sorry to here you won't be here for a few weeks professor, same goes for me cause of school exams soon (first one is in 2 weeks from yesterday).
i did a little work on the pistol, if anyone sees something that can be got rid of other than the highlighted vertices then let me know

i fixed the angle on the barrel, it was just an optical illusion that it got smaller in the original so i've fixed mine now, removed a few polys too and indicated the next to go.
edit:indicated are on the version in the botton at the right, updated image hasn't got highlighted verts.

ah for the news i need to know details about the mysql on the server, or if it doesn't support it i'll use a text file system.

edit: you might as well see a nice looking version of my pistol instead of wireframe with blue background.

Well I'd make a comment about the models in the thread, but instead of pointing out that most of the current weaponry has been stolen from HL/CS (which c'mon it blatently has been, even with being altered slightly)

What I thought I'd do is make the mesh of a gun that would be useable.. the attached took me what, 20-25min. That isn't important, what's important is the overall mesh design.

Making something low polygon isn't a case of just cutting polygons from obvious places, you need to make sure things are shaped to a reasonable degree. There is no point in making a 120 polygon gun, if no one can even recognise it's a gun

Well anyways. I've attached the weapon, and your free to mess about with it as you want.

Ok...

What makes you think that? Do you have any proof or... "Hmm... i belive a saw a glock 17 in half life 2. Oh i know! He must of took it out of HL2.. or CS2!..."

Besides, half life 2 models would be wayyyy to high poly... I made most of them myself.

Just because you saw a "Glock 17" in a game, doesnt mean they have a copy right (Or some legal right) to that weapon, NONE of my models have been stolen i got my own concept off of google (Or the from the prodigy team).

What you are suggesting is completly stupid, Yes i own half life 2 and yes it has a gun alike the glock17. It may have many others alike ours.

Well nice to be back, i have to leave right now. i should try and be on to morow to but i wont reply tonight, '

Lets not get this thread locked because some one is mad.

Who said it was a Glock?

Quote: "Yes i own half life 2 and yes it has a gun alike the glock17. "

Half-Life 2 has a Custom design USP.

A final point I would like to make... I never said anything about it being the handgun that I was accusing of being taken. Your the one who has jumped to the conclusion I was talking about the handgun.

If you don't want the thread to turn in to flames, then don't comment. I don't know who claims to have made each model, and nor do I care. One thing I dislike more than someone who tries to pass work off as 100% his own, is someone who then tries to claim innocence when someone spots what he has done.

FGS this happened on the Goldeneye-Nemsis project a month ago, someone wanted to join development.. and sent Andy a copy of one of MY OWN models claiming he had done it. When he was asked to produce something that wasn't freely available online, surprise-surprise the quality of the work dropped tremendously.

It is all well and good wanting to help with a project, but FGS be honest about your out-sourcing. You won't tick off as many artists if you just damn well admit things, rather than trying to stress innocence.

Well models can look exactly alike but be made by different people. However it is kinda rude to acuse someone on here of stealing work....especially when you said that they definatly were stolen even with limited proof. However your forgiven. Guys this project looks great it shows how much a community can do when they join together.

ignoring tesio.....

i just checked the guns we have and realised the gun i modeled is already there however i needed to model the gun for another project anyway so it was worth posting it here even just for the crit.

ps tesio, you can see my models progression from scratch so i assume you aren't refering to my model but i can't see any other models that look obviously from cs or half life (although the other gun that is the same style as mine (usp) resembles the cs ct starting pistol, but they are both based on the same gun so they should look similar edit: i have just done a comparison against the cs one and i can assure you there are big differences, the texture is also sufficiently different that it could not be copied) feel free to point out the models that are "stolen"

edit:yay my gallery script is now in use
but you forgot to create the upload files subdirectory i had included in the zip for the upload script to work. (should be a subdir in the same folder as the simple_upload.php script.

He claimed "most" of the weaponry was stolen, yet he only mentioned the pistol. Prof is a good modeller, i doubt he'd steal models.

Tesio, most of the weaponry is modelled by Professor, textured by Grismald (I say most, not all). I can tell you that I personally have seen WIP screenshots of several of his models (not definite proof of ownership, but fairly close). The p90 and other pistol were made by Dark Coder and textured by some people in a team he is part of (I think). He gave us the models to use, with his permission. He was also kind enough to give the models to several other projects, so if you think he stole the models, you'd better take it up with him.

Please prove me wrong and list the weapons that you claim are stolen, along with screenshots comparing the originals and ours so we can clearly see that the mesh/textures are the same/slightly altered.

You leaving us in the dark as to who stole what really isn't helping. You don't find someone guilty of committing a crime without providing evidence. And this team is made up of several people, so you can't just assume we all know what you're talking about.

At the moment, I have no reason to believe you, but I'm all ears.

On another note, my hard drive has something wrong with it, the PC has trouble staying on for even a few minutes (that's if it actually starts up). I certainly can't run any memory intensive programs for any long period (eg. DBPro). That's why I haven't been posting for a while, been too occupied with the PC problem. We're going to reformat and install windows again, so the problem should be solved soon.

It isn't exactly a big mystery, I have the same avatar and the signature was a good give away too.

Funny how people go 'Oh that was Raven' like somehow that means that suddenly the point is invalid.. whatever, not my project I don't give a **** what your artists do.

my posts were purely for mm0zct's benefit anyways, to show a point about shape over polycount.

if he chooses to ignore that because of the source; then whatever, not my loss. it ain't me who's trying to learn this stuff. just trying to help out.

Once again I'd like to add, I don't know who's made what, I'm not even going to mention, which of the weapons I don't believe were created entirely by the artists who are claiming the work.

Don't really care, either way.

