Hi was wondering do i have to use visual studio for this or can i use another IDE and if so which one. Been trying to get visual studio 2017 working without success. followed all the instructions in the agk tier 2 help .

u need setup vs 2017 for c++ developing and in the depth of steam folders there are a vs 2017 64 bit example solution / project with name template. try this and then copy it so a save place (because agk updates via steam)
ms called a collection of one ore more projects a solution.

Just tried it again and just can't get it to work. I'm using visual studio 2017 the community edition . under all the bit's that say agk it has a red line under it and it says agk is not a valid name space.

By default the community edition does NOT install the C++ libraries and tools. You need to make sure that these are correctly installed first.
Once you do this, all you should need to do is open the correct solution file for the version of visual studio you are running.

i have much more installed but maybe you can compare.

You might have to manually link the C++ libraries and tools. Guide.
