Why, do the competitions always have to limit game types and ideas? This years compo has you making one of three games, I find this kind of dissapointing, as its just going to make the compo boring. At least last year, you could do anything you wanted aslong as you used that alien model. Oh well, looks like Im not going to enter in the compo, as I really have no idea how to do any of those games lol , snake seems really hard! I wish they would just allow you to make what you want to make, instead of confining you to 3 pretty lame ideas.

Why ? Please give reasons.

Actually, I've got a bit of experimental code for snake - once you think about it, its quite easy.

I am doing the comp cuz it's easier then last years and I am a pretty new programmer. I admit it is a little too over limited but my Snake game is very different from the original Snake and my Scorched Earth game is kinda more like Gunbound.

I think that it is a better comp for biginner to moderatly skilled programmers.

well, what I mean, is that I think it would be way more fun, if everybody could come up with their own game styles, srories, and gameplay. No matter what you do this year in that compo, it has to come out to be atleast similar to one of those ideas, which I think limits the imagination, This is just my opinion, nobody has to take it seriously, but I just dont like being limited, I always stand up to that, thats like saying "you can make whatever you want, but it has to be like snake" I just dont like that.

It's a contest, and as such, entries have to be judged against each other. By putting some minimal limitations, it helps the judges to score the entries. Beyond that, there are hundreds of themes that you can apply to the entries.

If you're unable to see how to enhance and build upon the game types offered, then it's not the competition that's limited.

I agree that it is too limited but I am going to participate. I do need a new graphics card (and yes the ones up for grabs are better then mine [I still have a GeForce 3]), or some of the media packs would be nice.

I think that a good option would have been a modified 2D FPS (like the original Doom) or even a 2D FPS.

@Major Payn

I agree with you.

This competition does seem to limit it to one of three game types, where the Alienware was COMPLETELY OPEN ENDED.

Here are some ideas that might help make this competition feel less restrictive:

Instead of just having a snake, you could make it like a heard of elephants, or a swarm of bees or a group of aliens. As long as it is like the snake game, and it has the same feel and basic gameplay, you could be quite creative in what else you could put into it.

As far as the Scorched Earth game, you could:
* Instead of shooting each other, you could like try to toss hot chicks back and forth
* You could try to toss heavy things on your opponents, such as TV sets, pianos, elephants, etc.

As long as it is the same gameplay, you can really do whatever else you want. It doesn't have to "look" like the original, or even have the same limitations as the original.

As far as Snake/Nibbler goes, you could even add new things to the game screen, such as bombs, power ups that play a Brittany Spears video, or really anything.

Even with the limitation of 3 gametypes, you can still do quite a lot.

I tried to run your code, but it didnt work (DBC) . I actually thought of a pretty creative idea for a snake game, instead of a snake, you play as some guy on a rampage! And every person you hit with your car you get another cop trailing behind you! If you hit an obstacle or, a cop car, your busted!

Actually, I have to agree as well. I can't think of a game to use those themes. I can make a snake game, but I hate snake. I can make a fps, but I am not sure how to do 3D bullet code, and don't have time to learn something new. I don't know how to do tank with sloped colission on hills, and destructable terrain. So I have given up on the comp this time. I look forward to the next one!

Scorched Earth I think is the easiest. Because in Snake you need to have the 'tail' follow you exactly where you went, I couldn't figure out a way to do that. FPS's take too long and I have no exp. w/ modeling. Scorched Earth is prety simple I think, but then again my terrain can't be destroyed.

I thought about doing a scorched earth type game, but I dont know how to do the hole tragectory/destroyable terrain thing, so I probably wont even enter the compo this year, I mean, it seems as though they limited the compo to the things I didnt know how to do lol.

If you can't do it then don't, but you should still make the game with out the destroying of the terrain, I am. I am also doing snake but instead of getting longer I am just gunna have a shpere that gets bigger (DO NOT COPY) every time you eat a pellet.

In the snake game I am only using print commands (no sprites as buttons" and DB primatives for the levels. The only extra media I am going to have are textures and sounds.

The MOVE OBJECT command is your friend. Position/rotate the bullet and let it go on moving until it collides with something or goes out of range. Too easy.

Quote: "idea copyrighted by Major payne!"

Just a nit pick. You can never copyright an idea, just the expression of the idea. BTW, it does sound like a cool idea with lots of fun room for special effects like sirens, traffic hazards, enemy units like swat vans, road blocks, and such. Good luck with it.

My alternate snake idea was Zombie Congo Line with you cruising around a cemetary picking up undead dancers, chickens, and skeletons. At least the music part would have been a hoot. I imagined that a pile of bones would be static, zombies, would move slowly, and chickens would run around like their heads were cut off (umm, literally.) [Anyone that wants to use this idea, is more than welcome. I realized that I did not have the artistic ability to pull it off.]

