what fps were you getting by the way?

it runs slow in general, but simply because I need to refine the physics a little more. it runs at several hundred frames/second on my CPU in windowed mode. the real issue is the physics settings (object mass, gravity, etc). right now I think I need a little more gravity to make it run smoother.

48-60fps... is the physics speed tied into the sync?

no, only if the program drops below 40fps, then it slows down to maintain stability. I was just curious if you meant it was slow as in fps, or slow as in the actual in-game movement is slow. looking at your fps, I can see that you meant the in-game movement. which as I mentioned above, needs some tweaking, as it is a bit slow right now.

I also need to fix a problem with some joint rotation, namely the hands and ankles, they don't seem to rotate quite right all of the time.

it runs in full-screen-exclusive mode, so it should stay around 40-60fps, depending on your monitor's refresh rate.

I get a steady 66 , see my specs below. just a question, I'm working on my own physics engine and I would like to know how ragdolls work, I know how to calculate physics for 1 object but I've no idea how to do ragdolls, could you tell me something about them?

Constant 60fps on Athlon XP 2000+, 512MB, MSI GeForce4 Ti4600 (128MB)

Definately needs a speed increase though as everthing bit too sluggish but at least the potential is there for a great game.

great job!
consistantly 50 Frames/sec
I agree with a little speed in game play

cool!

my only criticism, you should set your rar packages to extract a folder to the chosen destination. In other words add a folder to rar package that has all the files in it, not just the files themselves. I had to spend a few minutes cleaning up a directory that I use for something else because when I extracted the monkey files there I was expecting it to be in a folder, not just the files

Have to agree with CattleRustler on the self extractor. I always download stuff to my desktop and expect the extractors to create a folder on my desktop and stuff the files in their. I get slightly miffed when my desktop suddenly fills with zillions of files! Luckily I saw the extract path and shoved file in a new folder before double-clicking it.

Now, what to do with monkey object (or is it george?). Maybe a game called 'spank the monkey'.

Pretty sweet demo, ran at a constant 64 fps on
p4 1.6,512 ddr,geforce fx 5600 ultra 128

I always right click and extract to folder with winzip, winrar so the extracting to desktop didn't get me, just a habit i started after getting a desktop full of files from things in the past.

I also dloaded the Newton dll and walabers wrapper package - very nice work! I like the demos. I am going to have some fun with this - also now tgc is starting to patch/fix stuff up in dbp so what a perfect time to get back into dbp coding. Maybe now I will actually make something beyond "test" games

nice screeny!

just an update, I have solved the problems that were plauging the wrist and ankle joints. I will release a new, improved version of this game in the future, with the updated ragdoll system, and a 10-frame scoring system as well.

I'm a little busy working on the next version of the wrapper, so it might be a while before it's released.

Nice demo
was fun making the monkey let go the instance the platform dropped.

all it was missing was sound, I bet it is possible to play an impact 3d sound which volume depended on the force of the impact.

anyways cool stuff keep up the good work.
you could make a ragdoll demo where you can shoot monkeys (maybe with instant bullets, and the newton impulse command) into the water.

progress update
working on a complete version of this game... here's some progress shots:

MAIN MENU:

http://walaber.dbspot.com/rmb/prev1.jpg - 800x600 image

IN-GAME DISPLAY:
*press the monkey head for the settings menu
*press the camera (temp graphic) to change the camera angle
*still missing the scoreboard

http://walaber.dbspot.com/rmb/prev2.jpg - 800x600 image

SETTINGS MENU:
this pops up when you click on the monkey head

http://walaber.dbspot.com/rmb/prev3.jpg - 800x600 image

so far I've got the menus working great... and it can calculate how many pins you knock down each try. next I need to build in a player system, plus a 10-frame game with scoring.

then sound effects, music, and it'll be done! probably be done within a week or two

NOTE - the main menu images and the monkey head icon were rendered with POV-RAY, using slightly higher poly versions of the game models

That's really cool, my FPS was fine. Just the normal quarms about wrists and ankles, and the slow pacing. Framerate was fine (didn't check).

I'm waiting in anticipation for the next wrapper.

I'm not sure how... seeing as its a bowling game...

but there will be more technique required in the final version (probably done in 1-2weeks).

any comments on the UI / On-Screen-Display?

I am looking forward to this for sure.

You could also do a game based on 100 pins as a perfect score with no second 'swings' at the frame. Score based on three games making a set. Based on those rules, I played a game last night scoreing 86 - 88 -89 = 263 out of 300 (Avg = 87.66)

Or maybe I'm just not very good.

Wasting CPU Cycles since the 286 was a hot machine.

no absolutely not... Newton itself is still just in Beta. the SDK itself will continue to improve, and I'll keep updating the wrapper long with it. however, as of the next wrapper release, all of the current features of Newton will be wrapped, so you could say it's "stable", if not complete.

this game is mostly an excuse to show off what DBPro and Newton can do plus I like bowling with monkeys, what can I say

hehe, Monkey Bowling does have it's pleasures, I must say!

I've added the ability to control your swing slightly (you can guide your monkey to the left/right to pick up spares, and you can pump slightly to get a farther throw.

I've also added the first sound effects, they are working well.

I think I'll make the lane a little longer, and add a "wind" feature. kind of like a golf game, there'll be a small wind guage in the corner of the screen, and you have to contend with that as well.

which means I should probably make the game take place outdoors... but I want to get the game released, so I can have time to finish up the next Wrapper release, all in time for the upcoming compo! So I don't have too much time to model an entire new background...

Maybe if I whipped up a few palm tree models I could get something going...
