Hey thurr. I decided yesterday to enter the compo in the Scorched Earth category (despite never having played the game).

I've got most of the artwork done (pretty pleased actually).

Here's a little demo to show off the style -

(Copy + Paste)
http://www.geocities.com/the_smock_issue_3/Scorched.zip (<700kb)

I'm making pretty good progress.

Destructable terrain is 90% there (I'm really pleased of how I'm doing that - it's seriously cool & fast)

If anyone has any suggestions please tell. Doesn't matter how small they are.

You can't move in Scorched Earth, right?

Don't worry, the terrain will be moutainous.

Controls

Mouse - Aim
Click + Hold - Shoot/ Vary Power
Arrows - Move Screen

In the original, no. But in our versions you could fly if you wanted to. Mine is in third person, and you can walk and jump around

Looks really cool. Like the rain. You might want to not include your source code in that zip file though, someone might steal it.

Do you think the muzzle flash looks crap? I'm not sure how to do it.

Looks very nice.
Love the cartoony look.
Are you going to have the camera follow the missile in the final version?

Update time.

http://www.geocities.com/the_smock_issue_3/Scorched.zip

I switched it to 16 bit colour for the mo so it runs reeeaal nice, even on crap computers (60 FPS on my 600 mHz Dell with no graphics card)

I added other tanks!!!

You can't shoot each other yet but next update, I promise.
There's also no collision with the ground yet but there will be, don't worry.

I'm not sure if you'll be able to move in the final version but I stuck it in there for now anyway.

Controls -

Mouse Up/Down ------ Aim
Swing Mouse Left/Right ----- Turn
Left Mouse Button ------ Fire
Right Mouse Button ------ Move

Arrow Keys ------ Move Camera
Tab Key -------- Switch Tank

Cheers!

I've added sounds and I've got completely working collision but I haven't made a level yet (a proper one anyway) so no update yet.

There will be different characters in each of the tanks and they're going to shout insults at each other.

I've got more weather effects as well.

The wind distorts you're shot.

The rain and the snow get blown by the wind (it looks really cool) - So you can tell which way the wind is going by looking at them.

EDIT____________________________________________

Here were go -

Sounds + Awesomely quick collision (if I do say so myself)

Just a suspiciously angular hill at the moment but I'm working on a decent level.

Can you have transparent sprites if the image is a .PNG? I can't seem to get it to work. I've made a work around but it would be better with proper transparency.

I've almost finished the first level - it's called Alpine Meadow.

There will be 5 levels-

- Alpine
- Desert
- Urban
- Snow
- Sci-fi

Some will be at night, and they'll have different weathers and stuff.

Oh yes and they be lovely.

Don't know what paint prog you got, I got paint shop 7.
I do
save as
select png
click run optimizer
click wizard.

You can get some real smart stuff with png masks and stuff. Screen wipes etc.

OK. Thanks, I'll try it.

I've finished the first level. I'll probably change it again but it's a good, simple map to start off on.

It's turning out more like Worms than Scorched Earth but never mind.

I've just got to run a program that gets the ground height off the picture and then I'll upload a demo. The thing is, it takes ages because it's made up of 12 pictures, each 800*768.

Great.

Okaaaaay.

I finished the first level.

It's just simple, one to learn on. There's no wind to distort you're shot.

You can move, but the ground is deliberately uneasy to traverse. You can still tunnel you're way through the mountains if you want.

The other tanks (and you!) react to getting shot now and the collision is totally working (the hardest thing was getting the tanks to bounce of the top of a tunnel)
--------------
What do you think the rules should be? I was thinking three shots per go, but as soon as one inflicts damage on an enemy, that's the end of the go - and they'll be a 30 second clock to keep things moving.
--------------
Does anyone know where to get music from? I really need some.

There are also some minor bug fixes (Have to wait until missile has exploded before you can fire again)

Same link - http://www.geocities.com/the_smock_issue_3/Scorched.zip

New Controls
Spacekey - Jump camera to current player.

I'm working on a HUD and map display now. Should be ready soon.

P.S. Check out the snow at the top of the mountain.

I fixed it now and added some new stuff.

- Lil' intro to level
- Debris flies off when hit
- More sound effects
- Music!

BIG UPDATE

The menu is now totally leet.

I've pretty much finished the game now. You can definatately play it properly now rather than just 'testing' it.

- You get 30 seconds for a go, in this time you can let off as many rockets as you want, but as soon as you hurt another player you're go is over.
- You can take 3 hits before you die. Your health is the throbbing first aid things in the bottom right.
- The time left is bottom left.
- The little red line on the power-meter is you're last shot's power (very useful for adjusting shots)

I sorted out the camera totally so now is smoothly follows things and never just flicks between places. It follows the missile when you shoot.

