I finally made a couple of banners! Yay! I wanted to have the sun actually shining through the letter of TGC in the second one, but after an hour of guessing I failed to achieve that specific effect. Nonetheless, I'm pretty pleased with how both of these turned out

Now it's definitely time for bed! ZZZZZzzzzzz.....

I made "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crepuscular_rays" on your image (as overlay), but they are almost invisible as your background is too bright, so don't be upset With this image you just can't.

I'm not sure if this is possible, but if we could make it so that the GIF loops only one time, then stays still, that would be awesome. I personally find that animated GIF website banners are really unprofessional. Ultimately, it's up to the site admins.

When I wrote the rule that requested that all banners be in the jpg format, I was copying the rules from the previous contest; I presume there is a reason that TGC requested the banners to be in the jpg format, so I sort of doubt they would allow GIFs anyway.

I want to make a few more submissions, but I'm not quite creative enough. I'll have to try to get my brain to switch sides so I can come up with funny stuff...

This has to be part of the animation data but should be controllable externally maybe, as Flash can be controlled in this way if i remember it correctly...

Here is an example...

Infinite Loop

Three Loops

One Loop

No Loop [Plays Once and stops]

GTG but hope this explains it

EDIT

For some reason It has to loop once at minimum lol, weird... had it working with 0 loops and then it failed... oh well...

Try and stay on topic, folks.

So this thread's activity seems to be decreasing a little bit, so I think it may be time to begin figuring out what banners will go on to be used on the website.

Does anyone have any ideas how this should be done? Maybe a vote would be good? We could have a system where each person nominates their favorite 30 banners, or something.

Let's decide! If people want to link to old banners and state whether they would like to keep or remove said banner, we could get a good idea of what people want as far as that goes.

I think votes on existing banners should be made...

Also just adding these two to round off my submission total...

#29

#30

#30 is just for a reminder of a good joke

Been so busy lately...

EDIT

Woops no idea how they got switched around...

Should I start a new thread strictly for the voting process? I have a feeling that things would get a little messy if we tried to put that in this thread. Of course, I also don't want to create an uneeded thread. The voting thread would be strictly for voting only and would not go off topic.

Are you asking for a vote about how the votes should be done?

Perhaps debate the structure of the voting process here prior...

Like each can vote their choices from 1 being most liked to whatever the top number total or limit will be...

Someone can either scour the thread then for results and insert them to a tally chart to show the end results... and the top so and so number get selected, including duplicate results per number so say 30 was the limit of choices to be approved, the top 30 might include a few say 3 par results so 1 might have 1 result, 2 might have 3 results meaning all three of 2nd place would be included giving 32 images to the submission...
Or a poll site can be used for the result but I think the age old proven method of a vote thread that gets locked for tallying works best...

Or whatever, just a thought...

The problem for me is that videos use up my download limit and makes me scream at the website creators for not letting me CHOOSE to play the video. I immediately close any website that autoplays videos. I was very glad for Chrome's little sound-playing symbol that appears on tabs generating audio. So useful.

Quote: "Visual representation of autoplay:"

loool exactly I'm stealing that gif

Quote: "Are we planning on keeping the old banners too?"

I certainly hope so! Maybe we could drop #5 and #42, but the rest of the current ones are all good.

Quote: "Nice banners, Clonkex!"

Thanks!

Hmm.... voting for our favourite banners could be difficult... WHAT ABOUT THIS:

Each of us gets, say, 50 points. We can use those 50 points to vote. Say we really like #26, we might give it 15 points and the rest of the ones we like 5 points. That kind of thing. I think it would work really well. Then again I may not have thought it through fully. ACTUALLY it just occurred to me that to decide on a number of points to get for the vote you just use the number of entries.

And yes, I definitely think there should be a second thread for the voting. When you decide to finish the comp, give us a week before the deadline (or however long you think - it's your comp ).

Input taken on the potential voting methods. I have an idea, and I think I will carry it out, unless people oppose to it.

To start, there shall indeed be a new thread made for the sake of voting. That thread will be strictly for voting, and no off topic discussion should occur there. That just keeps things organized. Next, I predict that the majority of the submissions (disregarding variations of the same banner) will make it into banner circulation; there are lots of really great ones. Thus, I believe that it would be ideal for me to post a thread in which votes count against banners. Any banners that get a significant number of opposing votes shall not make it into circulation, and banners that receive a minimal or non number of opposing votes will be submitted to the site administration, for entry into circulation.

After that occurs, we will know what new banners we are working with. At that point, it would make sense to vote as to which currently existing banners shall remain in circulation. That vote should take place in the same thread, and in a similar manner. I am thinking for that vote, votes will be cast towards keeping a banner in circulation, as opposed to removing it from circulation. I propose that idea as I anticipate a large portion of the current banners being removed from circulation. However, that depends on how many banners TGC wants to be in circulation. If TGC doesn't mind having over a hundred banners in circulation, then maybe most of the current ones will remain. We'll see.

So yeah, that's my idea for now. If anyone opposes, please let me know.

Quote: "When you decide to finish the comp, give us a week before the deadline (or however long you think - it's your comp)"
Haha, this isn't my competition! It's the forum's competition; I am just taking the initiative in administering the competition. So since you really want me to, I shall set the deadline for this competition to occur three days from the date of this post. The voting thread shall start on that day. If anyone wishes for this deadline to be changed, let me know.

I was thinking about that, but I can't see it makes much difference whether they have 5 banners or 500. The banner choosing code is almost certainly just str(rnd(1,55))+".jpg", so it won't slow down the server, and I can't imagine TGC is running out of HDD space from banners. Assuming an average (and bigger-than-most) size of 50KB per banner, even with 5000 banners that's only ~244MB (and ~24MB with 500 banners).

Quote: "Any banners that get a significant number of opposing votes shall not make it into circulation, and banners that receive a minimal or non number of opposing votes will be submitted to the site administration, for entry into circulation."

Hmm... the only problem with that (and the problem I attempted to avoid with my idea but now see I didn't) is, who decides what the threshold is? Do we all vote on a threshold after we've seen the votes, or do we just hope there'll be a distinct separation between banners that'll go into circulation and banners that won't?

Quote: "I anticipate a large portion of the current banners being removed from circulation"

I hope not, I like the current banners (except for a couple of them).

Let's figure it out now! So say any banner with 5 or more opposing votes does not go on? That number is just an example; I am sure there is a better number.
