Hey guys,

since MP3 technology became substantially patent-free on 16 April 2017 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3, which format am I supposed to use for music tracks for my games ( Android, IOS and Windows )?
MP3 only, OGG only, or mixed depending on the platform?

Thanks!

I believe ogg is more universally compatible, and the preference moving forward. Mp3 was disabled for a while, but they added it back in. Not sure there's a massive difference of most platforms.

This article talks about the end of the mp3 licensing, but because of Fraunhofer, I'm not entirely sure mp3 is licence-free or not. It's confusing.

I think mp3 is the most compatible format in the world. I tried to switch to OGG a decade ago but no devices supported it. I'm sure its better now, but I still don't think iphones can play ogg.

Haven't we had trouble looping mp3 music? and .ogg doesn't have this trouble?

That I don't know, but now that you mention it it does ring a bell.
