I had a PIII 192MG ram TNT 32 vid mem;
Everytime I used the windows mode it was significantly slower; almost crawl speed and exclusive mode was way faster.

No I have a P4 256MG and 64 vid ram GForce and the windows mode is way faster than the exclusive mode!

Just a note to let you programmer "guys" know that these differences will make a real difference in the final product!

Indeed - according to Raven, exclusive mode locks the screen refresh to a certain amount, and window mode doesn't.

Am I correct in saying that any commerical game that uses DirectX must run in a window mode (in order to get a decent speed)?

I can't get the exclusive mode to work at anymore than a quarter speed of the full screen windows mode, and my pc isn't exactly a power house - 800Mhz 64Mb GF4

That reduction would be about right, unfortuntaly - the speed drop is dramatic...

yup, that's right... just download DirectX SDK and run the exemples in full screen and windowed modes to see the diferences.

Windows mode, unless your inlaws are using a pii with 333MHz.
Windows are way slower (crawl speed)
