This is a 'proof of concept' game I have written for the College where I work to demonstrate the use of VERY affordable Virtual Reality - and have a bit of fun! It may lead to some interesting educational VR apps in the near future.

Use a Google Cardboard headset (from around £3 from Amazon or eBay) with your iPhone or Android phone and you have yourself an immersive virtual reality shooting range. I have specifically written it so that you don't need to touch the screen once you have started the game. It requires no buttons or controls - other than moving your head around.

NOTE: Your device must have a built-in gyro to work with Google Cardboard. iPhones and most mid-range or better Android phones and tablets will be fine. iPads work (but probably won't fit in your Google Cardboard headset) and a 4th generation iPod Touch or above should be good. It's free so if in doubt, give it a try!

Cool! Fantastic idea.

Just installed it, but it really suffers from the x-rotation shimmy (quickly tilt your head up or down, and the view will get an unwanted sideways (y-rotation) movement). - Something to do with the Coriolis effect I think.

We could really do with some proper sensor-fusion output for motion sensing built into AppGameKit, rather than just access to the sensors.

See:

At around 17:05 he talks about these weird spikes in the accelerometer data (which is what I'm seeing in your app), and how to compensate that with the gyroscope data to smooth it out.
Quote: "sensor fusion algorithms must be used in order to create responsive, accurate, and low noise descriptions of motion."

I finally got around to trying it. I couldn't get the image to blend into one, I could always see 2 targets . I have the standard Google Cardboard design and tried with and without glasses.

Thanks for trying it out.

BatVink - I tried it on Android phones and iPhones with three different Google Cardboard headsets (a fixed lens plastic one, an adjustable lens plastic one, and one original cardboard headset) and it worked in all configurations. I had several other people try it out too and they had no trouble focusing and playing. The 3D is setup so that the cross hair should appear just in front of your face with the background a long distance away. I can't think of anything obvious why it wouldn't work for you.

Luckily you don't need to be too accurate as it allows for the spread of the shotgun pellets so focussing on the cross hair isn't essential as long as you get the clay near the centre of the display.

It was due to be demonstrated at the Staffordshire County Show last week too. Looks like they had 70000+ visitors this year!
