I don't think the UK invented any film genres. It's mostly France and the US. I'm no expert though...

We did invent the first Movie Projector and pioneered 3D but as for film genres I have no idea

Not quite... The UK has had a major influence on Fantasy such as the sword and sorcery genre and medieval. I think an example of its Fantasy can be seen in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Lord of the Rings. Reason is that England has been around during the middle ages and that is its western. I think it is still cool that you guys pioneered the movie projector. Hey you guys made some awesome stuff like Hot Fuzz and 28 weeks later.

I hope it isn't offensive... I'm just interested in talking and knowing each other's movie history...

Did Canada invent the "trailer park" genre?

I don't know Jeku. But Canada did popularize it with Ed Edd n Eddy and other things. Because the first film was set in Canada, I'd say yes.

Not sure that Lord of the Rings counts as from the UK as Peter Jackson is from New Zealand, also I don't think we invented the Genre. France seems to have created most of the early middle ages films too.

Perhaps Monty Python could count as having invented the "Alternative Historic Comedy" genre though...

I'm not putting the British Film industry down, I think we have produced some incredibly diverse and clever films over the years, glad you mentioned "Hot Fuzz" but I prefer "Shawn of the Dead" from Simon Pegg.

Ahhh... I knew it had to be somewhere from Europe. I thought France was popular with the Art Film genre.

That was filmed in New Zealand.

All three of the Cornetto trilogy were brilliant films!

Australia definitely invented a genre of film, but I'm not sure what to name it. Aussie and NZ films tend to be quite bizarre and indie-like.

Very very Australian not exactly sure if it counts as a Genre, but it fits the Aussie culture perfectly.

Now that I think about it I think Australia and England created the Post Apocalyptic/Dystopia genre. I could be wrong though.

Wow, looks like the UK may have actually made the first post apocalyptic film based on an H.G.Wells story: Things To Come in 1938...

...and here it is:

Not quite an original genre, but The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is popular film franchise originating from Sweden, with sequals expected in the future.

Back in the black and white days, Britain made some quite good films, Hammer Horror and Ealing Comedies for instance (if you like that sort of thing). But Britain is also responsible for the "carry on..." films:

One of my top 10.

Apparently France invented video porn, I'm not entirely surprised somehow.

I can't say if germany invented the horror genre but the movie "Nosferatu" sure puts them in my top spot. Still a very creepy movie til this day.

Here is something i just found about the earliest horror films........................................................................................

The horror genre has been frightening audiences for over 100 years. Most would say the first horror film ever made was "Le Manoir du Diable" or "The House of the Devil" which was filmed by Georges Melies of France in 1896. The film runs about 3 minutes and was completely silent. It is a mess of fun camera tricks including skeletons that appear out of then air and a bat that turns into a man. Not to mention a lot of stabbing people in the bottom with wooden pitchforks.

But what if I told you that the first horror film ever made and your light bulb have a lot in common? Sounds strange I know but ironically it is the strange and unusual that attract us to the genre in the first place.

In 1895 the first horror film was made by none other then American inventor Thomas Edison. Yes you heard right my friends-- the same guy who brought you such inventions as the practical light bulb, the phonograph, and the motion picture camera. His movie was titled "The Execution of Mary Stewart" I guess you could say it was based on a true story since it is the historical depiction of the execution of Mary Queen of Scots who was executed July 24, 1567 for treason.

Swiss I watched A Trip to the Moon. Loved that film.

Count that movie about no more birth and 1984 and Brazil.

Australia I think made the post apocalyptic film right with Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior.
