Hi all,

I have enabled file attachments in Apollo. It's pretty straight-forward: if you want to attach a file to a message, click the Browse button and select it off your hard drive and then post your message / reply.

If you want to delete a file you have attached to a previous message, just edit your message and you'll see an option to do so.

You can also attach files to old messages - again by editing them.

There is no limit on the file types (because it's impossible to enforce). There is a 1MB limit on the file size. Some browsers might be capable of exceeding this limit, but PHP has it hard-coded at 2MB anyway. So basically if you try and attach a 20MB file to your forum post, it'll take ages to upload and then fail miserably - so don't bother.

When a message has a file attachment, a download button will appear on the RIGHT of the button bar underneath the message. Click Download to grab the file, simple as that.

Don't direct link to files stored in this forum from your own web site, if you need that sort of facility go buy some web space

That's it really.

Cheers,

Rich

If there wasn't the new mod team, I would say : it's too late ... but now ... I'm not sure ... I would say 50% that it will be abused in an intensive way.

And I wonder how many space this will take ... how much space is still available on the server ?

Mods can delete dodgy attachments though, so hopefully we can step on anything potentially harmful or innapropriate.

Now all we need is for Lee to optimise DBPro exe's down to <1mb and we'll be jammin.

looks like it is going to be a great feature - are you going to add a project section to the website, like you said on the welcome page when you sign in?

Hmmm, new features ... looks nice.

But wasn't there a project of a new forum ? I remember there were even beta-testers. Is that thing abandonned ?

Rich, would it be possible to make the file name appear as hover text on the download button, since it doesn't display in the URL? It's just a little bit frustrating that you can't tell if it's something your browser will open automatically, or a file to download.

Mouse - use Firefox and it'll never open the file automatically, click a JPG link and see what I mean - like Hamish's above.

Quote: "But wasn't there a project of a new forum ? I remember there were even beta-testers. Is that thing abandonned ?"

It took me 2 hours to add in file uploads. It will take me significantly longer than that to finish the new forum. With the DBPro book, FPSC web site and other things going on here it's going to be a while before I pick up that project again. Which is a shame coz it was bloody rocking. Next year perhaps.

Cheers,

Rich

Yeah, I'd never use anything but Firefox, but I was thinking of all those lost souls wandering the earth . Then again, it's another incentive for them to get the most secure browser there is, so it's all good

And everyone should know that they should not abuse this feature by posting downloads for no reason, and I am assuming that users can get in deep trouble if they try to attach a virus to the server.

@Rich
Does the server virus check the files that are uploaded?

Spammers don't stand a chance here, and I really don't see how file attachments worsen the situation... us mods can check out attachments before we approve posts from newbies. The only large 'vulnerability' in the approve system is a respectable person going postal, which is rare but cannot be stopped; in that case, we're here to remove and ban when crucial.

Nope, that is your responsibility as a sane PC owner.

People can upload viruses to try and kill the server if they like. It won't work, we're not stupid enough to run Windoze servers.

And yes, you can attach a PHP file if you want to. There is no restriction on file type - it's pointless trying to enforce one.

Mods WILL delete useless files however.

Rich

Just upload the image, post the message, grab the link from the "Download" button to your image file, then edit the message with that link between img tags...
This is the link to DavidT's test post up top here;

the only problem i have is that the download button is a little.... hard to see. i mean, so many people have problem enough figuring out that they code the put in the code box is accessed with that tiny button at the bottom of their post.

make it red instead

I think that the button shouldn't be on the far right, what if there is a huge picture (Mr Underhill's post for example and the user has to scroll to even see if there is a download. Also the Source button isn't on the right...

Anyway, its a good feature, I like it.

Maybe you could make a little section just after the MSN buttons etc, with a little stylish division that separates them. If there is source/download/both, the extra bit will appear and be obvious and easy to access...

Well if their is already enough stuff at the bottom where the msn, yahoo,ICQ,web, email, profile buttons then you can always put the button by the posted dates, and edited dates at the top of the forums. Does it sound dumb?

The reason I suggested that the Source button should go on the right hand side is because it distinguishes between buttons which are specific to the user (on the left) and buttons which are specific to the post (on the right). Plus its easier to see whether or not a post has Source code if the button appears on the right hand side.
