Hi all,

As promised, the forums are now running on a brand-new dedicated server. This beast of a box is doing nothing at all but powering Apollo which has given it a nice kick in the pants re: response-times, and also feed-up a load of resources on the main web server.

There is very little actual difference between this and the previous version, a few minor tweaks here and there - but that is all. The javascript menus are gone to help with page load speed and the forum now always defaults to the TGC header/footer colour scheme, but it is a small price to pay really.

If you find a problem and can post about it - do so here please. If it's a posting/replying related problem then email me instead.

Cheers,

Rich

Rich - old profiles in new posts

I edited something in my profile, but when I post my old profile is shown. Also there is no link from the forum pages to the new profile area.

EDIT: Sorted. The link to MODIFY PROFILES still point to www... instead of forum.... so typing it in manually brings you to the correct page. Once there and edited, the correct profile data is displayed with the new posts

I noticed the fastest page loads here arent as fast as the fastest page lloads on the old server, but I am betting that this server will remain consistently at this speed (which is fairly fast) - which I think was the point.

CattleRustler - there is no reason for any page to load faster in your browser than before, nothing has changed "under the hood" - it's the same code, the same SQL statements, the same eventual page size that is transmited. What SHOULD change is the reliability and consistency, as you said, as speed at peak times of the day.

Cheers,

Rich

Rich - Then I have to say that the pages are not loading as fast as they should. I don't know why but these pages arent loading as fast as they used to, but if the "crawl-to-a-standstill" factor has been eliminated then I am with fine with it

Try trace routing to the server to see what the general response time is for you and compare it with the main web server.

CattleR - depends, compare it with a trace to our main web server and see what the difference is. 110ms is perfectly fine, I average about 125ms from here (UK) to our web server (US) and about 58ms to the Forum server.

This new server is hosted in Europe which will please 50% of our visitors and cause the other 50% to make a trans-atlantic hop to get here, but these days the impact that has isn't significant enough to worry about. So long as it STAYS at around 110-200ms, even under high-load times of the day, then I'll be perfectly happy.

Cheers,

Rich

It seems that a though characters arenĀ“t displayed propaly. I keep seeing a strange "a" followed by the euro sign instead of whatever should have been there.
Edit: It happens in the Miss Kitty Fantastico... demo and screens thread.

It is probably the codepage changing between UTF-8 and ISO 8859-1, if you've gone from US to European servers. You can force it back in the .htaccess file, can't remember the syntax off-hand, but you find it on google
