If you try hard enough, you can get drunk on anything.

You can drink quite young in Europe, right? It's 18 in Australia but most people start drinking earlier :p

It depends on the country. I think it's 16 in germany, in sweden it's 18 to drink at bars/clubs and 20 to buy alcohol

As far as I can tell, I think its generally 16 for soft stuff (beer and wine) and 18 for hard liquor. Not sure if thats an EU norm but it has been like this in all the european countries I've visited at that age. Now I don't pay attention anymore so I can't tell.

Actually, in UK you can drink from the age of 5 if drinking at home! Private house parties, kids can drink no problem. No joke.

Got any link/reference for that? Sounds outlandish for an EU country.
Not saying you are lying, just want to read how thats a thing!

I believe here in the US, it is legal for one's parents to give them alcohol as young as the age of 4. That may vary state to state, and I also have no link to prove that. I think I heard it from a teacher once before.

That's an exception rather than the norm. See: http://criminal.findlaw.com/criminal-charges/contributing-to-the-delinquency-of-a-minor.html

Sure. A quick Google search will give you the details you need, but there is a charity called Drink-Aware in the UK who explain it all quite nicely in one place here:

What about the 17 year olds?

Not really - it's the parent's choice.

In the USA, when I was growing toward 21 the drinking age was 21. But as soon as I turned 21 it was lowered to 18! Same with the voting age. The lowering of both was provoked by the fact that the "draft" (military conscription) was in effect then, to supply troops for what was called the Vietnam War, and the nation felt that if an 18 year old guy could be compelled to go to war it would be a nice gesture that he be entitled to vote and have a beer before boarding the troop transport plane to take him half way around the world to fight. After the war ended and the draft was abolished, drinking ages slowly escalated back up to 21. (The voting age did not.)
