Hijacker: First Contact is a side scrolling/overhead 3d shooter with a twist: you can take over every enemy ship you encounter by locking on with your tractor beam and "hacking" into their ship systems. Use this and other special abilities as you blast your way through over 50 action-packed levels!

For those of you who don't remember, the demo of Hijacker took 2nd place in the RGT Competition a while back. The full game has finally been completed and its on sale now!

If you're wondering whether its worth the 17 MB download, just listen to what some of the beta testers had to say:

"OMG it's superb!"
"I love the game, great effects, nice balance"
"The basic game is fairly standard horizontal scrolling stuff but the addition of the hijacker mode adds so much extra depth to it"

The full game is just $9.95!

So give the free demo a try, and let me know what you think!

[edit] Wow. Indeed a really nice game. Why doesn't it work in win XP without being simulated as Win98/ME?

Because its written in DBC and that has issues with XP. Not on all machines, but just some so I figured its best to put that message in there.

Thanks for the comments guys, I hope to get a few more

Does the retail version have the option to increase the reolution? The game looks cool. but my video card cuts out parts of the screen at anything under 800 by 600.

hmm well I could add that option in. I tried before but changing the res caused it to crash on most people's systems.

If you're really interested in buying it I can throw up another download with the res increase.

Im not sure if setting the display mode removes loaded media. You should add a option before starting the actual game. 3D scenes are enlarged automaticly and the rest should just be centered or blitted at the top-left corner (this way you dont have to change the button codes and such)

I like it. It is obvious that a lot of effort went into making a full story line and gameplay experience.

Troan, did you read the ReadMe file? If you're using XP then it has a suggestion to fix that problem. I too had that (except with every level) problem, and the thing the ReadMe file suggests fixed it for me.

Lost in Thought, I'm sorry but I wasn't thinking when I said I could throw up a demo with that option in. I forgot about how text is repositioned on different resolutions and such. I can't really rework all of the text, and I'm also out of string (DBC has a low limitation for those who don't know). Sorry, I wish I could help you out and I could use the sale

Oh well. It looks like a great game anyway. Try and remeber the ones who can't display 640 by 480 in your next game If DBC has screen width and screen height commands you can program your text to auto position for different resolutions.

[Edit] You can program it to do that without those commands too.

Well in the full version you get to play through the other 20 or so levels in that mission and once you beat them it unlocks the ability to play another 25 from the alien's side

Downloaded it, and the game is pretty good. Of course, I was weaned on pattern based Japanese-style shooters, so IMO the rest of the game is happening too fast while my other hand is busy on the arrow keys. The controls are kinda slippery too (Some inertia-ish feeling). But I don't mean that the game is bad - in fact it's possibly one of the best I've seen done in classic, and it also stacks up with the DBPro games. Just not my "style" that's all, so the game is kinda hard for me. Dunno, I think it just focused more on fun and different gimmicky gameplay enhancements rather than strict high-score driven play. Great work though, and I want to see more shmups made in DB.

btw, funny how you buy your top-of-the-line gear in a junk shop.

Looks like a great game but the keyboard controls fee awkward for me.

Does the full version allow you to change the keyboard configuration. Perhaps with more playing I would get used to it but I prefer to control my ship with the arrow keys in these types of games, and fire with the left ctrl and shift or alt keys. I know that your game uses the arrow keys for hijack, but I'd like to reassign them to 'w, a, s, d'. I haven't tried palying with a mouse yet (I'm on my laptop).

Also, In the full game can I bypass the title screens quicker.

I had that problem with my RPG Tutorial. The solution for me was to put all the loading into a gosub, and then have a statement such as

If ChangingRes = 1 then Return

And when you change the res, you simply turn that on so it will come right back after it reloads all the media. I see where you might have a problem with the strings and such - did you hardcode all of the message positions?

Anyhow, amazing game - I hope it sells well (as it should!) And I was wondering, what about 8 Towers? I havent seen it around for a while and I found the gameplay incredibly addicting!

Cheers!

Sorry I haven't been on this thread in a while

Thanks for all of the comments. Strangely, I haven't sold a single copy yet. The prequel (which isn't nearly as good) sold a decent amount but this is a total flop. Oh well, you win some you loose some.

Oh and 8 Towers isn't being worked on now, but it will be soon.

It sure can, but only if it was made with the Enhancement Pack installed.

Other than that, what you can do is, in the same directory as the main exe, create a file called "setup.ini" and in it put:

This will give you a kind of windowed app... what it does is it makes the app run in a window, but still in full-screen, kind of hard to explain till you see it yourself, lol.

Kain, great game, but, for a better marketing appeal, maybe you should look at giving your site a bit of a face lift.

The general layout, and the header image look good, but the text size and font, along with the Maroon/Red title bars don't look the best.

Also, there is ALOT of blank space on a 1024x768 view, which makes the page rather boreing to look at.

Just a bit of a suggestion to maybe help sell a few more copies.

Also, try to limit the news on the main page to about 3 articles, and have all the older ones accessable on another page.

Jess.

I really think that this thread deserves to be *bumped* at least once. sorry if anyone disagrees. This game is really well put together. I'll post a review of this game this weekend, and perhaps more people here will be exposed to it.

(btw, I am in no way associated with the development of this game nor it's author. Just suprised that there wasn't much discussion about this accomplishment.)

Good point zennasem. This game is FAR better than the credit/attention it's getting. The gameplay is incredibly smooth and I haven't run across ANY slowdown which is prone to many side scrolling shooters (including the famous R-Type series). As a happy owner of the full version, this game is a steal at $9.95. You'll certainly get your money's worth. Keep up the good work Kain. BTW, how did you make your ship's shield? Is it a sphere with a scrolling texture? I did something similar in the game I'm working on (just a colored sphere), but it's not near the eye candy level as yours and was curious if you'd mind sharing what you did...
