You can download the new version of 'the city' through this link. There are also a few screenshots there.

Updates inculde;
-better car ai.
-fancy lookin' sphere mapping.
-timer based loops which (i think) will ensure a constant running speed and more realistically timed physics.

Enjoy!

This forum won't create clickable links if address has a space (%20) in it. Rename your folder without a space and it will work.

I have played all of the city versions, and this one has improved quite a lot, especially being as I have a better graphic card now.

All I can say it, awsome job dude! This rocks, reminds me alot of GTA 3, all it needs is some pedestians and the ability to shoot at them lol. By the way I wanted to make a game like GTA a while back but gave up because I did not know how to program the car physics and the car AI, but your game has both those things so I am wondering, how did you do it?

testing....

first of all, ditch the install program. I hate that more than anything. a simple zip file will do.

pretty cool. just a few things though. the sound when hitting a car is very annoying. try using "if sound playing(#)<>1". Increase the friction between the car and the road. And the longer I played, the slow the game started to run. Started getting choppy after awhile.

very nice dude. yeah it does remind me of GTA 3, u adding lighting system? lightmapping? lightposts? headlights on cars? so far pretty impressive work. kinda low poly u should play with the draw distance, and poly count see if u can get a bit more polys, also question i see spaces between textures on the street,is that a graphical error? or an normal thing now? but either way very very nice. keep up the work.

Maybe you should put a bigger matrix at the sides of your current one so that it looks like there's an ocean or something, and maybe letting us go into the water.

sorry havent posted for a bit, I was away for the weekend.

there's some cool ideas in here (some of which i've already planned) and i do plan to continue work on it. sorry, for all the probs with downloading/installing, i'll change stuff tomorrow.

i think the next version will include pedestrians (static to begin with), and the beginings of a weapon/damage system.

However, i've got an even cooler project in development which will take up some of my time (oh yeah, and exams), so development on 'the city' may take a while.

I like the look of this, keep up the good work, just two things wrong with it.

1) Cars drive along inside eachother sometimes.

2) I managed to get off the edge of the terrain, but it actually appeared underneath me after i did something ( cant remember what it was a while ago)

apart from that very nice.

see my CCP post in the WIP forums. Im making an 'interactive world' editor for you to make your own cities/towns/villages/countrysides to drive around causing havoc. It uses my CCP(cinematic car physics) which are infinately better than those in 'the City'.

It's now late, but i've managed to add shadows to the cars. It was simple, but looks pretty good, Next up; a particle system.

..and i now have my homemade particle system (needed bigger particles). Got the ability to place fire or smoke. Smoke has been implemented into the skidding, but because ghosted plains sometime hide stuff behind them, you can't really see the smoke in action.
Any solutions?

hey, good job! I can see you've put a lot of work into it, however I have my qualms:

1). You can drive to the edge of the map and then walk off of it.

2). Car skids like it's on ice.

3). If you get into a car and drive toward a building but hit the spacebar before you hit it(the building) the momentum of the car carries it into the building.

4). Like in number 3, but if the car is sticking about halfway out of a building and you get right next to it and enter it the car will sometimes jump several thousand feet in the air and i watch the car for about a muinet before it comes back down.

5). I wish you could get on top of buildings.

made in DBPro. But now with upgrade 5.4, tis totally screwed up. All of the code regarding matrices no longer works due to arrays and stuff. and for some reason it closes after a couple of secs.

it seems that every upgrade is actually a downgrade.

@hmm - a little note: shift matrix up and shift matrix down were switched in upgrade 5.4 | Look in the bug report forum about matrixes, theres at least one or two that might be of intrest to you.

This game looks like it could change the way we've seen DB or DBPro completely. Just a suggestion: Try to make it look and feel very much like GTA, because if you do, this game will be a sure hit. Maybe you should add a story mode, where you take the phone calls to get random jobs and that kinda thing. Shoot padestrians, like they said before, but also add gang members trying to kill you. Makes the action more intense. Cheers!

Awesome game!
I like how you can walk around and pick up any car.

Things that need work:
Physics - The cars don't flip! I've made them do many things that would cause them to flip and they don't

Website - The link is fake. I would use image maps if you wanted to do that, or just use plain text. Rename city.htm to index.html, and get rid of the space in the folder name.

i like the way you can walk through cars
also there is a white line between the textures in the matrix

apart from that its a good game and i spent a while messing around in it. the car models are good and the sounds too.

keep the work up and use the v5.5 beta if you want most of the bugs fixed.

Thanks for all the new suggestions. At the moment I'm completely devoted to finishing my 'i world' program which currently has all the features that you have suggested (guns, people, police, cool physics, sounds, effects).

I will come back to 'the city' though to finish it off once ive done 'i world'. I think I've learnt a lot of useful stuff.

Cool game man, the only problems are the crashing sound that has been mentioned, and the friction problem mentioned. The turning is too uhh slow I guess I should say? Also, make them cars go faster!!!

Heh the gravity is nice:
