Hello guyz. I'm glad to present here my current project: SteamWorld (the name is not definitive, but it will )

The game is something in between an RTS and RPG, you can build structures, defense, etc. but is a single player gameplay (PvE) with quests and a main story mode.

Here is some screens and a video, hope you enjoy!

DBPro, by a single man (code, graphic, models, everything) in a couple of months.
With the help of the Forum, sometimes (a lot of times to be honest )

Thx!
No, i'm using DBPro nearly vanilla i wrote my own particle system cuz of special feature that is not implemented in the packs.

Actually i'm not working so much on the graphic side, i'm still editing the world (that is sooo huge)

Thx , this is the second day of test: all the clouds are moving, volumetrics (and a nice kind of ground fog is coming).
I'm a lit proud cuz i did it alone, w/o dark clouds or other stuff (i simply didn't bought it, i dunno if can be easier/better)

How i did it?

1) photoshop brushes (you can find free steam, vapor & clouds easily)
2) create a texture from brush, adjusting alpha, transparency, fading to zero the bottom part of the cloud
3) repeat for 4/5 different clouds (merging various parts)
4) using planes, position your clouds on the planet surface according to the curvature

5) (THIS is the REAL point) become CRAZY tryng to find the proper TRANSPARENCY mode to fit your clouds w/o loose particle effect, get glitches or strange transparency adding problem.

if oyu are good enough with graphics and coding the points from 1 to 4 are easy..

the 5th is a PAIN!

Thanks for sharing your technique. I had something similar in mind, but with particle systems; but you are using planes. I have been playing around with shaders to animate the transparency of the clouds as they move buy scrolling the UV coordinates and vertex positions.

What's your FPS at the moment?

in my experience, with smoke, clouds and similar stuff the rule is:

"less is more"

the quality of the texture, often, is more important than the technique.
a slow growing (in dimensions) of a couple of nice painted plains can be really effective (like bomb smoke in call of duty)

i'm workin on a Lenovo workstation with 2 CPU (8 cores each) and 2 nVidia GTX750Ti SLi.. so FPS are simply too much.

i tested on a "human" pc and i am always over 50 fps, but i can assure you the code is long and complicated

Ciao Luca!
E buona fortuna!
