ESC and I just put the finishing touches on Roswell Racer. It came out pretty well. There are alot of little graphical updates since the last screens. As usual alot of things didnt make it into the game in time. Multiplayer had to be cut and some of the gameplay isn't as polished as we would like. But I guess thats what working under a deadline is about. Anyway, you can download it here:
http://www.shellshockede.com/Roswell_Racer_3f7833d77952d.rar

I reccomend you set your desktop resolution to 1024x768 with 32bit color before playing. Can fix some blurriness that fullscreen windowed mode can create. If it doest run well just turn particles off

[Potential Spoilers]

Wow! Says it in one word I suppose.

Bugs: Hardly any that were major. Just at the beginning of the race my car slides a little to the left. This game is sharp otherwise.

Collision: Very Accurate

Level Design: Love it.(except that darn drop-off in the night level )

Graphics: The most crisp game in my opionion

Sound: Great!

Overall: You know it, I know it, your hardwork has paid off, and you'll get what you deserved(). These games are being judged on gameplay and this has plenty of it. It's clean, it's challenging enough, and I had fun with it.

Nice work, and well done. This game is gonna be the talk.

Awsome game, i think we have a winner :-P
Cant wait to see what everyone else got

Oh i found a bug, if you move the arrows before the game starts your car starts off on the side, so your controling it before it starts.
[Edited} Oh wait it only happens after you play one game already.

Does the noise in my head bother you?

I got some strange buggs?
after the game ends it dont care if you loose or win if you hgold the speed button so will the kart run thru, walls, hills and ground making it look strange?
When i won the second map so did i yust turn before the computer takes over the steering control.
and starngely so do i not know if it was the reason but when the boss stage started so was my car placed on the side of the road facing the boss.
and when i was driving so did i fall in to the large canyon and the computer placed me so that i falled down a couple of times untill i was placed on the road.
it placed me on the edge so that i falled down.
but anyway really great i played it alot well done.
please make some more tracks it was really fun.

I'd just unlocked the second level, when I tried to load it, at the end of the loading sequence I got an "Object does not exist on line 32xx" error (If I get it again I'll note down the exact line no.)

After what this rar put me through for the past hour (involving two manual shutdowns, 1 reboots, and 2 freezes) this had better be really really good!

I'll edit after I play it.

[Edit]

Ok, heres how it went:

The game was playable on my computer with all graphic settings on, but only ran smooth with particles and reflections off.

Graphics: Best graphics I've seen in a Dark Basic Pro game yet.

Playability: Its fun, and easy to control. Problem is, I seemed to keep skidding to the right no matter what, and I happened to start off of the track during the second try, shown in the pic below:

Music and Sound Effects: I'm guessing there is only one song, right? Only one .ogg other than the menu music. Well, anyway, the music is catchy, but I think it would have been a bit better with some techno, or bass and drum, but I'm guessing that would ruin the whole theme. As for the sound effects, they're pretty good, fit well.

Bugs: I wanna say the skidding sideways part, and starting off the track part, and there is another bug I'd like to mention. At key points in the first level (at the bridge and right before the hairpin turn) some racers just seem to race around a single point, and dont bother with the race. I know they didnt win, because then I would have been less than 3rd at the time.

Overall: It's pretty good, very good if you ask me. Should win you that computer (but I'm not entirely sure, havent played any of the other entries). But, its not enough to calm me down after what that cursed rar did!

Cheers,
Preston

I thought the clock(time) power up was pretty sweet. In fact, all the power-ups were accurate and worked fine for me.

Nice game - very smooth. Only had 1 crash when starting level 3 after finishing level 1 and 2. Can't load bitmap at line xx (45 or 55 I think). Restarted game and all was ok.

Don't like end of level when you win or lose. Just hangs around forcing you to escape to menu. You can still accelerate though which causes all sorts of confusion. A couple of times could accelerate off the track and off the level into no-mans land.

When you fall off cliff you restart in strange places and not always pointing in right direction.

Other than that I like this game a lot.

Cool game, but the first time I started the second level it started me halfway around the track facing into a barrier. Looking at the posts above there seems to be a problem with this. Same problem with the game resetting me above the canyon. Other than that this game is the best game graphically that I have played made in DBPro.

Do you bite your thumb at me sir?

Okay, heres a fix for some of those collision issues you guys have been having. This is all I can do as I'm not the coder. Its a new collision.X mesh. I know it past the deadline but this should fix some of the more minor bugs for you guys. However this wont solve collision in-accuracies. Just drop this in the models directory (may be hidden)

Not a bad game at all but my grievances lie within the gameplay department. The collision with the sides of the track is quite abrupt and harsh. You should be able to go into the sand but naturally thre carts should go slower, kick up more dust, spin out easier, etc. I just found this collision with the sides to be frustrating. Oh and that sharp curve on the first map with the ravine all around, that one was murderous >

Speaking of files so far all the alienware entries I've played came in rar or zip with tons of files- why am I the only one with a zip with one file- the executable?

