will be with you shortly, we have had a lot of orders because of this error so please allow up to 7 days for delivery."

I wonder if that will work in it? WIll a 3g sim work in a 2g slot, just not do 3g? I have no idea...

Anyway, this week I've bagged myself a cheap tablet and a free contract, I just wish I bought those 2 bitcoins last month (at $185) as their value wend up to $740.. can't win them all..

The page has gone

I reckon in a small room somewhere theres a big argument over why they were that cheap, and if they'll cancel everyones orders. Quite a few people found out about the deal...

Was your payment refunded? Mine was, I think it was because I didn't verify my account - so I've sent payment a second time. Hope it works now!

I just got some tablets at work for £100 a pop, same resolution as an iPad, Android JB, and they seem to be pretty decent tablets for the price. The tablets are from Sumvision, the first lot of Voyager tablets, there is a Voyager2 being released.

Anyway, if I was looking for something cheap to develop with, I'd have a look at one of them - Personally I wouldn't spend less than that and still expect it to cope with AppGameKit stuff... Seriously every time I've gone for the cheaper option I've regretted it with this stuff.

My only advice is to make sure it's an official android product and has the play store.

I bought my son a cheapy tablet from amazon, and the supplied store app was a minefield of adverts for gambling/softcore porn.

That makes sense. I don't like to have to buy hardware - I bought an iPad 2 and iPod 5 for agk - the realised that apple had pulled the agk testing app from the App store.. Ouch.

These are selling on ebay at £65 and were (while still on the website reduced from about that). At £18 I feel I haven't really lost anything if it won't work for AppGameKit, it will make a good xmas present instead. If your interested, before the page was pulled, the specs were:

512MB RAM
4GB Built IN memory (Card slot for up to 32gb)
Dual Sim Slots (2G)
1.2Ghz Dual core CPU
1024 x 600 Screen.

Front and Back cameras are poor, 2.0mpx and 0.3MPX

=PRoF= - I didn't know there were unofficial android products, though I suppose I should have checked. Thanks for the heads up - I'll look into this a bit more, but I've already paid for it now.

Edit: The page is back, but out of stock.

I had assumed cheap was because of 'old/obsolete' tech, (2G and 4gb storage).

@Sparrowhawk

All seems good with my order (luckily I already had a verified PayPal account), I have just logged in again and the order status says 'Payment Confirmed'.

Fingers crossed.....

They cancelled my order without explanation this morning. Tried chat support (broken) left a support ticket...

I hope you get yours, I reckon they either realised they were too cheap and are trying to back out, or they had less in stock than orders. The friend who passed me the link, like me, passed it around a bit.

Similar thing happened with HP a while back, there was a discount code of £40 with no min spend, and a printer for £39.99. They received 10000 orders, and cancelled the lot :/ (Yes I tried that too... )

Jailbreaking is the key

Although I'm not sure if it's possible with the latest iProducts... I'm not an Apple user, so I don't know much about this sort of thing.

edit: incredibly hard to find reviews on this model! Not much about the brand either, they don't even seem to have a website!

Jailbreaking won't really help in the long run, you need a Mac and XCode to build iOS apps with AppGameKit - and really it's not a good idea to release something on the Apple store without being 100% sure what it runs on.

I guess I'm saying, try and make some money on the Google store, and use that to fund your iOS expenditure. Don't hit the Apple store cold, try and get some visibility on your app before releasing, like having a PC and Android version first, with youtube vids etc, then you stand more of a chance.

Publishing in iOS is not cheap. You need a Mac of some sort to start with and then pay for an Apple iOS Developer's License ($99USD/year for as long as you want your app in the App Store).

I know (now) that iOS publishing isn't cheap - although I have a Mac, the £60 (GBP) yearly fee seems extortionate. The reason why I'd prefer to develop for iOS is there are so fewer specs to worry about. With android there are so many different specs getting good performance on all of them is going t be tricky.

With iOS there are also only 3 creen ratios to worry about - iPad's are all the same, and the two ipod/iphone resolutions.

Android is such a mess in comparison.

But yes, the new plan is to focus on android - my issue is I cannot afford hardware - max budget is £50 which won't go far for an android device.

Apple isn't cheap either, but I did get an iPod 4th gen (8gb) for £10 (cost of a new screen).