Controls -

Mouse up/down - Aim cannon
Swing Mouse Left/Right - Turn
Left Mouse Button - Fire
Right Mouse Button - Move
Arrow Keys - Move Camera
Tab Key - Skip Go

Yeah, they'll be wind on the other levels (as well as loads of other weather effects) but this is the first level - when you do a Tournament, anyway - so I wanted it to be simple to learn on.

The level I'm making now is on rocks out at sea during a storm and there's stong wind which changes direction, rain (which is blown the direction of the wind) and lightning.

Small update.

Just ironed out a few bugs and added a new options screen for the Skirmish.

- You get replaced if you fall off the bottom of the screen
- The game ends if someone wins
- You can choose how many players there are
- You can choose the colours of all the players

Any of these:-

Thanks a lot everyone!

Do you think you should have a limited number of shots per go or unlimited and a shorter time (like 15 seconds)? At the moment you pretty much hit every go, it shouldn't be like that.

A little tip, if you think you're shot is going to hit, then you can still move under cover while it's in the air, use the arrow keys to move the camera off the missile. If it's a long shot you'll get about 2-3 seconds to get into a hole or something.

Mwah hah hah.

I wouldn't change though, the other categories are waaaay more competetive. I was doing Snake but changed.

Snake is hard because everyone thought it would be easier

Operation Wolf will have people like Van B entering.

Trust, Scorced Earth is the way.

Hey Jeku. I had an idea.

You could try and make an entry in a similiar style to this:

(Controls ==> Arrow keys, +, - & 0)

It's a game I was making a while ago but gave up on and I think Scorched Earth would look cool in that stylee because a lot of it is about the maths of the missile and stuff.

You could have it draw out the path the missile takes because it would be a perect parabola.

Put those little labels everywhere that give the equations of the graphs, they're mental.

Whatever you do, make sure it is different so it stands out. Go 2D because it is just waaaaay cooler. It is so much easier to make a game look good in 2D than 3D.

Thanks people.

I rewrote a load of the code so now it isn't fixed to one level, it can play others and it loads fine. I haven't made any other levels yet but that's all I have to do now.

Oh, and I've added taunts. A little picture of you're guy pops up and says stuff like "Get on with it"

I'd love some suggestions for taunts - I need 9 in total (one for each number key) but they could be character dependant so maybe more.

The green guy is an old army general and the pink one is a Penelope Pitstop style woman. The snow guy is an eskimo but I haven't decided on the desert guy.

The taunts should be like the Age of Empires ones ("All hail! King of the losers")

So far I have -
"I'm sorry. Was that aimed at me?"
"My Granny's a better aim than you - and she's dead"

I've made it so that if some one is about to be hit, it freeze frames and the guy goes "Oooooooh crap" - then it cuts back and they get pounded by the missile

"Who gave that guy a tank!?!"

Some suggestions(though i played very short, so sorry if these ideas have been implemented already)

Powerups would be nice.. ie. Weapons powerups that change your weapon to say, a homing missile for a turn.

Maybe even something like a hovertank powerup that lets you to temporarily fly around(on a certain amount of time) before it becomes the next players turn.

Just some ideas.

The people clammer for powerups, and the people are given powerups.

So far I have:

Infinite shots for a go
45 Seconds invincibility
Health
Teleport

Anymore ideas? I absolutely cannot be bothered to have flying what with sliding collision on fully deformable terrain. I mean, who am I? Sliding-collision-at-all-angles-on-deformable-terrain man?

I am unbeatable at this game.

My favourite trick is if you get the infinite missiles powerup, (or whenever on you guys' version) you tunnel you're way underneath someone, prepare a little pit all the way off the bottom of the screen below them then hit them from below.

They get hit by the missile and jump up, losing 1 health. The blast from the missile also completes the pit so they fall down it and lose another 1 health. Then they get transported randomly somewhere on the level, so they can't shoot you back.

----------------------------------

Anywaaaaay..... I've finished the second level. Here's a pic with a closeup of the uber-cute snowman:

It's pretty bare and boring but I think it's a good second level.
You can move way more freely.
This is the first level to have wind on so I didn't want it to be too complicated.

The picture doesn't really do it justice because there's some kick-ass snow effects. It's a real blizzard - you can barely see. The snow also get blown the direction of the wind (the wind changes direction and power every few goes)

I also got some pretty nice music for it. Really chilled out.
I've made another character too, he has a blue tank and he's a sea captain/pirate.

--------------------------------------------------

It looked crap when the person's picture popped up on a taunt so now it's just the sound. They all have really distinct voices though so you know who it is..... unless everyone is the same character.

Demo soon.