I'd have to say you need to amp your artist down though; You don't exactly exude innocence when you fly off the handle.

I never said or meant that, I just didn't realise it was you, and was surprised, as I would be if you were any other well known forum member.

Thanks for the pointers about model shape, there is no reason to ignore them, and I'm sure mm0zct and others will find them useful.

raven/tesio:i didn't meen i was ignoring the comments about the model detail level, i meant i was skipping the stolen model argument, even though i decided to add it to the end of my post afterwards.
since the gun is also for a doom3 mod which can handle high poly models i'm not going to sacrifice too much detail simply because it'll reduce the polycount a little.

For Doom 3 you want to be aiming at Quake 3 polycounts.
You don't create the 'high-polygon' models for in-game but for the Normal Map. It's how it has that 'high-polygon' detail.

Whew, discovered the problem wasn't with the hard drive. It was with the motherboard. The capacitors on it were actually oozing electrolyte. That would explain the sudden shutdowns . Be getting a new motherboard (with 8x AGP to match our current gfx card, and USB 2, yay!) tomorrow. Also be getting a new 160gb hard disk. Shouldn't run out of disk space too fast now .

BTW, if people want to work on their mayo/puzzle comp entries, then don't worry about this project for now, it can wait till after the deadline. That isn't to say I will be stopping work once our new PC parts come .

Half Life 2 didn't have a custom USP, Tesio. It had a USP Match.
And that gun model is ok, but why have a shape outlining the ejector port, not doing anything?

Bah! the thing with modelling guns is that if 10 people model a 356 Magnum, chances are they are almost all going to be virtually the same. Who cares if it already looks like an exsisting model. Unless its some Madeiup fantasy gun, then yeah, it probably WILL look like someone elses model

.. erm yeah
http://www.hk-usa.com

They don't make a USP Match, this would make is a CUSTOM Edition, no?

Quote: "And that gun model is ok, but why have a shape outlining the ejector port, not doing anything?"

Adding an ejector port would've cost in excess of 20 polygons, the object that can be grouped with the Barrel is 4. The gun as a whole was aiming for a very low polygon result, much like the other Hand-gun shown on the previous page.

It works best if you put it underneath and use a transparent texture, but I wasn't really thinking that far ahead. As I said only made it very quickly to show the importance of Shape over Detail.

@Tesio: If you don't really care what happensto this thread then why do you keep posting in it? Anyway, who cares if he posted numerous times about "The Adventures of Widget"? Isn't this section supposed to be a WIP board. Well it's still a WIP and will stay that way until completion (obviously), but it is free advertising for things to come.

Never said I didn't care about this project, I said I don't care about those who've contributed to it.. as it's not my problem to control the input or question the validity of work provided.

Quote: "Anyway, who cares if he posted numerous times about "The Adventures of Widget"?"

I don't care.. Just saying that really it's ****ing hypocritical what he said. Hell, how egocentric do you have to be in order to constantly post up threads about yourself, try to plaster your image wherever you can. I mean jeez.

I offered some advice to someone I thought might make use of it.. so what that makes me some kind of 'big headed ego tripper'. Dude it's like simple math, mm0zt has been modelling for a few weeks and asked for opinions on his weapon. I've been doing it professional for over 5 years and lent my opinion.

He asked for opinions, if you don't like what you get the DON'T ASK. Then you have a right to complain.

perhaps, but if they don't want it locked.. perhaps they should learn to keep comments to themselves and get back to the subject at hand of improving the currently uploaded code or adding more media.

The last few pages really have been complete, blah!
I can understand that Hamish's machine is down so he can't do anything more.. but the whole POINT in an open source project is to add source so it keeps going no matter what happens.

I've added a mesh for ppl to play with, but don't particularly want to touch the source. I looked at it and had the over-whelming urge to make it cleaner and more OO. ^_^
Not sure how many ppl like my coding style though heh

If it would...Then you can use it .

It needs a texture though (and it might be too high poly, I dunno)

Proffesor, I'm currently rethinking my outdoor level. Could you maybe send me yours so I could take a shot at texturing it?

My PC is back up, so I can start work again.

Everyone, stop moaning at each other.

Tesio - I have been trying to keep the code as OO as I can given that DBP doesn't have any actual OO functionality. I realise my coding may have gone to pot more recently as I've been taking the trial and error approach to solving problems . That's why I am currently rewriting the character and weapon systems, getting rid of redundent features. However, if you have any major pointers I'd be glad to hear them.

DBAlex - Yes, that could come in handy. Just email it or post it here so we have a version of the model.
Megaton - Nice one, I'll check it asap .

More tea Vicar?

Hi. I havent been involved in this thread *what so ever*, but I was interested in your goals/aims with this project, and you already have got very far, with some beautiful progress.

Let me get to the point;

Is there anything I can do? I create music and sounds etc, and would love to contribute to this project, but I am unsure of whether my services are any use to you.

Any feedback appreciated. Good luck!

Edit; I'm also kind of good at writing documentation too, which may come in handy... But again, only if you need it.

Hey light

I'm sure Hamish can hook you up with something...

btw I am taking suggestions for new levels, so if anyone got something, cough up.

I'll take a look over the code again (downloaded the lastest earlier) when I have time.

Had an idea for a quick and simple game earlier ^_^
Definately have a look sometime over the next week.

Cheers DB.

Sure, any generic music tracks or sound would be very useful. Probably the latter more so, as we already have quite a few tracks. So anything of half decent quality would be appreciated.

Megaton - I've tried your level, and when you load it into DB it seems half of the textures aren't there (just whiteness). Have you tried loading it into DBP?

As for new levels, I don't know, building site? With scaffolding and stuff. Just something off the top of my head.