The other folders and files are hidden. You must be one of the few people who don't have hidden files visible.
Turn it on in folder options.

I didn't really get along with the gameplay, it's graphically very good and hopfully development will contiue to work out the ai bugs greatly improve the gameplay.

Uh, my invisible files are visible. My game only makes an executable file, I have media included in it. Was just wondering why no one else seems to do it this way.

might just be my laptop being a good ghz slower than the slowest test system ... but i've come across some amusing bugs

first one is just classic, the Ai players get stuck. or rather not so much stuck; more they just stop at somepoint and drive in circles for no apparent reason. (the only reason i won Race 1 was cause at one point there were all doing it right before that casam bend.

secondly whenever it steered too quickly into a bend, the car would turn... and the alien dude would like slide out the side hehee,
had one bend i was going full speed and was turning as fast as i could and the lil dude was like 10ft to the left of the car still doing all his driving movements hehee

i'm not so sure about the gameplay either, as it seems like i was driving on ice all the time. i mean the only way i could get around the casam bend was to basically turn until i was facing the rock then turn back around whilst driving forward.

the game seemed to be running at a nice stead fps though, dunno how fact but was smooth ^_^

apart from that not too many quibbles, looks nice; just not so fussed on the gameplay.

Generally a very good game . Nice crisp graphics, good lap design, nice automap.

The collision, however, was poor. You can run right through enemies, and vice versa. You can get stuck on ledges going up-down-up-down. The 'hopping' element to remove skid is clever, but a bit clunkily implemented.

The power-ups are very neat, but the racer is so fact paced that you rarely get to use any but the speed powerups, and generally your enemies just crash themselves with bombs!

However altogether still an enjoyable expirience . Good job.

Great game, but I found a bug ... I sank into the yellow sand at the side of the road (but I came back and continued the race)

It was really buggy for me. I got the same as Raven:

It was worse than that sometimes.

Presentation - Unbeatable
Gameplay - Pretty damn good

In short, Top Three or Rich is allergic to racing games.

If you look on Batvink's screenshot you will see on the map that the green dot is way off the map outside the skydome. As backdrop is turned off you get all those weird trails and colours. This bug happens quite a lot, specially when you win or lose a game but kart carries on playing.

Many of these problems are because of the syncing system we are using. If anyone is having sever troubles try turning things like particles off.

Okay, it looks great, but on my machine it was just unplayable. All the other drivers were flying and going all over the place. At one point they all started circling my car. I couldn't control the car it just swerved all over the place without me touching a button...but its prolly just my computer.

It was ridicualously buggy for me.

Enemy cars would :

- drive through me/each other
- drive round in circles
- disappear
- jump 10 metres in the air

My car would :

- start in weird places (2 metres in the air over the sand ?!)
- start facing in strange directions
- steer right the whole time
- get replaced in the pit if I fell in there
- get replaced looking the wrong way
- split with the player

The camera would:

- go through the rock at the beginning
- leave me behind
- go mad and shoot back and forth really fast

Just too buggy. That was with all the settings off.
I hope Rich doesn't play it like me after all the effort you put in.

@Froggermon

The graphics in this game are simply top notch! If you persue it, you should have a long and successful career in modeling!

@ESC

Very impressive programming. Multiple menus, AI, and special effects - extremely impressive!

And Leif did a simply fantastic job on the music. It never gets old, and it is very game appropriate.

This is the kind of game to show people who say, "What can DarkBASIC do?" This would impress any critic.

If this is what you can do under a 4 month deadline, I can just imagine what you could create if you all were working full time on a game for a year or so!!!

I do my games the same way - one zip with one exe file. It works pretty well I must say! I used Winzip in my entry, and the file was 13 megs. With WinRar, it would have been 9, but oh well.

The only problem with that technique is that winrar can't compress the files nearly as well.

Hmmm... I can see your point. If the files are separated, WinRar can compress each file differently, to the best of its ability.

You did the models in 3DStudio Max, right? What about the text for the menu's? Was that done in Max as well? It was all very well done!!!

Max5 for models, photoshop 7 for textures and menus.

I was trying to re-produce some of those bugs you guys were talking about and I cant for alot of them. I was running it on an old machine at work at about 6 FPS and still few bugs. Ofcourse it was hard to tell and I almost got a seizure.

So far the bugs I have been able to find are:

First speed pad in roswell day hooks you right
AI racers move in a choppy manner
Sometimes jumping and turning will cause you to spin rapidly

If anyone can describe in more detail how there bugs occured it would help.

Oh and exact machine specifications would help too. If you don't know use CPU-Z to find out. As detailed as possible please.
