Check out newsletter 22 if you haven't already.

Just saw the FPSC movies and I must say I'm impressed by how easy it is to create an FPS game .

ROFL @ Lee, nothing personal but you're so funny , love your accent .

waht do you guys think of these movies?

I actually have high-quality MPEG versions of the videos too, but they're over 120MB each so we didn't use them :\

I don't know, I doubt it - we'll do something else for the next issue.

My son (the game maker fan) saw the first video was really psyched about FPSC. Heh, he's going to make my Xmas shopping easy this year.

I love the answer to this question:

"What do you want to see users do with FPSC?"

And Lee's reply:

"Make games... lots and lots of games... And create graphics as well... so they can make games with them... and then send them to us... so we can see them..."

Lol, you can tell it's not scripted.

Yes, Lee seems to have a very dry sense of humour:

Q: "What special effects do the weapons in FPSC have?"

Lee: "Firstly the guns are visible..."

I can't believe he did'nt mock the Colonal - everytime you see that dude your supposed to point at him and laugh. There's nothing particularly funny about him except his walk, but it's tradition, and Lee just ignored him .

It does look very cool though, the editor reminded me of snappy version Tony Hawks level editor - which is no bad thing really. It all seems fast, and the lightmapper, well that just looks great.

Yes - classic.

I'd have liked to have seen a screen showing .fx files running on FPSC instead of just being told about them

Heh.. the poor chap was EXTREMELY tired! He had been coding for 2 days solid I think, with no sleep, and then Rick forces a camera infront of him

He's usually far more articulate than that!

If you think about it though - there are LOTS of events that happen in an FPS game when you fire. Bullets fly out, collision has to be detected, enemies may die, shell casings eject, ammo checks have to be done, possible reloads, muzzle blasts, scorch marks, blood splats, etc etc!

Maybe that's a leftover concearn from T3DGM, like the level count as well. One of T3DGM's biggest problems was that you could'nt effectively have lots of varied levels, in FPSC you can. Also, the guns in T3DGM sucked really badly, they looked great, but there was no neat effects and a little red blob for a bullet.

I think Rick was just trying to answer the questions that would be asked by us anyway.

Although I can see the logic and reasoning behind only including 2 media packs I can see it as a limiting factor. We're going to end up with tens of games that look very similar very quickly.

I'm looking forward to making my own media sets though

On a side note -is there any sort of variation built into the media packs or is there only 1 wall tile? I noticed that in the demo videos some of the graphics looked a bit samey after a while - it'd be cool if it randomly selected wall tiles that were all subtely different.

We will release more, Urban Warfare was one such discussed pack. But at the end of the day it takes a LONG time for our 3D guys to build and texture all of the hundreds of models needed to create just a single pack, so we had to limit it somewhere. You can easily make your own though, load up a wall segment, re-do the texture, voila - instant variation. The problem is that lots of people just can't model (and I don't blame them, I consider myself one of those people) - so they have to rely on what we provide.

Q - can we create wall tiles to import into our games?

You can import ANY object into your games. Wall tiles, bananas, monkies, whatever.

No, there isn't an inbuilt model editor, see the other thread in the forum regarding this.

judging from the video and the interview, it looks as if you guys have done a good job at providing the target audience with, what on the surface, looks like a capable development environment for 'clicking together' that dream fps...

... even some of the more experienced coders will not be able to resist the lure of taking a curious look at FPSC.

i like what i see so far, but hey, i'm easy...

the walk through video, while nice, was tooo low a resolution to give anything more than a glimpse at what was there, and while it was a satisfying glimpse, it would've been really nice to see the actual hi res video for a lil detail as to the lighting and effects...

i know that there are storage and bandwidth considerations to consider, but do ya think it would be possible to upload the hires version, or part of it?

if not, i can wait for next month's newsletter

Thanks

Well on note about the higher quality versions of the videos. I imagine bandwidth is major consern for having the lower quality videos released only. I was thinking it could we use peer to peer to host it? I personaly think using bittorrent to host the high quality versions of the video would work pretty good. I can setup a bittorrent tracker for it on my dedicated server. Also I willing to seed it for a few days. I can upload speed 200kb/s. If there a decent amount who after downloading that would continue to seed it would work. Is there any chance of me getting a copy of the high quality video of fps creator so I can try distributing it via bittorrent?

Err... you could just compress the video a bit. A video over 50 megs is way too big.

The video does look nice. However, the enemy movement looked a little jerky and the lighting was a bit dull, but it looks good.

Well I did get a the video. For those wondering why it was not released yet I was working. Also my isp was acting up. (please note a different computer as well as a different isp seeding it so should work fine.

torrent file is at http://www.backuptracker.com/torrents/FPSCreator_WIP_Oct2004.rar.torrent

In case your not familar with bittorrent client I would recremend using abc client which is located at http://pingpong-abc.sourceforge.net/download.php
Then open the torrent file with abc client. Also you could just paste the url to the torrent in the torrent url box.

Also I ask that after you finish downloading that leave you bittorrent to seed it so it would faster for other people to download it.

I did use winrar to compress it the video file and it is 54Mb.

Err... what I meant by compress is by having a smaller bit rate.

Well I know that by looking thru bittorrent client info that most people I when I looking were downloading at or pretty close to 200kb/s . You appear to download at 17kb/s now. I know that where I am seeding has an internet connect has full internet connection. I know the some isp's do throttle port's used by bittorrent. I would recremend trying to change ports bittorrent is using.
