Un-named Alienware Competition Entry

It's only 16 days until the final Alienware Competition deadline, so I thought I would show-off some screen-shots of my competition entry, and another small reason is that I need a name for it, any ideas?

Basically it’s a racing game, and the story goes something like this: Five aliens have escaped from Area 51 and are on the run through Nevada desert in the most advanced military ATV’s.

Races take place over 3 detailed levels (8000+ polygons with high res. textures). There are three modes to choose from (grand prix, time trial, and multiplayer), all the usual options (keyboard, joystick, screen resolution, graphic detail), and more (in game power-ups, CD player, motion-blur, and lots of hidden 'Easter eggs'). The overall style of the game is most like 'Mario Kart'.

I’m planning to have a demo ready by next Sunday, and i'll probably put some more screenshots up later.

Damn.. That looks very impressive.. I cant wait to play all these alienware entries, though this looks like it has a great chance! As for some names:

- Area 51, the great escape
- Outerplanet Fugitives
- Area 51: Project Nevada Safezone

Ok ok.. the're kinda lame

@oliver

Top stuff! - looking forward to playing this one

I suggest that you don't use Area51 in the title as rival project Roswell Racer is going to feature a track with that name.

Names:

ET. Escape? (Extra-Terrestrial Escape)

It's strange to see another game like Froggerman's and Esc's. Similar graphics, similar scenario, obviously you both have to use the alien. I suppose you both had to use the dessert too, being as both are set in the nevada dessert. Driving games are great fun, and I can't wait to try them out!

Thanks!

@ schoenhs

@ TheAbomb12
The levels where made in a modeling program, and textured in microsoft Word

@Rob K
Thanks

@ Pincho
Yeah, It does sort of look similar to Froggerman's and Esc's game, though I been developing this for almost a year now, and one of the levels has always been set in the desert. Recently I had to re-textured all the levels to using the same desert textures because of the file-size limit to enter the competition.

Quite simple really, Microsoft Word has the sweetest 'Replace' function (meaning you can replace spaces with paragraphs, or delete decimal places, flip the order of numbers...). So basically I built some functions which do just that, which is easy if you save to the model to a simple file format. This method is just like the automatic UV mapping in a program like Valve Hammer Editor.

After the competition, i'll give out all the functions I made for adjusting the UV's in .mqo files.

I also use this method to fix-up levels. Meaning I model a rough level, paste it into Word and it does all these things like setting the points to a grid.

It's seriously cool

@Raven
Hmm, I like that name, but did you mean Nevada ATV? I think I might use that, sounds cool, Thanks!

Heres a screenshot with the Motion-blur option turned on. On my PC (1.7 Ghz pentium 4) it still runs at 50fps.

Lookin good so far. keep it up.

btw, some comments:

could use extra detail ie. rocks, skeletons, and maybe you could "weather down" the road texture, add cracks and whatnot.

also, the hills look notoriously round... it doesn't feel right.

Anyway, it looks great, even at this stage of development. May I ask how you did the shadows? I'm DBC, so I wanna know if those shadows are a "dbpro thang"

@ r_kabouter
Thanks for the comments. Yeah, rocks and skeletons could add a nice feel to the game, though take time to model. Personaly I like the round hills, sort of cartoonish, likewise with the texture.

"...even at this stage of development."
Uhhmm, not sure what you mean, I only have 15 more days, and I'm at school till 6:00 each day, lol.

The shadows are just ghosted plains, if I remember correctly Van, or was it the Masked Coder (sorry I can't remember) made a code which wrapped a mesh to the ground, perfect for doing shadows, respect man .

Any more comments please?

I am also looking for someone to create perhaps one music track for the game.

ATV, All Terrain Vehicle
ETV, Extra Terrestrial Vehicle ^_^

was ment to be a play on words, hehee
but cool either way.
looks very close to Roswell Racer, so should be interesting. Have a feeling if it is between these two it'll be the gameplay that counts. So would be the area to really consentrate upon

Nice idea for the name, what do you think to any of these variations-

ETV Challenge
ETV Rallye
ETV Racer
ETV Run
ETV Escape
ETV Flight
ETV Breach
ETV Pursuit
ETV Offroad

Yeah, I think the gameplay is quite fun, the car physics is cool, I just have to add free-flight rotational stuff.

Seriously impressive stuff, but we've only seen screenies the real test is the gameplay.
not so sure on the motion blur, kinda like playing when drunk, don't drink and drive kids!
good luck to ya.

OK.

Well now this is just getting silly. How are us mortals meant to win this competition?

Anyone want to join me in praying that Rich hates racing games?

As I understand it, part of the judging is based on "appropriate" use of the alien model. If you can come up with a more original way to use the alien than a racing game you might still stand a chance to be in the top 10.

Looks seriously cool! I can't wait to play these games!

I agree, the motionblur is sort of strange, but is alot cooler when moving, and it took along time to make, so I might as well leave it in there. Anyway, you can switch it on or off (just like the one in Need for Speed underground), suit yourself .

@Oliver - I'll write you a track if you want. I have my last paper due on Tuesday but after that I'll work on it if you want. My stuff sounds electronic--- some of it heavy, some easy-listening. I don't sing. Anyways, let me know if you want to hear some samples.

Looks cool!

I can't really say which one I prefer the looks off, your game looks a bit more arcadey, but less detail - however your game will no doubt have more levels than Frog and Esc's.

I reckon Rich will go for playability too, it's the one field where we all have an equal footing. My entry is set (start's off) in the desert, for some reason I was thinking Arizona, but if everyones in Nevada, I suppose I should start my game there, continuity and all that.

Well more realistically about four months, I was just proving a point that I had designed the game way before seeing screenshots of R!*?@$l Racer . And at the beginning progress was very slow (setting up collision and the basic frustrating stuff).

I recon they'll lose a load of points for only having one track.

How come you can just drive straight of the track, Oliver?
Is it really a racing game or just a drive-around-taking-down-the-whole-US-army game?

Yeah, the forum without a compo is like the mall from 'Dawn of the Dead' - lots of zombies wandering about aimlessly, banging into each other and dribbling on their shirts. Then a compo comes along and it seems to wake us all up - we grumble for a bit then get to work.

The worst thing about compos is that your half hoping the screenies in showcase posts look crud, I can't remember seeing a bad screenshot this time though.

but it is like the mall if the zombie mass see some one how is alive and working thay attack say "do`s it have play ablety" and/or "brains" hopeing that the game will olny look good and play like a brink. but we do`t now and will not now un-till the compos end and the game get put out on this web site or thay put out demo.

too right but yeah most look pretty amazing, much better than on previous competitions. however it's very difficult to see any entry which you can say "thats definitely going to come in the top three" or whatever, becuase there's so many good entries, and entries people haven't posted about yet.
