Two issues;
1) It appears that the character controller will create 2 "phantom" objects that will be returned when using the ObjectRayCast() function. This is not the case when using the physics ray casting.
2) The character controller would tunnel when attempting to navigate a steep slope

The attached example addresses both these issues. Thanks to soup for the base code and nachoz for help
