This is just another witch hunt - first it was violent books - then movies - then certain music (e.g. emimen) - now games

The psyciatrist said after examining the boy that his mental state was not unbalanced. The boys mother then went on to say that that statement by the psyciarist proved that video games unbalanced her son's mind.

If some people had their way violence of any form (including verbal) would be banned in books, movies, music, and games (thats right mario can no longer jump on evil toadstalls with feet as that is violent).

This whole thing was blown out of proportion by the word go - you see more violence and grusome remains in movies then you see in films.

For gosh sakes everyone, quit blaming the conservatives. Not *every* violent video game hating person is a frickin' right-winger. Get over it.

ON TOPIC:
I remember the parents of some of the Columbine victims were blaming Doom. At the time (1999), Doom was about 5 years old and I remember thinking it was ridiculous blaming a game that normal teenagers don't play anymore. The media just likes to blame the most recent, most violent game they have a record of--- this is why Doom was blamed up until GTA 3. Then it was GTA 3/Vice City for a few years. Now it's Manhunt, and it may be Doom 3. In 5 years from now, if there isn't a new controversial game released and a kid gets a spike in the head, they're gonna blame Manhunt or Doom 3. It's a cycle.

Article on GamaSutra:

Quote: "New Twist In Manhunt Murder Row
New details have emerged concerning the murder of Briton Stefan Pakeerah, which the British tabloid press have blamed on the influence of Rockstar title Manhunt – leading to many chain stores removing the title from shop shelves and calls for all violent games to be banned.

It now transpires that the 17 year old murderer did not own a copy of the game, which should not be sold to those below the age of 18, but that 14 year old Stefan did.

Ironically it is primarily the victim’s family that blames the game for influencing the murderer and they have indicated that they are “saddened and disappointed” that the game has almost sold out across the UK, in the wake of the controversy.

Investigating police though are satisfied that the game has nothing to do with the murder, with a spokesman commenting that, “We haven’t connected the game with the murder and we’ve already made that statement, but some sections of the media chose to ignore it… the motive was robbery.

And yet pcworld / dixons have said already that because of this issue they will be no longer selling computer games at their stores.

This is over reaction taken to the extreme

oh, and by the way:

@Drew Cameron: I was actually much more mature when I played more violent video games. But, in the ast few years, I haven't played as many as when I was little

And, at everyone:

Do guns kill people?
Or do telekinetic raygun-weilding monkeys kill people?

WWSD?

if i was attacked by someone with a weapon (ie trying to kill me) i would not go as far as kill them but i wouldnt be nice, and also i wouldnt kill someone on the off chance or for a minor (compared to murder) reason, just hurt them

If I had a weapon(Like a stick), I would hit them a couple times, take thier weapon, and run away with it. If they chased me then I would(assuming it's a gun) shoot and miss and see if they go away. If they don't and come close to me, I would(sort of be forced) to shoot both thier legs(above the kneecap) and continue to run, otherwize, I would just run.

Quote: "This boy was not a violent person before playing the game, and that's what is causing controversy with this paticular game - Manhunt. The murder *was* influenced by Manhunt, the boy admitted to it and his friends confirmed he was obsessed with it. His family did not know about the game's content."

Ok thats total bs i mean common the parents didn't know? For starts games have ratings like movies if the parents cared alittle more about there child then i guess they should have know what he was being subjected to while playing that game. I disagree with the game being banned it's art plain and simple it might not suit the taste of all the people out there but thats the case with any art. If you want to ban games for there content whats next horror movies, war movies, TV shows with shooting, guns where will it end. The simple fact is the boy did something wrong no matter where he got his ideas from and now that he realizes his wrong doing is going to have consequences he wants a scapegoat, i have manhunter myself played it many times and have yet to feel the desire to kill someone after playing it, fact is he was a sick individual to begin with.

Sadly I Can't find That Everquest One But I Will. But In The Meantime

In the wake of a recent deadly Tennessee shooting in which two teens shot and killed a man, the family of the deceased has filed a lawsuit against Take-Two Interactive, publisher of Grand Theft Auto, according to ABC News. Both teens have plead guilty to reckless homicide, aggravated assault, and reckless endangerment.

The game was implicated as an inspiration for the teens, ages 14 and 16. According to the news dispatch, the plaintiff's attorney, Jack Thompson, stated, "The industry needs to cough up money so victims and their families can be compensated for their pain... The shareholders need to know what their games are doing to kids and their families. They need to stop pushing adult-rated products to kids. These products are deadly."

The Entertainment Software Association reportedly responded in a statement that said, "Parents are present at--and involved in--the purchase or rental of games 83 percent of the time, according to a September 2000 Federal Trade Commission report." The statement did not mention that Grand Theft Auto games are rated "M" for Mature and are intended only for audiences aged 17 and older.

Stop Pushing These Products To Kids? Im Not Sure They Are. Its Not In This One But The Two Kids Said They Were Trying To Be Like The Game A 14 And 16 Year Old Dont Have Nuff Common Sense To realize That Shooting Someone Is Illegal. HONESTLY

I dont know where you live but in Florida at the age of 16 you are old enough to drive a Car on your own. My point is that unless you are mentally ill, at the age of 10 you should have enough common sense that killing someone is Illegal.

You make it sound like kids are hamsters kept in cages and spend all thier time running the hamster wheel. Kids can get thier hands on video games one way or another (e.g contacts at school, parents at work, or just BUY one..etc)