Quote: "I dont know how to do the whole tragectory/destroyable terrain thing"

That's pretty easy, see the arching bullet post here:
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=36905&b=1&p=0

Destructable terrain is not the only game in town. Perhaps you are a mud slinger and you build terrain until the enemy is covered or to protect Lemming-like critters. Or, you are firing snowballs or paint balls. On the Japanese giant monster Scorched Earth game that my son wants to make. The terrain is not destructable, but the buildings that are part of the battle field will be.

I have an idea for an Operation Wolf game, instead of attacking an enemy position you are a medievil hero and you have to campaine through a world killing vampires and monsters to ultimatly save captives from a head vampire or monster. But I don't have time to make it, and I am not a modeler I would need a partner to help me with that one.

I can't draw my way out of a box, but it would be a cool special effect if as the vampires die their death animations would turn them into skeletons. Having played with Newton lately, I have visions of flying ragdoll skeletons collapsing into smoking heaps.

Hmmm, skeltons would also make for a neat Jason and the Argonauts - teeth of the hydra game. Imagine a sword swinging version of Operation Wolf with a multi-headed dragon as the boss.

I think Im going to try and make the snake game, I dont know how, but I can always ask questions, I am going to use the obove idea,(the one with the cops). Maybe I will ask my two friend who have DB to help out, after all, they need new video cards, I dont but I would like a nice suite of software.

Well my snake game has a story! You are driving along one night when you pass through a mysteriouse town called loosifer city, the residents seem to be assembling in the town square for some kind of meeting. Just then your car blows a tire, you decide to walk over to the town square to fetch some help, but as you get closer you hear some very unsettling things, it seems that the people here have all become possesed by the devil himself! They are meeting to try and rise him up to rule the world of man, you knowing that this is not good, quickly run back and fix your car, you have to stop these evel maniacs! So you begin running down the satanic towns people with your car, but now the possesed police are after you! This is were the gameplay comes in, as you try to ram all of the little devils with your car! Each person you hit, another cop car begins to chase you, you have to get enough cop cars chasing you and then lead them into the firery pits of hell! Of course you wont go with them. Pretty cool huh!

While they haven't disclosed how the prizes will be distributed, I don't think they'll give you 3 vid cards just because there's 3 people who worked on the game.

Is this going to be instant collision? It seems to me like it would take ages to get a collision this way. I heard about a long cylinder used as instant collision once.

Ok, here is a COMPLETE snake game I wrote in DarkBASIC Classic, it doesn't even use any media files so you can just paste it in and play. This really isn't very difficult! I've also got a version that uses full sprites and 2 modes of game play + map editor. But something tells me that would be somewhat of an "unfair" advantage.

http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=codebase_view&i=aef4c5d3b16aa49ef2716a87b5a8690f

You can base any 2D snake game on that and the theory is the same for 3D also (but granted, harder to do well).

Anyway, enough excuses already ... "I don't like the game types, waa waa, where's my rattle? Why couldn't you pick a game type I already know? because I'm totally incapable of learning something new! spoon-feed me.. waaaaaa" (etc)

If I had enough time, I would make a mix between snake and space invaders :

- You are the aliens, making a congo line.
- Once you touch another alien, he joins as leader (every type of alien has different abilities as leader : one can shoot, one is faster, the other is normal)
- The is a spaceship firing at you, it destroys the aliens, but if it touches the head, you die.

So I believe that a bedroom programmer with no imagination is no real programmer.

I don't recommend you do, you'll not win a prize, because you didn't read the compo rules. Anyone who thinks we're after copies of the original is barking up the wrong tree.

But then, it's always the ones that talk too much in the forums that never enter anything anyway - so what do I care

The three catagories allow beginners and veterans to have a chance to code something cool. If you can't think of any ideas to expand snake to make something completely new, then too bad for you, but I have ideas jumping into my head right now. Open ended-ness isn't always good, the limit aspect of this compo I think makes it better in some ways, we will be able to see how others went about doing the same idea, and it also means the pressure is on for you to create something amazing to win the compo, as a lot of people will be doing something similar.

Isn't it? Wasn't it? Marvellous!

For the last compo it was the open-endedness that caused some problems. So many people starting one type of game, thinking of something else half way through and then dropping it to do another, never actually finishing anything.

Say, TCA... in your worm example, is there a good method to increase the spacing between worm segments? The code is working excellent, but 1 unit spacing between segments is too little... any thoughts?

Yes, but they either involve women and cream or world domination. But I digress..

It would probably be because to increase & decrease all movement speeds to around 7 or 8, so each O is more or less touching.

Yes, but I adapted the code to 3d, where each unit is a sphere, and I like the speed of the worm at .5 increase. Hmmm...

Sorry if this topic is beyond its title by now. but here's my 2 eurocents.

The prizes are a bit shoddy - there's a few great ones, then the rest are, well, dodgy. Ghost Recon? Rainbow Six? They mnust retail for less than £5 by now.

When I enter a compo I like to have a big prize to aim for. In this compo there's only 3 graphics cards and then next down on the list are PC magazine subscriptions.

What happened to the PCs?
