Does anyone have a DBPro program that can turn a photo into a .X model?

I have a project to turn photos into 3D models that I'll send to my 3D printer but I'm having a hard time finding a good program for that.

That sounds very like something that Scraggle was playing with a few years ago. In his case he was using some software which turned photos of your head into a model of your head. Perhaps the software concerned has progressed beyond that? A search on Scraggle's threads should reveal the name.

Edit Here's the link:

Actually I have my doubts about how such a program would work for a general object, e.g. where would it get its position or depth information from?

Edit2 Hmm? According to this link such things might be possible - but the discussion on youtube suggests it might be fake. Watch this space.

The programs I've seen use the color info to set the heightmap and make a model of that like a terrain. Then enclose it so it's a solid 3D model for 3D printing.

I went ahead and bought one that does an ok job, but I think the concept can be improved upon.

Perhaps just using the heightmap to make an Advanced Terrain and just save that off as a model. You'd still have to convert it to OBJ then load it in something like Sketchup that can export it to STL, but if the end result is better then it would be worth it.

It would have to be a pretty high polycount terrain though to catch all of the detail.

I know you said "a photo" implying singular, but there is a piece of free software called 123D catch that works pretty good with multiple pictures of the object taken from different angles. It even textures the object with the photos and uses Autodesk's servers to do all of the image to model conversion processing and keeps the load off your computer.
