damn you guys, you made me remember a bunch of movies i really like, ok, this is going to be added to my old list (i don't know why, i just graduated high school and i'm already bored, lol)

The thing you've got to understand about the silmarilion is it's a history book, hence it's a very boring read. It's for die hard fans who just want to learn more about the history of middle earth.

I read it and I really enjoyed the bit about "The Black Sword". The thing that got to me was elves who were mentioned early in the book, not brought up for four chapters and then you've got to look them up when something happens to them, so you know who they are.

Fav. Movie ever - ALIENS!



Absolute pure class. Then again anything James Cameron is - Terminator 2, The Abyss, etc.

Worst movies? Hmm.. there are loads, but personally I think the entire Matrix trilogy sucks donkey balls. It's unoriginal and the last 2 films were just dire pseudo-intellectual claptrap.

The writer character (played by Meryl Streep) is a real person.

She wrote an article for The New Yorker about orchids. It was really popular and so she expanded it into a book - The Orchid Thief

They wanted to make this book into a film and so asked Charlie Kaufman to adapt it.

He handed in the script for Adaptation.

Worst:
hmm... I forgot the name of that movie. It was produced by Mel Gibson, the main character's name was Os or something. I didn't know something could get worse than watching PowerRangers.

Clockwork Orange - Stanley Kubrick was a genius. His ideas didn't always work well (2001 is very difficult to understand first time round), but they pulled off in style here.

LOTR - Simply for visual beauty and the breathtaking scale of it all.

Terminator 2 - Its a very simple film but the characters remain immortal.

Also deserving an honorable mention, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. The way that Schinler's List was black and white except for the little girl in red was very touching. In SPR, the shot where a soldier holds up his helmet in awe when it protects him from a bullet, then promptly receives a fatal blow.

Of recent films, Johnny English and Love Actually were very good, and very, very British. I remember in JE when English destroys the speed camera a huge cheer rose up in the cinema
