i have made a generic control system for fps games, this relies entirely on there being a collision system which i why i used a bsp map: (it includes mouse look, forward, backward, strafe left/righ and "real" gravity and jump functions)

the camera tilts upwards slightly on all of the movements forwards, backwards, strafe left/righ to allow it to go up stairs or slopes, the gravity pulls the camera back to the ground in the same loop.

to control looking up and down (linited to 69o in both dirctions:
