"Hmm, I listen to those bands too. Except I never heard of jets to brazil"

of all people, i wouldn't have expected you to listen to the music i do, mr. skater never heard of J2B tho? sigh.. you haven't lived.

"Why does every coder listen to mosh 'rock'"

i don't! i hate it.

"I can't stand that thump-thump-thump crud that idiots play too loudly in their cars"

me neither, except where i live, it's nelly or p.diddy or whatever the f** stupid rapper names there are. no such thing as techno in the US, really.

looking at my list.. i also have weezer, some sum 41, sugar ray, smash mouth, one the strokes song, red hot chili peppers, bohemian rhapsody by queen, a few modest mouse songs, some cake, one citizen king, strangely some blink 182, and a vitamin C song. wtf?!

the nature of fanboy was irrepressible.

Ha! I have even typed to the beat at times. Current music is Enigma, Fluke, various Goa Trance tunes.

I really enjoy it when my wife is gone because then I can crank the speakers in my studio to the max (well, not to the max cause that would blow the windows out) and I can "feel" the sound while developing.

It is weird though, if I start coding before I start the music then I forget to turn it on.

Eeek... Van B obviously hasn't listened to any decent progressive for a while. The mind reels... Just off the top of it comes groups like Hallucinogen, bitmonx, koxbox, Shpongle, infected mushroom. Ah, that's coding music for you.

-----
They SAID that given enough time a million monkeys with typewriters could recreate the collected works of William Shakespeare... Internet sure proved them wrong.

Yeah Micro, most of my music is old - I've actually bought 'Ten' (Pearl Jams first album, released 1990) about 5 times over the years due to scratches!. I do like QOTSA (although they're fairly old, just more popular now), but I find this sort of music is ageless, and it all inspires the new guys so I tend to stick with the bands who've been making this stuff for years and are still going. It's not just music that I drag my heels with either, you should see my collection of emu games and old computer magazines! (Van-B lovingly curresses his STOS manual even though it's completely useless to him and he hated STOS in the first place).

I'm an old fart remember, pushing 30 and not exactly sharp when it comes to upto date stuff (I only just bought a mobile phone!).

Agree with Van-B on Pearl Jam. One of my All time favourites.

Also been listening to new Maroon 5 album, Snow Patrol and any Grant Lee Philips. Ben Folds -'Rocking The Suburbs' is also recommended

I have to have music on to get my brain into gear. Then I can turn it off and let the creative juices flow or just flow with the beats. Some of the things I listen to:

FooFighters
Limp Bizkit
Smashing Pumpkins
Evanesence
Linkin Park
Enya
Cusco
Pan flutes from the Andes
Neil Diamond
Mozart
Final Fantasy
Johnny Cash
Kingston Trio
Real Life
Yes
Sting
Wierd Al
Queen
Blink 182
Aerosmith
Bon Jovi
Barenaked Ladies
Good Charlotte
U2
Dave Matthews Band
Tom Petty

I listen to almost everything except heavy deathmetal and country is kinda scary.

I do not feel pain; only the lack of a controller.

I listen to rockabilly and psychobilly music when I program. Lots of punk too. Old punk, not that crappy new age cream punk junk that's so popular these days. ie. Avril, Blink 182, and lol...Good Charolette. That junk ain't punk. That's not even punk fasion...Now I'm not an elitist or anything, but jesus...Posers suck. But that's just my opinion, and I'm the first to admit that I'm an opinionated jerk. I'm pretty comfortable with that...

Good punk bands (just a few)...
Circle Jerks
Cocknoose
Cocksparer
Crass (one of my favorite cry baby bands...wah! we're unemployed! oi oi oi!)
Dead Kennedy's (not big into policically charged bands...but jello's a riot)
DRI (old pre thrash stuff. good ole stupid fun)
Electric Frankenstein (wow! great live band)
Gangreen
GBH (my personal favorite. it's fun to hurt things)
Lick the Pole (hot chics with huge chesties...mmm)
Misfits (hate to say it...but they got a few catchy tunes...not my personal favorite)
Nine Pound Hammer (and nashville pussy too...)
Ramones (just the silly stuff...not the lovey dovey crap)
Sex Pistols (Hey, the one album they had was good... All things considered...)
SNFU
Social Distortion (really good stuff)
Subhumans
UK Subs (just saw them 2 weeks ago for the 2nd time live. thought they were dead)
Wasted Youth
Viletones
Vice Squad (oldie but a goodie. she was hot 25 years ago)

I could rifle off about 25 other bands but...Who cares...None of you are reading this anyways.

Yeah thats some good music... not a big punk goer, but still like punk nonetheless. Like the Offspring back in the day, with good songs like Blackball, ah those were the days...

All those punk bands's names sound like something you read in a murder novel, hehehehehehehehe Mozart hehehehe. Ya I hate punk and rap and pop and heavy metal (not that heavy really). Hey any other Alturantive listeners here? anyone,... anyone,... oh, I feel so lonely, it's cold.

@Van B

If you're an old fart and not even thirty... I guess I'm off to the Sunshine Home for the Elderly. And that STOS-manual. It's punishment for going with the ST in the first place. Heathen!

Everybody knows that if you didn't have the Amiga, then you are going straight to that hot place without passing Go. Worse if you did have the Amiga, and the ST.

I just think that kind of music lends itself to coding. I listen to everything from Aria from Johann Sebastian Bach's Goldberg variations to Nirvana when I want to enjoy music. When you're tired and want to relax, there's nothing like a good classical selection of say Albinoni and Schubert and Bach. Or Smashing Pumpkins or Nirvana or Hole. But for coding, I've found that in my case progessive house or trance works best.

This really annoys me.

When people try and make out like they're really cool and different for listening to alternative music, saying stuff like : "You probably won't like this - just my weird tastes"

Arrgghh!!!

There's a huge audience for alternative music.
Loads of people here have mentioned alternative music in their lists.

Yeah yeah - big up The Flaming Lips.

My favourites are YBTPR 1 & 2, Fight Test and In The Morning of the Magicians.

You can listen to loads of their songs on their website

My favourite band is Eels. They vary their sound so much, jazz one minute, rock the next. http://www.eelstheband.com

Listen to

- Mr E's Beautiful Blues
- Souljacker
- Not Ready Yet
- Flyswatter
- Guest List
- My Beloved Monster

Whatever. All their songs are good.

Yeah, "Alternative" is such a loose term these days. I can't keep up with all the genre's these days. It was so much easier in the 80's. HEH
