Ive just had an idea. I can create custom explosion FX that look very realistic (see my Freeform Space game in action for proof, or if you like I could upload a render).

Would anybody be interested if I said I could create custom explosions to order, of any size and file format?

Would anybody be interested in purchasing things like this to improve the look of the special FX in their games?

Well I was thinking of perhaps $5 for an explosion pack, perhaps having 3 different explosions in it at various sizes (64x64, 128x128, 256x256) in bitmap frames, PNG frames (with transparancy), an AVI file and an animated GIF file. What do you think?

Oh one other thing, I could make them 100 frame animations, so if you need a 10fps animation, you could just use every tenth frame, etc.

I'm sure they would be pretty useful.

How about 3D ones too ?

To create a 3D explosion you map the textures onto a 3D object and turn it transparant. However, I could create renders of the texture from all sides if desired, so it could be mapped accurately for a true 3D effect.

Thats not the way it is done in most games though. Most games simply map an animation to some planes.

I've seen paying for randomly generated levels bevore, but never paying for explosions

I think the idea would be good, but inly for free. A lot of us only do this as a hobby and can't afford to be paying all the time.

I love Star Trek.
Especially the Episodes with Starships in.

The only people that are paid for explosions are the American army and terrorists  . I can digitize a explosion from TV and use it in a game, but paying for them? No, thanks.

I would probably use my digibuy account, they accept credit card transactions both online and on the phone, and also cheques too.

Seeing as a few people are interested, and the FX will be much better than digitising them from films (lol!) - I can render them straight out with 100% accurate transparancy (think fading alpha channels, so that bits of the explosion image have different transparancy levels), I shall get some done and let you know as you soon as its possible to take orders!

If you offer to help create explosion PLUS providing codes to use in DB/DBP, you stand a better chance of increasing your sales.

That means, instead of selling ready made ones, offer services to create explosion packs for consumers.

Is this a one time sale of the explosion?
Or a non-exclusive license?

Make a set of explosions and functions for them all in 1 #include file complete with media.

like:

function MakeExplosion(type,x,y,z, Size)

then for the main loop

HandleExplosions()

I'd buy that for 5 bucks.

Forgive me for stating the obvious, but that just looks like the combustion plugin from 3D Studio Max, which has never once been able to produce a passable explosion, even for a game.

While its probably a nice effect once you see it animated and on an expanding, ghosted plain, after lookin at your pic I'm afraid I have to agree - nobody would pay for that. Keep working on it though, its a good start, but start from scratch no pre built plug-in pls. Don't be lazy and you'll get a better result. Personally I think the explosion files that came with the 3dgamemaker are pretty cool - shame they're not royalty free - Maybe they could be part of Dark Matter 2??? EH DBTeam? (Hint hint)

P.S. Many people have said it before, but if u don't already have it DON'T buy 3dgamemaker - Its cack. I got it as part of a shop deal with Dark Basic and Dark Matter, and while its a distraction for 5 mins, its damned near useless. It contains some nice models and textures, but none of the are royalty free! BOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooo! :-(

you never complained about the explosions in Freeform Space, rapscalLion... and thats one of the frames....

Gardocki, you are correct in identifying that. If you cant get Max to render passable explosions, then you should keep playing around with it until it does, hehe

Kingius is right. You can create excellent explosions with 3dsmax. You just need to know how.

OK but I agree that the explosion-picture with the combustion plugin he produced isn't that perfect
(but animated it looks better I know)

But everyone complaining about it should do it better

Stick to 3dsmax, improve your skills and it will rock

I'm also considering selling effects textures including explosions. I'm starting a computer graphics company and will be putting up a website very soon. If there's enough interest, I may begin making graphics packages for Dark Basic. You can get a sample explosion from

http://micropoint.topcities.com/explosiontest.avi

Tell me what you think.

P.S. If anyone wants to use it in a game that's fine, it's freeware.

I'll correct my statement that combustion can't do explosions. It can me made to do very nice effects, but alone it has limited capacity. The problem with combustion is not necessarily that can't do explosions, but that they are always recognizably fake. With a little tweaking, they can be helpful in creating the effect, but alone they don't do a very good job of it. See my above post for an example of this. I used three spherical atmospheric apparati, 2 particle systems, glow and lens flare. It's a very nice effect, much better than you can get with Combustion alone.

Also, I looked at the animated version and I will admit it looks much better than the still frame.

My MS media player (version 7.1) can't play your avi.

How about a simple animated gif?

I forgot to mention that you need the DivX 5.2 CODEC to view the file. I can't upload a gif file or more compatible AVI file because the server I am using won't let me put up files larger than 1.5 megabytes. sry.

I just played the new version of freeform and the explosion does look better. The pic u put there does not do it justice. I agree with rapscallion, Uploading a small gif ani would be a good idea.

Combustion wasn't designed to make explosions in the first place, they just put it in for convenience...It was designed to make fire like torches and campfires, which I can really make look good with.

Of course,if you want something better and free get the blurfire plugin and/or Particle Combustion now those rock.

Check also inferno and firestorm.
