Sorry about the symultanious posts . Not intentional I assure you . I'm downloading the trailer, it's also good to see work being done on this still, as there hasn't really been much happening in this thread either lately.

EDIT

Very nice trailer, music is really cool and theatrical. Keep it up. What do you think you have planned next for this project? I haven't seen much about those vehicles that were apparently there from the start .

Isn't it? Wasn't it? Marvellous!

Thanls both of you.

Yes Van, it's nearing completion. I hope for a final version before 12th April.

Please, do spread the word aout there being updates to this. When you have a 390-reply topic it's hard to get people to take any interest, when they see it's turned blue they just think "oh, there's some more replies".

In fact, it's not just replies, its big developments

'tis why Rich should add a forum title edit feature, so we can date-stamp updates. I kinda gave up updating my WIP thread as it kept dropping off page 1. Been saying this a lot recently, but I'm hankering for some project diary style features that'll make maintaining threads like ours easier.

That's why we have TGC future van-B... but realy that would be nice, instead of a whole project with code and everything to just have a thing where you could just have a diary that mabey the creator of the thread could flag it to anounce another update or something...

[edit] - David-T, talk to hamish, he's got some nice texture fonts he's using in the community FPS, one of those might work for ya. Hope that helps...

[edit 2] - in fact here try these, (hope you don't mind hamish) at least they'd give you some ideas...

Yeah: it's always the stuff that you put the most work into that people don't seem to notice

The rest is great as well, don't get me wrong - the landscapes are simply the first thing that present themselves.

Don't worry, I didn't!

Yeah, they are beautiful. Wendigo's strata works texturs really to finish it off great though - especially on the quarry level (that level seems to have a weird sense of spaciousness - perhaps how it's designed).

I've abandoned trying to get it to work with 5.8, so I'm back on 5.7. I'll have to throw away the speed enhancements

Same here with Lonewolf, I haven't debugged much yet, but I think it's either the terrain plugin, or that new version of DX. Glad I got into the habit of using 2 copies of DBPro, it is a bit strange having to revert to older versions as the result of bug weeks though .

Did you find it was quitting silently?

I did - first as a result of "set object to camera orientation" and then at the line

Yup, same thing - but there's plenty comments in the projects that still work. It wasn't just crashing straight out though, like it'd work until my level loader kicks in then it has a fit.

Hopefully it'll come to light soon.

News, which is neither good nor bad...

I got Lonewolf working under 5.8 - at a glorious 1 fps

I had to strip out some of the level objects, it seems it does'nt like 1 or 2 of them, but there's some serious issues with slowdown that concearn me far more.

EDIT: It's not the changes in DX9c either which I thought might be a factor, 5.6 works fine.

Those picks look mysteriously like they were made in Strata Works
About the whole "landscapes being the least effort" thing. That's why I designed Strata Works. I like making games, too, and found landscapes to be too hard in Paint Shop or Photo Shop, and it just all around took too long. I coulda been writing physics code instead of trying to get that pixel right on the cliff!

Thought I'd poke in again and see how things were going. Sorry I haven't responded in here in forever. I've been so busy, and am actually kinda suprised I am posting now - I got another midterm on monday.. ACK!

Nice job on the movie. I liked it a lot! Back to the effort thing, I feel that Mercs 2 is starting to look more and more polished everytime I see it. So even if I can't exactly put my finger on it I can still see a major difference. Maybe it's the better AI, or the fact that the player moves a bit more realistically. I don't know, but it sure does seem more fluid and DEFINITELY seems a lot more professional. I must agree that his is one of the most professional games I've seen in DBP! I think DavidT and VanB's FPS's are going to be the Star Wraiths of the FPS genre!

[edit]
Oh yeah, I was a bit dissapointed in Exclude Object. It slowed one of my DBP projects down during load so badly, it took over 5 minutes to load the world. I think I understand why it isn't as fast, so I guess I'm just going to have to be a bit more strategic with it. I don't think it's as fast cuz it litterally adds and removes things out of the 3D rendering pipeline. Thus it is continually adding and subtracting at any point in a list. Once it is done doing that, though, it will add framerate performance over Hide Object. Not sure I've ever got it to successfully work, though, but I haven't really tried much.

[edit] - Take two!
If you want a really cool font for your game, I just remembered I found the coolest font ever a while back ago. I lost it, unfortunetely , but I do remember its name - voxBOX. Just like that too. It was wierd. It looked futuristic like something off the movie Alien, but upper characters were the solid-hollow inversion of the lower case characters (which, as it were, were all uppercase). Dang, it's a hard to explain font, but if I run accross it again, I'll post an example of it. I used a bitmapped version of it in the skeleton of an old game a while back and it really added shine!

That could be perhaps because I've converted most of the landscapes to SW (which, might I add is a monumental program, when I got used to the idea of strata maps I couldn't believe how good it was)

Thanks I haven't had time to work on it before recently.

[quote]So even if I can't exactly put my finger on it I can still see a major difference. Maybe it's the better AI, or the fact that the player moves a bit more realistically.[quote]

Weird, perhaps it's just because the video had no sound (I put that in myself, but it is the same music as in game) that it capturered more fluently. Particles were also changed.

[quote]I don't know, but it sure does seem more fluid and DEFINITELY seems a lot more professional. I must agree that his is one of the most professional games I've seen in DBP! I think DavidT and VanB's FPS's are going to be the Star Wraiths of the FPS genre!"

It looks amazing but I think at the moment it's being let down by the sniper effect. It just looks so amateur having a grey Paint-sprite slapped on there.

So just because I'm nice I made this sniper effect:

SetupSniperEffect( Object Num 1, Object Num 2, Image Num, Camera Num, Exposure, Quality )

All the numbers just need to be empty.

Exposure ........ 0 - Normal, 1 - Over Exposed
Quality ......... 0, 1, 2 - Varying quality. I like 0.

Call UpdateSniperEffect() just before you sync.

Here's some screenies:

It's really quick - shouldn't hit your FPS at all.

Don't worry if you don't want to use it.

You need the media attached (<1kb)

My Showcase - It's DBpro-tastic

Trust me I'd love to, no time. Exams coming up

I agree the scope is a bit dodgy, Ideally I'd like to have a nice scope that blurs at the edges but I don't want to get into PS and fiddle around with alpha PNGs for several hours, only to find it doesn't load!

I'll play around with your effect if I get time

David,
I just made one, it would take no time at all to change it to a traditional crosshair for you - I went for a 800x600 alpha'd .png which I texture onto a plain in front of the screen and show the plain when I'm sniping.

Here's a crosshair scope thingy, no worries if you don't wanna use it - but here's the code I'd use to position and lock it.

I will do ANYTHING to work on this project. If you need ideas for guns, I have multiple ideas that would be cool. You want a story.. I can write one. Im not too good with programming... but I am your goto guy for alot of other things.

please send me an email if I can do ANYTHING to help with this game.

I can create websites and graphics too... if you need some of my work to proove how good I am... just ask in the email.

Thanks!
