I wondered how I could implement smoke effects and strobes (pulsating lights) into DBP.
Any thoughts?

Hi there, for smoke, check out the fog commands, or texture a load of ghosted plains with a smoke texture. For strobing, maybe turn DBP's lights on and off pretty damn quickly!

Hope it helps,
Cheers.

Yeah but the DBP lights are limited in amount. Isn't there another way to do this? Maybe fake some lights?

"Yeah but the DBP lights are limited in amount."

that is a DirectX / Hardware limitation, not DBP.

Surely you only need one light if you want a strobe effect? You can hide and show it repeatedly, and change it's colour and stuff. To fake lots of lights which aren't moving, you could possibly use lightmaps, using several different ones which fade in and out.

For a global strobe effect, just turn the Ambient light on and off quickly. Otherwise, use your seven lights. If that doesn't work, you can use lightmaps yes.

Dx 8.1 can handle atleast on TnL card upto 32lights quite happily ... probably just for compatibility issue this was set to 8 in DBpro, but then Shaders were too and they're not exactly wonderfully compatible.

Still I am wondering then: how can I add strobes to every ship in my space game. It's like a universe were spaceships roam about and I'd like strobes and navigation lights on them, so I am talking about quite some lights.
You remember Elite or I-War; like those games.

O.K. THIS MAY SEEM A CHEESY WAY TO MAKE A STROBE LIGHT BUT IF A STROBE LIGHT IS ONE OF THOSE LONG BEAMS OF LIGHT THAT LIGHT UP THE SKY THEN MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY USING A set of GHOSTED COLOURED CONEs THAT ROTATE LEFT AND RIGHT.
JUST A THOUGHT!
and i've just realised that caps lock has been on (oh dear)

Nice thought... maybe in a very small version these would look like strobes or nav lights! Will try it out.
